The staff were fantastic, and the location was great! However, the hotel itself is extremely tired and in need of some serious updates. Unfortunately, our room was not clean—the bathroom was dirty, and when I pulled the bed out to plug in my phone, I found thick dust that ended up all over the sheets. The room also had a damp, musty smell, which wasn’t pleasant. After walking 15 miles on the coastal path, we were too exhausted to raise it with staff at the time, but it was disappointing. With some much-needed refurbishment and better housekeeping, this place could be so much better.
Basically I wanted to get away but I didn't like the vibe so I left. However, the staff were great, the rooms were clean and I was able to leave when I wanted to. There was also live music and the musician was good. There is a good dance floor.
The building is old and has beautiful quirks. Bear in mind that due to the age of the building, you will hear a lot of floorboards creaking and noise from other rooms. My room had a bath and was very spacious. It was a shame no fridges, but the biggest problems for my stay was no WiFi as I was working for 4 days. The issue was 'managed' very badly by the manager and some reception staff. The problem started on day 1 and had a big impact on the enjoyment of my stay. I discussed it with the top manager on leaving and it was managed very well. I am just sad it wasn't resolved properly sooner and very disappointed with the staff. If you need WiFi I would check with the hotel in advance.
The hotel and area was fantastic, however, service at the front desk and the restaurant was lacking.
We took a long weekend break and were excited to try the beach club, however our experience was dampened by the service.
Being made to stand around for 5 minutes, whilst being told we hadn't paid (when we had) was unnecessary and frankly embarrassing.
The restaurant was the most disappointing part of the stay.
I'm the evening service was slow, followed by having our order wrong twice and also dropped.
Breakfast at the restaurant was lacking compared to cheaper hotels that offer continental. Small selection , nothing outstanding. When we ordered a cooked breakfast, it took 30-40 minutes to receive some eggs and pancakes although the restaurant was fairly quiet.
However, the room, facilities, and the spa were fantastic. Beautiful and comfortable rooms. The beach club outside was gorgeous. The spa was perfect and treatments were, to quote my partner, 'one of the best massages of my life'.
We're unsure if we would come back. Although the facilities were great, the service was mostly subpar and not what we'd expect from a harbour hotel.
Excellent location, just a few steps from the lamp. Light, spacious and very clean rooms. Breakfast with buffet, very good and abundant with a great choice. To be recommended.
Location and view are fantastic, facilities are good, there's no denying it's an old hotel and that comes with some quirks and even a few areas that are a bit rough round the edges but it's not advertised as the 5 star hotel it once was. So as a 4 star I'd recommend it to anyone, the staff and cleanliness of room couldn't be faulted!! My only real gripe / area that needs some more immediate attention is please get an EV charger or two!
This was truly one of the most unforgettable birthday experiences I’ve ever had! From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was beyond anything I expected. The staff went out of their way to make the day feel extra special, and I was genuinely moved by their kindness. The room was stunning, the vibe was just right, and every facility added to the comfort of our stay. A big thank you to the lovely lady at reception, her warm welcome and constant support throughout made all the difference. It was a birthday I’ll always remember!

GGuest UserThe hotel is in a very picturesque location, overlooking a lake. The bedrooms are large, with comfortable beds and prices for a stay are very reasonable. Having said that, the completely uncalled for surly, unfriendly and distinctly unhelpful of one member of staff at reception when we returned to the hotel after going to the Newton Abbot races soured the overnight stay for our group of 7. Firstly, after serving drinks to two members of our group, who arrived at the hotel ahead of the rest of us, he didn't allow them to take the drinks outside to a veranda area so they could have a smoke and could provide no good reason for refusing the polite request. Secondly, when the rest of us arrived at the hotel at around 11.30pm the bar was shut and he refused to serve us any drinks, even though we asked politely, merely wanting one more drink before going to bed. He was also curt, rude and distinctly unhelpful when we asked him to point us in the direction of our rooms, giving one word answers and seeming to regard us all as a hindrance to him. All in all, this experience made us regret our choice of hotel and we are disinclined to return to the hotel in future.
A further gripe was that the breakfast service was poor and slow, with cooked breakfasts taking 25 minutes to arrive and many key items missing and not replenished unless guests specifically asked, including cups, tea bags, sugar and orange juice,

GGuest User29/04/2025. We have been to the cliffden hotel three times and had a club room on the first floor they were nice large rooms but this time we were on the second floor our room was very small and claustrophobic nothing like the photos in the booking . We asked for a different room and the man at reception said see me tomorrow morning and if there's a larger room you can have it. Later on in the day my partner went to reception to book a table for an evening meal for us. While she was booking the table the lady at the reception said there were no other rooms you can have. The barman was very polite nice to chat to. We only had one meal in the evening cod and chips could not find much cod it was all batter. Other meal gammon and chips gammon would be good to repair your soles on your shoes. Go to the local chip shop absolutely beautiful. We used the indoor swimming pool which was nice and clean. The gardens are lovely, and the beer is very expensive. Go to the jolly sailor pub with drinks at good prices. Reception is not very helpful. I can't understand why the hotel puts people with dogs on the second floor because when the dog wants to go to the toilet by the time you get down to the entrance the dog has already peed on the carpets. Luckily our dog can hold her pee and she is small enough to carry.I have followed other people with their dogs and seen it. Overall we were very disappointed with our stay this time.
GGuest UserThe hotel itself was nice; can’t fault it. Our room however, had a weird, stale smell and was off-putting, with no way to ventilate the room by opening the windows, as you cannot open them - A/C is not a natural ventilation.
Bed was comfortable, slept perfectly fine, just not nice waking up with the smell, as mentioned before.
Breakfast was good, although I’ve had better.
GGuest UserThis was our second stay at the Leonardo Hotel. On arrival we had to pay £60 pounds for parking for six days. The car park was under the hotel and was convenient but very dirty.
Reception and check-in was very quick and the receptionist very friendly.
Our room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. We had paid for breakfast each morning but on four of the six days there were no pastries. On asking the manager if we could have some I was told there was a problem with delivery but the following day I was told that all the croissants had been eaten first thing in the morning! I feel when you are paying a lot of money for a breakfast you should be able to access all of the things on the menu. There were also no mushrooms the whole stay and one morning there was no jam or Nutella! Very disappointing. The waiting staff in the restaurant were very pleasant. Also on two consecutive days there were no cleaning services.
Ccomputer fmsecNEWSuperb building in a perfect location for us.
We were in a room with a wonderful sea view to wake up to every morning. Breakfast was a very high quality and gave us a great start to the day. Overall the hotel is very clean and every facility will used appears to be maintained to a good standard.
Our room was very spacious compared to many other hotels rooms I have stayed in. The bathroom was definitely larger than average and included a good size shower, with plenty of hot water at a good pressure. Even when the other taps were used, the shower seemed to carry on totally unaffected.
A couple of small details that would have improved our stay. A working lift, during our visit it was out of order. But this didn't spoil our stay. The other detail would be a small stool ( or similar) in the bathroom.
All staff came across as friendly, approachable and helpful, they all seemed keen to ensure that we enjoyed our stay at The Osborne.
We took a walk around some of the grounds which all appeared to be very well maintained. We also walked out of the grounds and across the bay at Meadfoot, its a great location to stroll and enjoy the fresh sea air.
Would we stay here again?
Definitely, we have already discussed our next visit.

GGuest UserChecking in could have been quicker if staff were able to get guests' details from their systems, rather than guests having to hand write them, however having two receptionists helped matters. The facilities really put the likes of Premier Inn to shame which generally charges the same or more with breakfast not included. The food was enjoyable but would benefit from clear allergen information and more plant-based options
