Flight from Thargomindah to St George

Saint George is a small and pleasant rural town on the Balonne River with the vast flatlands of Darling Downs stretching beyond the Great Dividing Range. It is located 495 km west of Brisbane via Toowoomba. It is known as Queensland’s fishing capital! Saint George relaxes you in all the right senses from the minute you arrive. 

Getting There

Saint George is connected via St George Airport (SGO) from Thargomindah Airport (XTO). St George airport is only 2 km away from the town centre.

Regional Express Airlines (REX) is the only airline which operates from Thargomindah to St George. There are no direct flights to St George, only a connecting flight with a layover at Cunnamulla.           

Tip: The transport options from the airport to the town centre are shuttle buses, taxi services, and public buses and rideshares. 

Things to Do

St George's Pilots memorial is located in the park between St George’s terrace and the Balonne River. It honours two local pilots for their bravery during World War II:  Squadron leader John Jackson and Warrant Officer Leonard Waters. The St George police station located at the Western end of Victoria Street which is currently being used as the Heritage Museum houses a blacksmith shop, printing press, local Aboriginal artifacts, an extensive harness collection and a functional steam engine.  Balonne River is filled with the Bauhinia, more commonly known as the Hong Kong Orchid Tree, which makes St George a place of wonder in September and October. 

St George is known for The Unique Egg. It houses an extraordinary collection of hand-carved emu eggs which have been displayed at many expos around the world for years but permanently on display at the store. The eggs have been designed by Steve Margiritis which have been worked on for over 60 years. There are other attractions around the town like the Rock Wells, which is an Aboriginal rock that was formed thousands of years ago.

It is located 37 km away along the Moonie Highway. Weengallon Aboriginal Rock Wells, which lies 67 km south-east of St George beside the Barwon Highway, holds particular importance and is of great cultural significance for the Goomeroi and Bigumbul people. The rock wells provide visitors with insights into the history and spiritual significance. Another great location is Beardmore Dam located 21 km north-east of the town, off the Carnarvon Highway and the lake is excellent for fishing and boating.

Tip: Check out Rowden Park located between the Balonne River and Victoria Street, go on a heritage trail to know more about the history of the town and take a pleasant walk along the Riverbank Walkway which stretches for 2 km from the Jack Taylor Weir to Church Street.
