Pros:
Great location – less than a 5-minute walk to the night market, which was super convenient. The reception area is gorgeous and makes a great first impression. Toiletries were excellent – good quality and not locked away like in some other hotels, and they smelled really nice. The rainforest shower was a standout – absolutely loved it. The rooftop bar is a vibe, with $9 margaritas and tacos, which was a great bonus.
Cons:
The room had a musty smell, and there was no window to let in fresh air, which made it feel quite closed in. The sink trap also had a strong unpleasant smell, and the cushions in the room didn’t smell fresh either. We booked for 4 people, but housekeeping only provided 2 towels daily, so we had to request more every day. The pool is quite small, and the chlorine levels seemed very high – it irritated and burned our eyes, and we ended up having to visit a pharmacy.

Guest UserAlthough the hotel has been open for a while, the rooms are well-maintained and don't look old or dated. It's only about a 5-minute walk to the Reef Fleet Terminal, which is really convenient for taking a cruise to the Great Barrier Reef – you can even sleep in a bit longer in the morning!
Since breakfast wasn't included with the room, we added it for two days when we checked in. It was around $40-something per person. I have to say, the breakfast was pretty mediocre, both in terms of variety and taste. Even the tables and chairs weren't as well-kept as the rooms; the chair I sat on was wobbly.
Overall, the hotel is pretty good. The location is convenient, and the rooms are comfortable. There's a decent Italian restaurant on the way to the terminal too.

XiaoxinI didn't expect to find such a great value hotel in Cairns! There were five of us, and we stayed for four days. The service was excellent, and the breakfast was incredibly rich and varied. The swimming pool downstairs was also fantastic, and they even had a hot tub. If I ever get the chance to visit again, I'd definitely choose this hotel.

TaiyizhenrenStaying at the DoubleTree by Hilton Cairns for 3 nights across two rooms, I genuinely feel it offers exceptional value for money!
Upon arrival at the front desk for check-in, we were immediately greeted with warm chocolate chip cookies. Having just gotten off the plane and feeling a bit hungry, it was such a welcoming touch. The front desk staff was incredibly friendly and thoughtfully arranged for our rooms to be on the same floor, which was incredibly convenient for traveling with elderly parents and children.
The rooms themselves were clean and tidy, with good views and scenery. Breakfast was fresh with a wide variety of choices, and the service staff were all very friendly. Downstairs, there's a restaurant and a ping-pong table, which our kids absolutely loved playing with. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to try the swimming pool.
Its location is another huge plus:
Right across the street is the aquarium, and it's just a 5-minute walk to the beach. Walking to the marina for boat trips takes about 10–15 minutes, making it convenient to get everywhere.
Overall, the experience was fantastic. For family travelers, this is absolutely the perfect choice!

Guest UserWe stayed here for a couple of nights. The staff were very welcoming and always willing to help with anything, which was a real positive — truly 5-star service from the team.
Unfortunately, the housekeeping was disappointing. Some cups in the room had lipstick marks on them, and the shower gel bottles appeared to be mostly filled with water rather than gel, although this was rectified immediately after mentioning this to the reception.
The hotel is about a 20-minute walk into town. There is also a bus stop near the hospital with a bus running roughly every hour. The hotel provides a shuttle service to the center, but it only operates at 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 4:00 PM, and 4:30 PM, so the schedule is somewhat limited.
There aren’t many dining options nearby other than the hotel restaurant, and the food there was not particularly good. Your best option is to head into town, where there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.
The hotel itself feels quite dated and could benefit from renovations. For example, the hairdryer was broken, the sink was cracked, and the shower looked old and worn.
On the positive side, the sheets and towels were clean, and pool/beach towels are provided. The pool/Jacuzzi is clean. Overall, I would recommend staying here and an very happy with my stay.

LAU ERNOld rundown property. We stayed in a suite that was falling apart. Cabinet door to mini fridge was stuck and needed a lot of effort to open/close. Shower taps were faulty and could not shut the water completely. Water was dripping from shower head throughout the day/night. Housekeeper was not attentive to details. Did not replenish items at the vanity counter in the bathroom after being used. Like facial cotton pads and cotton buds. Floor neither swept nor vacuumed throughout our stay. Curtains in the room was torn on one side. Curtains seemed to be too short and had big gaps in between. We chose a non-smoking room. Other guest were allowed to smoke from their balcony? Couldn’t enjoy the cool air outside at our balcony due to constant inhalation of 2nd-hand smoke. What a shame as the room actually had a wonderful view of the marina. Annoying. Breakfast at the restaurant and VIP lounge were repetitive and we had the same items over our 7-day. Plus point is the location of the hotel. Overall, dated hotel that really needs to be upgraded.

Afternoon, as I'm a regular customer, my stay at your accommodation is very customer caring which is why I feel more comfortable there. It has everything I required, especially when I'm on a FIFO that it can be very tiring for me to drive home to Yarrabah especially when you're sitting in a plane for an hour & a half. So be sure & ready for another booking for another overnight cap with the usual another Sunday overnight stay followed by another 2 night (Friday, Saturday) again, great work Team Balaclava Hotel for making my stay very comfortable, yours sincerely Cornelius.

Guest UserI expected much better from a hotel carrying the Ramada name.
We arrived just after midnight, exactly as we had advised the hotel in advance. To our surprise, the entrance gates were locked. There was a phone number on the gate to call for assistance, but despite repeated calls, nobody answered. We could see reception from outside, and could clearly hear the phone ringing, but there was no one there to help.
After standing on the roadside for around 15 minutes with two tired children in the middle of the night, I ended up climbing over the locked fence just to unlock the gate from the inside so my family could enter.
Once inside, we rang the reception bell several times before anyone appeared. Around 20 minutes later, the receptionist (a gentleman with long hair) eventually arrived. Rather than apologising for leaving a family locked outside at midnight, he simply said he had been ”dealing with something”, that there were ”100 guests and just him”, and told us, ”you need patience.” Those are his exact words.
I appreciate that staff can be busy, but this was a complete failure of customer service. An apology would have gone a long way. Instead, we were met with rudeness and a dismissive attitude. It was one of the worst customer service experiences I have encountered.
The hotel itself was also disappointing. The photos on the website appear to be either very old or heavily enhanced. The grounds look nothing like the promotional images—there are no palm trees as shown, and the swimming pool sits right beside the car park, giving it a very different feel from what is advertised.
The one major positive is the location. It's within easy walking distance of the city centre, which was extremely convenient.
Unfortunately, because of the poor customer service on arrival and the misleading impression created by the website photos, I would not choose to stay here again

The facilities are too poor. I live on the first floor and found that the blinds were not closed tightly at night, so all the light leaked in. The lights in the yard were so bright that I couldn't sleep all night.

The only regrettable hotel in Australia and New Zealand.
Let me talk about the advantages firstly: it is close to the beach, only a few minutes walk, you can walk, no beach, and the sea water is cloudy. Walk to the city center for about half an hour and there are buses.
Besides the disadvantages: the hotel is old, the Wi-Fi signal is often not available, the room is crammed, the kitchen operation table is next to the bed, and you have to be very careful when washing. There was also a striking warning-1,000 fines for triggering a smoke alarm. The swimming pool downstairs was completely unused, with leaves and unknown objects floating in it.
The most frustrating thing is that the ants on the wall are all in the tea cup after returning for a while. At night I crawled into my neck!
Will not go again.
