#cityplaybook Climbing Great Gable was one of the most rewarding hikes I’ve done in the Lake District. Towering at 899 meters, it’s not the tallest fell, but it’s certainly one of the most iconic. From the moment I saw its pyramid-like silhouette rising over Wasdale, I knew it would be special. I took the route from Seathwaite via Styhead Tarn, which offered a steady ascent with changing views — from tranquil valleys to rugged scree slopes. The final push to the summit is a bit of a scramble, but completely manageable with decent footwear and a good level of fitness. What makes the top of Great Gable truly memorable is the war memorial at the summit. It’s a quiet, reflective space that honors the members of the Fell & Rock Climbing Club who died in WWI. Standing there with panoramic views stretching from Scafell Pike to Buttermere, it's easy to see why this fell is beloved by so many.
