This hotel, which first opened its doors in 1988, marks the beginning of the now globally acclaimed Aman resorts; a collaboration between designer Edward Tuttle and Aman founder Adrian Zecha, Amanpuri has changed the direction of luxury resort hotels, and its design is still revered as a classic to this day. Amanpuri occupies an entire peninsula on Phuket Island, nestled among dense coconut groves, facing the beautiful Andaman Sea. Edward Tuttle's design takes full advantage of this favorable location, allowing the buildings to embrace nature to the fullest. Despite the hotel now being over 30 years old, it continues to be as eye-catching as ever. With 40 Thai-style Guest Pavilions and 32 Private Villas, they rest quietly in this tropical paradise, true to its Sanskrit name—'place of peace.' Under the shelter of coconut groves, Tuttle realized the hotel's natural potential and the richness of local resources, using only local materials such as granite and hardwood. He drew inspiration from the traditional architecture of Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Thailand, and 'transformed' the space into an ancient temple complex. Each villa varies in layout—with 1 to 9 bedrooms—but all consist of separate pavilions arranged around private swimming pools set at different elevations, most of them facing the sea. Interiors are sparingly decorated with Thai textiles, furniture, art, and antiques to maintain fluidity between indoors and outdoors. Each villa features separate dining, sleeping, and living areas, a fully equipped kitchen, a chef, and a private butler.
