Coming to Buenos Aires, don't miss this city attraction that best captures the local ambiance! — Plaza Dorrego ⛲ (Plaza Dorrego) is located in the San Telmo district (San Telmo), which is also one of the oldest and most traditional districts of Buenos Aires.
As part of the historical center of the city, most of the architectural heritage here is well preserved. Everywhere you look, cobblestone streets, low houses, and courtyards with ponds seem to transport you back in time.
Not only is this place a hub for bars, restaurants, and tango eateries, but it is also renowned for its antique shops with a rich array of goods, creating an atmosphere akin to a refined flea market.
It is also one of the favorite spots for street performers. If you're lucky, you might even see local tango dancers performing with passion. This square has been listed as a historical site of the city because, a few months after its completion in 1816, the people of Buenos Aires declared independence in Tucumán.
In 1970, to add more vitality to the San Telmo area, architect Jose María Pena, who was the director of the Museo de la Ciudad (City Museum) at the time, proposed a small exhibition to persuade 30 neighbors to sell their old belongings at the market.
A year later, the exhibition expanded significantly, attracting more than 200 antique dealers. Years later, Defensa Street and the surrounding area became one of the most renowned centers for antique dealers in the Americas.

Tango Nights in Buenos Aires
Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Buenos Aires with a visit to San Telmo, the city's oldest neighborhood, known for its rich history, colonial architecture, and, most famously, its tango culture. Walking through San Telmo is like stepping into a bygone era, with cobblestone streets and antique shops at every corner.
The heart of San Telmo beats strongest on Sundays during the bustling Feria de San Telmo, an antique market teeming with local crafts, treasures, and street performers. It's a feast for the senses with colorful displays and the rhythm of tango music in the air.
As evening falls, the neighborhood transforms. Tango dancers take to the streets and bars, inviting both locals and visitors to experience Argentina's most famous dance. For the quintessential Buenos Aires experience, visit a traditional "milonga" (tango dance hall). Whether you choose to dance or simply watch, the energy and passion of tango are captivating.
A tip for dining: explore the local "parrillas" for an authentic Argentine barbecue. And don't forget to try the famous Argentine Malbec wine.
San Telmo isn't just a destination; it's a journey into the heart of Argentine culture. With its blend of history, art, and tango, a night in San Telmo is one that you'll remember long after you've left the cobbled streets behind.

A beautiful architectural Mercado in Buenos!
San Telmo Mercado is a must visit when in Buenos Aires especially on a Sunday when there is a day street market along the street outside with lots of people.
San Telmo is located around 20 mins from city centre by car and safe to visit during the day. The vibes are so vibrant and cool with lots of great Argentinian food, drinks and great coffee. There are some vintage and antique shops there too.
The market building is a historic building itself that was built in 1897 and has so many stories written on the wall! A sure picture taking opportunity as well!
