#Shangtianzhu Temple Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
The yellow walls of the Shangtianzhu Temple
In the heart of Hangzhou mountains I found what has become my favourite temple in China. The bright yellow walls and amazing roofs make it a wonder to look at. The temple was a calm among the busy tourists. I got there at 6:30am which was great as it meant there were a lot less people and I could really enjoy the temple in peace. When walking to the top of the temple and then looking down at the amazing roots one can't help but be memorised by it. There were also libraries filled with very Old books which we could see monks readings. If you every in Hangzhou I would highly recommend going to this temple.

Most Impressive Temple around West Lake 🌿
I can’t vouch enough for the beauty of Shangtianzhu Temple, also known as Faxi Temple located in the lush green vegetation surrounding West Lake. It’s not as popular as other temples surrounding the lake BUT it’s the most impressive temple I’ve ever been to in China (Mind you, I’ve been to a lot!)
Accessible by a mountain alley, Faxi Temple 法喜寺 offers a stunning view of the surroundings! 🌿🕊⛰ It was built on the slope of Tianzhu mountain. The atmosphere is so serene! It’s one of those temples where you really feel Zen and connected to nature. The temple is MASSIVE! The architecture is gorgeous and vividly colourful 😍 The walls of halls with deities are covered with beautiful paintings and carvings. The outside is decorated with streamers and lanterns. You’ll see monks walking around as it’s a Buddhist Temple. I was lucky to have a glimpse of a Buddhist prayer ceremony 🤲 The temple also has a vegetarian restaurant. I also spotted a souvenir shop at the exit.
Entrance 🎟 ➡️ 10¥ only and you’re also given incense sticks. The ticket office is at the entrance or you can also buy tickets by scanning a QR code there with Alipay.
Address ➡️ No. 338, Tianzhu Road (天竺路338
号)
How to go ➡️ I took a taxi from Fengqi Road metro 🚇 station. It took about 30-40 mins to reach. Bear in mind that roads around West Lake are highly congested on the weekends) The taxi will most probably drop you off near the parking where you can access the mountain alley leading you to the entrance.

Hangzhou Mountaineering · The Group's Favorite Among the Youth, Visiting Faxi Temple to Burn Incense and Worship Buddha
🔹In Hangzhou's Tianzhu Mountain, there are three famous temples, historically known as the 'Three Tianzhu Temples', all of which are ancient famous temples of Hangzhou. The Lower Tianzhu was established the earliest, with a history of over 1660 years, and even the latest established Upper Tianzhu Temple has a history of a thousand years. The 'Three Tianzhus' originally had their own names, now the Upper, Middle, and Lower Tianzhus are named 'Faxi Temple', 'Fajing Temple', and 'Fajing Temple', respectively, renamed by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, who also personally inscribed the temple plaques. The Upper Tianzhu's Faxi Temple is the largest among the three.
1️⃣ Vegetarian Meal: The most famous thing about Faxi Temple is not the temple architecture, nor the Buddha statues, nor the abbot monks, but — the vegetarian meals, vegetables grown by the monks themselves, 5 yuan per person.
2️⃣ Touching Characters: Right at the entrance, there is a stone wall filled with characters. Popular ones like 'Happiness, Fortune, Prosperity, Peace, Filial Piety...' have been touched so much that they have faded. You can also try to find and touch your own surname to receive some good fortune.
3️⃣ Hanging Blessing Strips: There are many different types of wish blessing strips. Choose the one you want, write your name on it, and you can ask the master to hang it under the lotus, 100 yuan per strip, which can be hung for a year.
4️⃣ Photography: Enter from the Dharma distribution center and go straight up the stairs to reach the most classic and sometimes queue-worthy photo spot. The architecture of Faxi Temple and the distant mountains complement each other, making for great photos. The temple's yellow walls and architectural framing can all be utilized. See picture 5
5️⃣ Cultural and Creative Products: Lastly, don't miss out on the cute cultural and creative products from Faxi Temple. In addition to the stunningly beautiful amulets, there are also super cute incense canvas bags, and endlessly charming Buddhist-themed postcards

Hangzhou Faxi Temple|I thought West Lake was beautiful, until I went to Faxi Temple!
|I thought West Lake was beautiful, until I went to Faxi Temple!. One of the most famous temples in Hangzhou, Faxi Temple (Peace/Marriage) If you're just taking pictures and strolling around, I recommend going to Faxi Temple. It is said that those who come to Faxi Temple now are all seeking marriage. The temple architecture inside is very distinctive, with yellow walls and green tiles. Faxi Temple became popular because of photo check-ins, there are many internet celebrity check-in points, it's really easy to get good photos.
"Don't seek outside" wakes up many people. Don't seek outside, of course, means not to seek heterodoxy, but more, it should be "seek" your own heart, wish to do all good, wish to eliminate all evil, strive to improve your own cultivation, accumulate your own blessings.
- Sincerity is spiritual. - The wish will come true.
- Upper India·Faxi Temple - Amitabha, good, good! - Smooth and unimpeded, all wishes come true. - A pure land, three pillars of incense. - Don't seek outside, but seek from the heart. - Don't seek outside, Faxi is at ease. - May the gods favor, all from joy. - Enter the ancient temple in the early morning, the early sun shines on the high forest.
-Thousands of sceneries are all like illusions, stepping into the monk's door to worship Buddha's incense. -Mountain forest tea sea seeks divine seclusion, the world's ups and downs want Faxi. -Green water and green mountains seek ancient temples, morning bells and evening drums cross the mundane heart.
-Can't rely on myself anymore, can only rely on God's blessing! -Yellow walls and grey tiles, red silk praying for blessings, all are empty mountains and the heart is also quiet.
-I asked Bodhisattva why we met Bodhisattva said it was destined
-I asked Buddha if we have a fate Buddha said we have no fate I said seek fate Buddha said smash money
-I light high incense to respect the gods, to offset the uneasiness in my heart, there is no lack of three pillars of incense in front of the gods, life is more than ten thousand kinds of worries, wish to express the autumn wind parting intention, scatter the uneasiness in my heart.
~Praying for blessings·Attention to seeking marriage
Praying for blessings must come in the morning, the best time to offer incense and worship Buddha is in the morning
√Touch the words on the wall at the entrance side, it is said that you can get what you touch (the word "blessing" on the wall can be seen by the naked eye)
You must go to the Dharma circulation office in the temple to buy a blessing charm, 20r each (it is said that it is consecrated in the temple, but not outside)
The Hall of Heavenly Kings is the most effective for seeking marriage!! When seeking marriage, you can silently recite your own and the other party's situation
You can prepare coins to make a wish at the Ruyi Pool next to the Hall of Heavenly Kings, to give a buff to the marriage
√Hang the wish band for seeking marriage 100r/1 strip, remember to write your own name or your own + the other party's name
Remember to come back to fulfill your vow when your wish comes true~
❌Do not wear shorts or short skirts when visiting the temple
❌Do not bring meaty food into the temple
❌Do not step on the threshold when entering the hall, pay attention to men first left foot women first right foot when crossing the threshold, visit and worship in a clockwise direction
~Photo suggestions
Internet celebrity location: Enter the scenic area and walk to the top along the stairs on the right. You can queue up when there are many people
In addition, the whole temple is yellow walls and green tiles, a casual shot is a big picture, I believe you have the eyes to discover beauty👀
~Attraction details

Fahui Lecture Temple - The twenty-first of the pilgrimage to the hundred ancient temples
The Fahui Lecture Temple was founded in the early years of the Later Jin Dynasty's Tianfu era (936 AD), renamed Tianzhu Teaching Temple during the Southern Song Dynasty, and was bestowed the name Fahui Temple during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, which has been used to this day.
Located in Upper Tianzhu, Fahui Lecture Temple is south of the hidden temple, surrounded by mountains, with Lower Tianzhu, Middle Tianzhu, and Upper Tianzhu - three ancient temples that all worship the Bodhisattva Guanyin. From Lower Tianzhu, passing through Middle Tianzhu, to Upper Tianzhu, where the inspiration of Guanyin is felt. Lower Tianzhu is full of ancient sites, as Su Shi said: 'The Zen masters of Tianzhu have their own style of writing.' The great Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi also praised Tianzhu, saying 'The land is the Buddha's country, the people are not mundane friends.' The three Tianzhu temples are famous temples in the southeast of our country. During the Southern Song Dynasty, Middle Tianzhu Temple was rated as 'the first of the ten Zen temples,' and Upper and Lower Tianzhu Temples were listed as 'the foremost of the five mountains of teaching institutes.'
Upper Tianzhu Fahui Lecture Temple is famous for the efficacious Guanyin and the thriving incense offerings, especially for praying for marriage. Emperors of many dynasties have gone there to offer incense and worship. Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, every spring incense season, pilgrims from eastern Zhejiang and southern Jiangsu have flocked to offer incense, forming the annual 'Tianzhu Incense Market' spectacle.
The scenery of Fahui Lecture Temple is beautiful, and the architecture is splendid, making it one of the two famous temples of West Lake along with Lingyin Temple. A large number of internet celebrities and tourists come here to check in and pray for blessings, with a constant stream of people.
The 500-year-old magnolia at Fahui Lecture Temple:
The magnolia trees at Fayu Lecture Temple are the most beautiful and spectacular flower groups in Hangzhou, with blooming magnolias and incense offerings for Buddha worship reflecting each other, creating a misty atmosphere that feels like traveling through time.
The flowering period of magnolias is usually in early March, lasting only about 10 to 15 days, so planning ahead is necessary, or else one must wait another year.

Hangzhou | A Crazy Day of Merit Accumulation
⛩ The road up the mountain is long and winding. Do modern young people really have such faith in gods and Buddhas? Buses and cars are jammed in traffic, but cycling up the mountain is the best way to go. However, the steep ascents and descents are really tiring. After visiting the temple, I indulged in two bowls of noodles.
🚴♀️ I cycled to the entrance of Faxi Temple, and from there, the rest of the mountain path had to be completed on foot. Upon entering, I was given three sticks of incense, but there was a queue to burn them, so I took them home as a souvenir instead.
📷 Keep walking uphill after entering, and in less than 10 minutes, you'll see the popular photo spot. A bunch of girls are lining up to take pictures. It's nearly impossible to get a shot without someone in it. Before they started charging for tickets again, Buddha must have been very busy.

🏡Many temples have tall magnolia trees, but the one in Faxi Temple is over 500 years old, over 12 meters tall, and has an average crown width of 7.5 meters. It looks like a huge umbrella in the courtyard, with branches and leaves covering the entire yard.🌳
👀On this warm spring morning, even though there is still fog, it won't stop the tree's spring beauty. It's a really big tree, and seeing it in person is far more impressive than in photos. You can see the flowers blooming from top to bottom, and if you listen closely, you can smell the fragrance wafting in the spring breeze, complemented by the surrounding ancient architecture, full of national style spring colors. When the monks pass under the tree, the cultural atmosphere in front of you is greatly enhanced.🌼🌿
Here are some photography tips for everyone:
1. Faxi Temple opens before 6 am, and at 6:10 am you can see monks lining up, so if you want to capture such a scene, come early.
2. The best time to take photos is after 3 pm when the sunlight is not so strong, and the magnolia flowers look more translucent.
3. Try to take pictures from a low angle to get a cleaner shot.
4. You can take photos from all around the shooting point, focusing on plaques, reflections on windows, Buddhist characters, and the yellow walls. Find your own angle according to your preference.
5. You can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Faxi Temple, which is delicious and affordable.
6. When taking photos with a mobile phone, try to use 2x, 3x, 5x zoom for a cleaner image.
7. I like to set my phone to a cool color temperature to capture the icy and pure atmosphere.📸🌆
✨Photo date: 2024.3.12
📍Photo location: Faxi Temple
📷Photo equipment: 13pro
🎟️Ticket price: 10 yuan (free with temple card)
🌈About the timing: The flowers usually bloom around March 10th every year, this year it's relatively late, and the blooming period can last about a week, so if you plan to enjoy the flowers, hurry up!
⏰About the moment: It's suggested to go early in the morning when there are fewer people, be there around 6:30 am, and the first ray of sunlight is at 7:20 am, which is the most beautiful moment, you must wait!
🚻Suggested best route and photo spots: The tree is located in the large courtyard, aim for the Wuguang Hall, there's basically no specific route, but if talking about photo spots, maybe shooting from south to north is best, or find a spot on the steps or through the doorways nearby for a good foreground.🌳🌌
⛰What scenery is worth seeing? Apart from this tree, Faxi Temple itself has many scenic spots worth seeing, full of life!
🏠What facilities are worth noting? It's a well-developed scenic area with complete facilities!
📷How to take beautiful portraits: Personally, I find it difficult to take portraits because there are too many people and limited spots, a 70-200mm lens would be better for shooting.
🚗How to get there? Just navigate directly, it's recommended to go on weekdays, and not to drive yourself.🗺️
I hope the above information is helpful to you, and I wish you can enjoy the beautiful magnolia flowers at Faxi Temple!🌸✨

Key point⚠️: Want to take portraits under the magnolia flowers?
nonono!! No! Way!
Discouraging one by one, because there are super many people!!
However, you can find a yellow wall inside the temple, where the light and shadow hit the wall
Taking portraits there is super photogenic and looks incredibly good!
Lots of people can cause traffic jams, and the parking lot is also quite full
It is recommended to travel by bus, or park nearby and then take a taxi.
Admission ticket🎫10 yuan, temple ticket is free.
The number of flowers at Faxi Temple is not as abundant as in previous years, but it is still stunning in the Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai region
Why are there fewer and fewer magnolia flowers at Faxi Temple?
The precious plants cannot withstand the changes in the climate and environment
Picture 2 was taken last year; this year, there is a noticeable decrease
But, as expected, I was once again amazed by its beauty!
