The biggest mistake is treating El Nido and Coron as two nearby stops that are easy to squeeze into one holiday. Adding the second destination means another hotel, luggage transfer, port or airport process, schedule dependency and weather risk. A practical starting point: 2–4 usable days → choose ONE. 5 usable days → still usually choose ONE. 6 usable days → BOTH starts to make sense. 7–8 usable days → the comfortable BOTH range. 9+ usable days → more room for slower travel, diving, weather buffer or another Palawan branch. Choose EL NIDO when classic limestone lagoons, boat-reached beaches and Bacuit Bay island-hopping are the priority. For a shorter or simpler first trip, this is the broad starting choice. Choose CORON when its clear lakes, dramatic limestone water, wreck diving or snorkelling and distinctive underwater scenery are what actually draw you to Palawan. Coron is not simply a quieter version of El Nido—and it is not only for divers. Choose BOTH when you genuinely want both experience systems and have enough time for each destination to feel worthwhile after accounting for the transfer. The key is to count the entire hotel-to-hotel journey, not just the advertised ferry or flight time. Sea conditions can also disrupt transfers and boat days, so a tighter combination needs less margin for error. If your flights allow it, arriving on one side and departing from the other can reduce backtracking. But always verify the actual ferry or flight operating on your travel date before locking hotels. Having visited many islands, Coron definitely ranks in the top tier for me so far. It boasts stunning karst landscapes, lagoon scenery, and one of the world's best shipwreck clusters. Whether island hopping to enjoy beaches and lagoons or going out to sea for snorkeling among shipwrecks and coral reefs, the experience is always top-notch. · Route A: Classic Lagoon Route: Kayangan Lake -> Barracuda Lake -> Twin Lagoons -> Smith Beach -> Shipwreck Frame and Coral Garden Route C: Shipwreck Snorkeling Route: Regie Cruz Shipwreck -> Luzon Shipwreck -> Pass Island -> Coral Garden · 🐟🦐🐙 Before heading out to sea each day, remember to ask the boat guide to take you to the market to buy fresh ingredients. Lunch can be freshly prepared on the boat every day. Have fun but also eat well 😋. · Route A 1️⃣ Kayangan Lake, usually the first stop. Start by going to the mountain viewpoint. Although I think the view is average, you still have to queue to take photos at the viewpoint. Then you can swim in the lake, which is home to a type of needlefish (see photo 4 above). Photo 3 shows the lagoon outside Kayangan Lake. · 2️⃣ Barracuda Lake (photo 5) is also a brackish water lake suitable for swimming. It is inhabited by a type of black catfish. The guide will break shells to attract them to feed. Photo 6 shows a nearby private small beach. · 3️⃣ Twin Lagoons (photos 1 and 3) are the highlight of this route. The two lagoons are connected by a narrow channel where you must lie down in the kayak to pass through. There is a reef rock at the connection point where you can stand and get a perfect photo ✅. · 4️⃣ Smith Beach (photo 7) is the lunch stop on this route. The small beach is also very beautiful, and aerial shots can capture the nearby heart-shaped lagoon (photo 8). · 5️⃣ Shipwreck Frame and Coral Garden are two snorkeling spots on this route. The shipwreck frame mostly shows only the bow, but the fish schools here are truly dense (photo 9 below). · Route C 1️⃣ Luzon Shipwreck (photos 9 above and 10) is the shallowest shipwreck in Coron. At low tide, the hull even emerges above the water surface, making snorkeling easy. The ship is home to a large school of small fish, densely packed. · 2️⃣ Regie Cruz Shipwreck (photos 11 and 12) is another relatively shallow shipwreck, with the bow about three to four meters deep, also suitable for snorkeling. · 3️⃣ Pass Island (photo 13) is the lunch stop on this route. You can take a light hike (a small hill that takes about ten minutes to walk). Usually, you stay on the island for two hours to fully enjoy the white sandy beach. · 4️⃣ Coral Garden (photo 4 below) has excellent coral, and we saw a large school of yellowfin trevally. · Island hopping usually returns to the pier around 4 or 5 pm. Be sure to go up Mount Tapyas to watch the sunset. At dusk, the entire sea is dyed pink, creating a very dreamy scene. My first trip of the new year took me to island hopping in Palawan🏝️. Here, the large and small limestone islands have formed magnificent karst landscapes through erosion, like a water-based version of Guilin on the sea. If Guilin's scenery is the best in the world, I think El Nido's scenery can be the best in the Philippines! · El Nido island hopping has four routes: A, B, C, and D. Due to time constraints, I only took Route A this time, which focuses on lagoons and beaches~ · 🗺️ Island hopping route: Big Lagoon (kayaking) -> Secret Lagoon -> Shimizu Island -> Payong-Payong Beach -> Entalula Beach -> Las Cabañas Beach · 1️⃣ Big Lagoon (Photo 5) This is the first and main activity of the day. For 300 PHP, you can rent a kayak to paddle through the shallow waters and enjoy the lagoon, even passing through channels between rocks. · 2️⃣ Secret Lagoon (Photos 6, 7) A small lagoon next to the beach that requires crawling through a hole to enter. The water is just over a meter deep. Personally, I found the scenery average, just a quick check-in spot. · 3️⃣ Shimizu Island (Photos 3, 4) The front of Shimizu Island features a series of small beaches divided by sea-eroded rocks, while the back offers snorkeling to see coral. Usually, people have packed lunch on the island here. · 4️⃣ Payong-Payong Beach (Photos 1, 8) This beach is also divided into small sections by sea-eroded rocks. Between two rock formations at the southernmost part, I captured the cover photo that looks like walking into a hidden fairyland from the sea. · 5️⃣ Entalula Beach (Photo 2) The last stop on Route A is usually Seven Commandos Beach, but the captain suggested switching to this beach from Route B that day. I personally think this beach is more beautiful. At the northernmost part, a sea-eroded rock stands like a diamond on a small beach, like a hidden secret realm. · 6️⃣ Las Cabañas Beach (Photo 9) Since I stayed near this beach, on the way back the captain dropped us off here directly. The beach’s tip faces west, so many people come here to watch the sunset. From a drone perspective, you can see the beach filled with people! · Besides El Nido, I also went on two island hopping routes in Coron this time. El Nido’s karst landscape is more beautiful but also more expensive. In Coron, besides visiting lagoons and beaches, you can snorkel to see shipwrecks. Lunch is freshly prepared on the boat with ingredients bought from the market that morning. Comparing the two, I still prefer Coron Island a bit more. When you come to Coron Island as a regular tourist, you don't necessarily have to dive deep to explore the beautiful underwater world. THE PHILIPPINES 3 weeks guide Book your accommodation in part of Manila called Makati, where all the restaurants, street food, and shops are. On the morning of day 2 catch a flight to Coron. After arriving in Coron town, get yourself a bike for around 600 pesos per day. One day will be enough as Coron Island on its own is not really exciting so you won't really need much time for exploring. The best thing about Coron is the surrounding islands around and therefore the Island hopping tours. On day 4 in the morning, you will board the ferry to Palawan, El Nido. It costs around 1760 pesos per person and takes around 5 hours. But it´s worth it because now you are at one of the most spectacular places of this Philipines El Nido is a town on the very north of Palawan Island and is home to many pristine white sandy beaches and chilled vibes. From El Nido on day 7 in the morning join a van going to Puerto Princesa. In Puerto Princesa, you can visit Iwahig Open Prison and treat yourself in some nice accommodation as we did. Cebu Island is where the best waterfalls are. Words can´t describe how much fun it is to hike all the waterfalls levels! On the morning of day 8, you will arrive by plane from Puerto Princesa to Cebu Island. From the airport make your way directly down to Moalboal. That is where all the accommodation and restaurants for tourists are and you will be closer to all the waterfalls and sunrise hikes. Just a 2 hours long ferry ride from Cebu will bring you to Bohol Island. An Island with such unique landscapes has a lot to offer!
