Jingyanggang Tourist Area (Yanggu, Shandong, 4A-rated) — traveler post in Yanggu

Jingyanggang Tourist Area (Yanggu, Shandong, 4A-rated)

📍Address: Zhangqiu Town, Yanggu County, Liaocheng City, about 18 km east of the county seat, a key node on the Water Margin tourism route. The scenic area covers 33.3 hectares and is also a Longshan Culture ancient city site (provincial-level cultural heritage site). It is not just a popular spot for Water Margin stories, but also hides relics of ancestors from the Neolithic Age over 4,000 years ago. Core attractions to visit in order 1. Sanwan Buguo Gang Hotel The first stop at the entrance, designed in the style of a Northern Song Dynasty tavern, with wine flags hanging high and ceramic wine jars on display. It recreates scenes from the book, where you can experience Water Margin-themed dining and imagine the scene of Wu Song drinking 18 bowls of "Toupingxiang" wine. Nearby, there are replicas of official notices and villager warning placards, restoring the story background of "a tiger on the ridge." 2. Mountain God Temple Located at the waist of the ridge, this is a historic building over 200 years old with blue bricks and gray tiles. Inside the temple is a statue of Wu Song fighting the tiger. The woods in front of the temple are where Wu Song rested in the novel and saw the official tiger-hunting notice. 3. Site of Wu Song Fighting the Tiger & Southern Song Dynasty Stele The scenic area's treasure: the "Site of Wu Song Fighting the Tiger" stele from the early Southern Song Dynasty. Unearthed in 1958, the large characters on the front are clear, while the text on the back is weathered and blurred. It is the most important cultural relic in the scenic area. Nearby stands a relief sculpture of Wu Song fighting the tiger created by Liu Jiyou, as well as a large stele with "Jingyanggang" inscribed by Shu Tong and a 3-meter-tall giant "Tiger" stele. 4. Wu Song Temple Located at the highest point of the sandy ridge, it was first built in the mid-Ming Dynasty and later renovated. In the center of the main hall is a statue of Wu Song (the Pilgrim). The murals completely depict the story of Wu Song's life: fighting the tiger, killing Ximen Qing, drunkenly beating Jiang Menshen, and the bloody scene at Mandarin Duck Tower, etc. Zhao Puchu inscribed the plaque for the temple gate. The temple is surrounded by dense ancient locust trees and cypress forests, preserving the atmosphere of a desolate ridge. 5. Huxiao Pavilion, Stele Forest, Tiger Pool, and Jingyang Lake The hexagonal Huxiao Pavilion, with its name inscribed by Liao Jingwen; the Stele Forest, which collects poems and calligraphy by scholars throughout history; the Tiger Pool, where you can see Siberian tigers; and Jingyang Lake, with a water surface of about 10 hectares, featuring an island in the center where you can take a simple walk around the lake. There are also other small supporting attractions such as Monkey Mountain, Deer Park, and an archery range. Historical background In ancient times, Jingyanggang was a series of undulating sand dunes, overgrown with trees and weeds, sparsely populated, and historically, fierce tigers did indeed roam the area. The "Ten Chapters of Wu Song" in "Water Margin" took place in Yanggu, and the tiger-fighting at Jingyanggang is a famous opening chapter. Archaeology confirms that this is a Longshan Culture city site, with an ancient city existing 4,000 years ago, possessing cultural depth beyond just the Water Margin legends. Visitor information · Admission ticket: 30 yuan/person; discounts for seniors and others are subject to the scenic area's policy · Opening hours: May 1–Sept 30, 8:30 AM–5:30 PM; Oct 1–April 30 of the following year, 8:30 AM–5:00 PM · Duration: 1.5–2 hours; the ridge is not high, with almost no steep slopes, making it easy to hike · Featured performances: Water Margin martial arts and live-action Wu Song fighting the tiger performances are scheduled on holidays; fewer performances on weekdays · Visitor tips: It is a plain sandy ridge, not a high mountain. The highlights are mainly cultural relics and scenes from the classic novel. It can be combined with Yanggu Shizhilou for a one-day tour.

Jingyanggang Ruins, Yanggu County, Shandong (Neolithic Age, National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit - Batch 5) — traveler post in Yanggu

Jingyanggang Ruins, Yanggu County, Shandong (Neolithic Age, National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit - Batch 5)

The Yanggu Jingyanggang Tourist Area is located in Zhangqiu Town, 18 km east of the county seat of Yanggu, Liaocheng City, Shandong Province. It is a National AAAA-level tourist attraction (promoted in 2023) and a core attraction on the Water Margin tourism route, covering an area of approximately 6,450 square meters. The scenic area is famous as the setting for the story of Wu Song fighting the tiger in "Water Margin" and for its Longshan culture ruins. Existing attractions include the Mountain God Temple, the site of Wu Song's tiger fight, Wu Song Temple, the Stele Forest, and the Lake Heart Island. The Wu Song Temple was originally built in the Ming Dynasty, rebuilt in 1958, and Longshan culture remains were discovered archaeologically in 1973. According to the "Yanggu County Annals," this area once featured rolling hills, dense grass and forests, was sparsely populated, and wild beasts roamed. Today, Jingyanggang has become a sandy ridge, with smoke rising from nearby homes. In the center of the top of the sandy ridge stands a temple in a traditional style, commonly known as "Wu Song Temple." It is said to have been built in the mid-Ming Dynasty and later destroyed. The existing ancient temple was built in 1958. In front of the temple is a stone tablet engraved with the three large characters "Jingyanggang," inscribed by the famous contemporary Chinese calligrapher Shu Tong. Since 1973, after multiple trial excavations by the Shandong Provincial Archaeological Team, Jingyanggang has been identified as a "Longshan Culture" site. The site is now divided into two ridges, north and south, with a road in between. The south ridge is 86 meters long (east-west) and 75 meters wide (north-south), with an area of approximately 6,450 square meters. The north ridge is 24 meters long (east-west) and 47 meters wide (north-south), with an area of approximately 1,128 square meters. The top of the ridge is relatively flat and about 4 meters higher than the surrounding ground. The site has rich cultural connotations. Observing from the cliff, the cultural layer of the north ridge is about 2.5 meters thick, and the south ridge is about 2 meters, with exposed ash pits. Judging from the collected specimens, mud pottery is the main type, followed by sand-tempered pottery; the pottery color is mainly gray, followed by black and red. Patterns include cord patterns, basket patterns, square patterns, bowstring patterns, leaf vein patterns, etc. Identifiable vessel shapes include tripods, urns, lids, etc. Stone arrowheads, stone chisels, and bone chisels were also collected. In the autumn of 1995 and the spring of 1996, the Shandong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the Liaocheng Regional Cultural Relics Research Office conducted two trial excavations of the site. Multiple drillings and trial excavations have basically clarified the scope, area, width, and structure of the city site. Among the Longshan city sites discovered so far in the Yellow River Basin, the Jingyanggang site is the largest in scale. The Mountain God Temple was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty and has a history of over 400 years. The Tiger Fighting Site is where Wu Song rid the people of a menace. The large bluestone slab where Wu Song lay after drinking is still there. Back then, after drinking 18 bowls of "Toupingxiang" wine at the "Three Bowls Do Not Cross the Ridge" tavern, Wu Song ignored the innkeeper's advice and the official government notice, and went up Jingyanggang. At this time, the sun had set, twilight was falling, and the strong alcohol began to take effect. He then found a bare, large bluestone among the rocks, leaned his staff aside, and lay on it to rest. Just as he was about to sleep, he suddenly heard a chilling wind, encountered a fierce tiger, and killed it with his bare hands, becoming a well-known story. The hero's story happened hundreds of years ago. Today, the broken branches and withered trees around the bluestone slab seem to still retain traces of Wu Song's fight with the tiger. This large bluestone, weathered by wind and rain, seems to still bear the imprint of the tall and burly hero Wu Song. According to research, this stele was erected in the early Southern Song Dynasty and is a historical witness to Wu Song's tiger fight. Wu Song Temple is the highest point on Jingyanggang, consisting of a mountain gate, a stele pavilion, and a 3-bay ridge-roofed main hall. Jingyang Lake covers an area of 200 mu. The water source is groundwater and Yellow River water, known for its excellent water quality and delicious fish and shrimp.

Yanggu War Memorial: A Glimpse into the Punchbowl Basin 70 Years Ago — traveler post in Yanggu

Yanggu War Memorial: A Glimpse into the Punchbowl Basin 70 Years Ago

Yanggu War Memorial is located within the Punchbowl Security Tourist Area. I visited here with friends in July 2026. The museum covers the fierce battles fought in the Yanggu region during the Korean War, including the Battles of Mt. Dosol, Punchbowl, and Bloody Ridge. It reveals the harrowing history of the now-peaceful basin from seven decades ago. Visiting here before heading to the Eulji Observatory will give you a completely different perspective on the landscape. 📍 Punchbowl Security Tourist Area, Haean-myeon, Yanggu-gun, Gangwon-do 🎫 Free Admission / Closed on Mondays (Check before visiting) 💡 Tips ① It's located in the same complex as the Unification Hall, making the itinerary short and easy. ② I recommend visiting the memorial before heading up to the Eulji Observatory. There is so much history hidden behind these beautiful mountain names.

Poli Catholic Church, Yanggu, Shandong — traveler post in Yanggu

Poli Catholic Church, Yanggu, Shandong

The Poli Catholic Church was built under the direction of German missionary An Zhitae and Austrian missionary Fu Ruose starting in 1882. The main structure was completed in 1889, and all auxiliary facilities were finished in 1909. It covers a total area of 14,000 square meters, with over 200 rooms remaining today, and at its peak, it had 300 rooms. The church complex is a European Gothic brick-and-wood structure, facing south, and consists of 8 interconnected Western-style buildings. It includes functional buildings such as the cathedral, friary, convent, orphanage, and monastery, surrounded by a two-story circular building with interconnected basements. The complex contains 19 self-contained courtyards. The chapel features a tin-plated roof with exquisite craftsmanship, serving as a classic example of the fusion of Chinese and Western architecture. The Poli Catholic Church was the site of the 1928 Poli Uprising, the earliest peasant revolutionary uprising in Shandong Province led by the Communist Party of China. After capturing the church, the insurgent army established the Donglin Circuit Revolutionary Committee, opened granaries to distribute food, and expanded its ranks to over 500 people, sowing the seeds of revolution in the western Shandong region. Clear bullet holes from the battle remain visible to this day on the two black-painted tin-covered wooden doors of the church. The insurgent forces engaged in fierce combat and a standoff with reactionary military police and local militia for over 20 days. Ultimately outnumbered, they were forced to withdraw from the church on February 7 and were later disbanded after being jointly suppressed by warlords from Shandong and Zhili. Although the Poli Uprising failed, it dealt a heavy blow to the arrogance of the reactionary ruling class and imperialism, sowed the seeds of revolution in western Shandong and the province at large, and laid the foundation for the development and victory of future revolutionary struggles. It is a Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit of Shandong Province.

It is the only remaining ancient salt industry management site along the Liaocheng Canal and was designated as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit by the State Council in May 2006. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Salt Transport Commissioners were often appointed in coastal areas and major salt-producing provinces. Their full title was "Salt Transport Commissioner of the Salt Transport Commission," often abbreviated as "Yunsi" (or "Yunshi" or "Duzhuan"). According to historical records, Acheng once had 13 salt gardens, an organization to manage salt transport, and salt patrols. The town also had dedicated stone roads for salt transport; if you dig more than two feet down on the old street of Acheng today, you will find stone, which is the old salt road. Sea salt was transported from the East China Sea and loaded onto boats in Acheng for shipment to the south, which is why Acheng earned the nickname "Silver Acheng." The Acheng Salt Transport Office was first built during the Ming Dynasty. During the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, it was expanded and renovated by Shanxi salt merchants in Acheng in collaboration with the Salt Transport Office. Locally, it is commonly known as the Shanxi Guild Hall or the South Guild Hall, serving as both a guild hall and an office for the Salt Transport Branch. Located to the west of Haihuisi Temple, the office consists of two courtyards and stands as a unique complex covering an area of 2,623 square meters. The existing structures include the mountain gate, front hall, back hall, and side halls. The main hall houses a statue of Guan Gong, while the east and west side halls house statues of Guan Ping and Zhou Chang. The architectural techniques of the Salt Transport Office are exquisite, with vivid carvings on the column bases of the main hall, delicate woodwork, and fluid, lively paintings, all reflecting the talent and wisdom of the skilled craftsmen of that time. As an important cultural relic building along the ancient canal, the Acheng Salt Transport Office holds significant historical and artistic value and serves as a testament to the economic prosperity of the Liaocheng Canal during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit.

Jingyang Hill

I used to think that Wu Song fighting the tiger was a fictional story in Water Margin, but when I came to Jingyanggang Scenic Area, I wondered if it was true. It takes about an hour to walk around the scenic area, which is suitable for friends who love Water Margin heroes.

Shizilou (Lion House) Tourism Area

The scenic area is newly built. Behind the Lion Tower is an antique street block that was restored according to the description in Water Margin. There is Wu Dalang's pancake shop, Wang Po's teahouse, Ximen Qing's herbal medicine shop, and actors playing Wu Dalang and Pan Jinlian. There is nothing to eat or play in it, so I finished the tour in a short time.

Chiyou Mausoleum Tourist Area

I didn't know much about this legendary figure before, but after visiting, I learned a lot more about him. He is worthy of being the first ancestor of the Chinese nation. The weather was too hot, and there were few visitors. The staff insisted on epidemic prevention and control and asked us to wear masks when entering. I saw some fruit trees that are not found in the south, which is also a great gain. There are several peach trees at the entrance of the scenic spot.

Mount Taishan

How about Mount Tai? The verdant peaks of Qi and Lu stretch endlessly! As the foremost of the Five Sacred Mountains, Mount Tai's ticket price is quite reasonable. You can enter the mountain twice in three days. Hikers can ascend once via the Red Gate and once via the Eastern Imperial Road. At this time of year, a bed at the summit costs just over 100 yuan, which is acceptable. If you're lucky, you might see the sunrise!

Wansuishan Martial Arts City

My second visit to Kaifeng fulfilled my dream of visiting Wansui Mountain Martial Arts City! The scenery perfectly recreated the martial arts world I envisioned, with meticulous attention to detail and everyone dressed in ancient costumes, creating a truly immersive experience. I collected silver tickets through interactive activities and redeemed them for a phone stand. The scenic area has expanded eastward this year and is constantly being updated. I look forward to my next visit to unlock even more new attractions, ensuring a constantly fresh experience.

Song Du Huangcheng Cultural Tourism Resort

It's very worthwhile, but it's also very crowded, which might slightly detract from the overall experience. However, the people are incredibly welcoming, and there are many beautiful spots for taking photos. The food is also affordable and inexpensive, which kids enjoy. I'll definitely go back when it's less crowded.

Baotu Spring

I had a little extra time in Jinan during my work trip, so I choose to visit Boutu Spring. At first I was curious why I need to pay such amount just to see the ‘springs’, but once I was inside, I understood why the locals were there, like so many of them… love the place and at least I get to experience some autumn vibe!

Daming Lake Scenic Area

The hotel is very close to Baotu Spring Scenic Area, just 200 meters from the south gate, which is very convenient. Guests can also enjoy Baotu Spring water while staying at the hotel. It's also not too far to get to Daming Lake Scenic Area. The hotel service is excellent, very 👍.

Ancient Town of Qingzhou

It was great. I explored the Ouyuan Garden and the main street thoroughly, but didn't have time to visit the other alleys and attractions. The church wasn't open, but there were a few cultural and creative shops, and I bought quite a few things. Dong Ge's noodles were delicious; I ordered the pork intestine noodles, which were tasty and only 18 yuan, not expensive.
