Auckland Polytechnic University is one of eight public universities in New Zealand. After being officially upgraded in 2000, the first president of Auckland Polytechnic University was the former Governor-General of New Zealand (1985-1990), Archbishop of the Anglican Church of New Zealand and Bishop of Auckland (1980-1985), Sir Paul Alfred Reeves (Sir Paul Alfred Reeves).
