In Labrab, about 20 kilometers from Labrab, Magellan crossed the Channel to Maidan in an effort to spread his religious beliefs. He underestimated the fighting spirit of Labrab, the island's chief, and his troops. Magellan died in the battle for hegemony and freedom before landing on April 27, 1521. Although he traded jewelry and spices to get his body, efforts to retrieve it ended in vain. In 1866, a monument was erected to commemorate the martyr's martyrdom.
