Nan'ao Island Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
The treasure island that has driven friends crazy with questions! It's not overseas, but Nan'ao Island in Guangdong!
The azure sea, lighthouses, dolphins, forests, and the island's ring road here perfectly assemble all the elements I love. It's simply the dream island of my heart!
I mean, you've got to take some time to stay on this enchantingly beautiful island for a few days, I guarantee it will lift your spirits.
📍Location: Nan'ao Island, Shantou, Guangdong
✈️Transportation: You can fly directly to Jieyang Airport, and then easily reach the island by self-driving or taking a taxi. Self-driving around the island for photos is even more comfortable!
🏨Accommodation: There are many accommodations on the island, and if you avoid holidays, the value for money is super high.
📷Sharing a few super photogenic spots on Nan'ao Island
1⃣️The first picture, the road leading to the azure sea, navigate to the entrance of Tianyu Mountain Villa, it's even more beautiful in the morning!
2⃣️A road leading to the sea discovered while self-driving around the island, navigate to Cape Beach Camp where there's also a swing facing the sea.
3⃣️The Tropic of Cancer, Nan'ao Bay Forest Park, you can drive in early in the morning, but electric vehicles are not allowed.
4⃣️Another road leading to the seaside, also a place to watch the sunrise, you can navigate to the Ibis Hotel, this road is on the way to the hotel.
5⃣️The wild hill behind the Ibis Hotel, completely uninhabited, overlooking the coastline, also an excellent spot to watch the sunrise. It requires climbing and hiking, suitable for those with outdoor experience.
6⃣️Nan'ao Bridge, the sea bridge you must cross when entering or leaving the island, next to the Changshanwei Lighthouse, you can check in both places.
7⃣️Sanchuan Cliff Lighthouse, the red and white lighthouse on the seaside cliff, looks great when shot with a telephoto lens.
8⃣️Qian'ao Bay Lighthouse, rocks, sea, beach, the only lighthouse where you can walk down to the beach for a photo.
9⃣️The lonely tree, navigate to Yuman Cang. Go fishing, and you'll find this tree. It's said that a viewing platform has been built now.
If you have the chance, you must self-drive around the island. The scenery along the way is really amazing. When I went there in the summer, I was even lucky enough to see a group of dolphins🐬!
Travel Sharing, Nan'ao Island·3 Days 2 Nights·Non-self-driving Tour Guide
It is recommended to play on sunny days, with a temperature of about 10 degrees Celsius. It is suggested to wear a fleece base shirt with a sweatshirt or sweater, and carry a jacket to deal with the strong wind by the sea.
**Transportation:**
- High-speed rail: from Shenzhen to Shantou.
- Bus: Take the 161K route (12 yuan) from Shantou Railway Station to the Tourist Center, then transfer to the 601 route (7 yuan) to the Tropic of Cancer Square, and walk to Qing'ao Bay. Shared electric cars can be used on the island, with a deposit of 199 yuan, riding about 50 kilometers, enjoying the beautiful scenery.
**Accommodation Suggestions:**
- Near Qing'ao Bay: Suitable for watching the sunrise.
- Near Houzhai Town: Recommended for watching the sunset and tasting food.
**Recommended Scenic Spots:**
1. Qian'ao Bay Lighthouse
2. Sanchuangya Lighthouse
3. Changshanwei Lighthouse
4. Tropic of Cancer Square
Unable to visit Qiaozai Peng and the backyard, but you can see the windmill of Qiaozai Peng at the foot of the mountain.
**Gourmet Selection:**
*Qing'ao Bay:*
1. Sister Xu's dishes: mainly seafood, high cost performance, recommend seaweed fried rice and oyster pancake.
2. Tofu Flower: The stall at the entrance of the Tropic of Cancer Square has delicious tofu flower and sea stone flower, which is more delicious when hot.
*Houzhai Town:*
1. Jie Xin Milk Dessert Family: Highly recommended double skin milk, rich milk flavor, affordable price, and fried tofu.
2. Ran Ji Sugar Water: Near Jie Xin, the special coconut juice hot pot and milk tea hot pot are recommended items.
3. Ah Liu Barbecue: Not tasted, but go early to avoid missing it due to the last bus time on the island.
*Shantou Food:*
1. Xinghua Wuji Beef Hot Pot: Make an appointment in advance on the Princess number, must order beef dumplings, other beef is also delicious.
2. Chen Ji Shunhe Beef Hot Pot: Near Shantou Station, the taste is good.
3. A Cup of Chao Tea: Must drink in Shantou, the appearance is attractive, cream top and full sugar can be tried.
4. Twelve Middle School Strawberry Ice: Try a cup, winter ice warriors can try.
5. Ah Guang Licorice Fruit: The taste is sour and sweet.
I really don't regret going to Nan'ao Island this season!
Nan'ao Island is really good for taking pictures
It's winter, it's time to go to some warm islands to renew the summer. Take bus 161k directly from Shantou Railway Station (one bus per hour, grasp the time, we didn't plan well, the time we arrived just left, didn't want to waste time and took a carpool, 30 per person, 50 bargained down, haha really smart)
". Nan'ao Island is quite big and there are many scenic spots. Sisters who are not self-driving are recommended to rent a small electric car. We rented 50 a day and a deposit of 50. The cost performance is super high and the power is very durable. After a whole day of speeding, only two grids are used.
In terms of route, you can follow the navigation around the sea. The more popular lighthouse, bridge, square, lonely tree, and Tropic of Cancer are all on the way.
Because my sisters and I are senior islanders, we didn't take the usual route and took the mountain road in the middle. The view of the sea from the top of the mountain is also unique. We encountered a super photogenic mountain road in the middle. The leaves are dense and the sun is shining. It's great to take pictures. Sisters who have visited the island can hide it.
Pay attention
Pay attention to the sunset time. It's best not to be in the mountains when it's dark. The mountain road is quite dangerous when it's dark, and it's best to get to the beach before sunset. The sunset on Nan'ao Island is really beautiful. It's the kind of beauty that you won't get tired of watching a few times.
About the weather, the perceived temperature is warm, you can wear summer skirts, but when the sea breeze blows over, under the shade of trees and when riding a bike, it's very cold. It is generally recommended to wear early spring and autumn clothes, or summer clothes with a large coat
Trust me, traveling to Nan'ao Island is so wonderful, quickly save this practical guide
On the right is the sea, on the left is a large area of bougainvillea, leisurely and comfortable is my evaluation of Nan'ao Island.
I stayed on Nan'ao Island for 6 days. I planned to stay for three nights before departure, but it was so comfortable that I extended it for 2 nights.
✨I went in early November, you can wear shorts and suspenders, but it is recommended to wear a long sleeve when riding a bike.
✨The temperature is not stuffy, very comfortable, wearing shorts is no problem, you can change into long pants when you go to the beach at night.
⏰Time planning
Nan'ao Island can be finished in two days, if your time is limited, 2-3 days are also OK.
Ps: If you want to find a small island to lie flat and experience slow life, here is really too suitable, cost-effective!!
·
🚗Transportation
1⃣Bus: Route 161 (15 yuan), you can rent an electric bike to go around the island for 60-100 yuan;
2⃣Rent a car: Rent a car from Shantou and drive around the island (highway fee 96)
3⃣Taxi: I don't recommend it personally, the taxi fare is higher, it depends on the individual.
·
🏠Accommodation:
It is recommended to stay near Houzhai Town, it is very convenient to eat, it is a more concentrated town, if you live far away, it is not convenient to eat;
I stayed in a sea view homestay, the cream style is very suitable for young ladies to take pictures together and eat takeout 😂
·
📋Notes for renting a car to go around the island:
✅Start from the south line to go around the island, so you are riding along the seaside, you won't miss any scenery.
✅If you have enough time, you can go around the south line one day and the north line one day, I personally feel that the experience will be better.
✅There are many stalls for renting cars, you can compare and bargain more (I rented for two days, bargained to 50 a day, there is no problem with the battery around the island).
·
💰About the cost
This cost is only my cost in the off-season in November, there are basically no tourists in November.
Accommodation: 500 (this is the price for 5 nights, picture 10 and picture 11 are photos of the homestay, there is a refrigerator and a balcony 😂 I didn't plan to post notes, so I didn't take pictures, the refrigerator is very nice in cream style)
Rent a car: 100
Island bus: 30 (round trip)

Just came back from Chaoshan, let me tell you the truth, I suggest you read this before you go
At first, I really went to Chaoshan for the food.
But the trip to Chaoshan in 2024 made me re-evaluate it.
The festive atmosphere, the warmth of the people, and their adherence to traditional culture moved me to tears. Having been to over 200 cities, I can responsibly say that this is the city with the richest New Year flavor, without a doubt.
-
You say 'truly intoxicating', and I find myself in the real Shantou.
Drinking authentic Chaoshan tea among the crowd in the small park.
Getting swept up in the fervor of the 'Chinese War Dance' and English songs and dances.
Watching the sun slowly set, turning the water into a sea of oranges.
-
Of course, Chaoshan is not just about Shantou.
When you're in Chaoshan, you have to take a trip to Chaozhou, right?
Come see the 'demolishing bridge after crossing' at Guangji Bridge.
Check out the largest archway street.
And have a steaming hot pot of sand pot porridge and beef hot pot.
-
👉How to play❓

1️⃣Guanyin Temple: The busiest rooftop in the country is right here, where Chinese classical literature is carved by craftsmen, exquisitely beautiful.
-
2️⃣Small Park: The buildings here have a very Hong Kong style, and you can take classic photos of the Small Park window scene from the second floor of kcoffee.
-
3️⃣English songs and dances: English songs and dances are performed throughout the entire first lunar month, you can check in advance which village starts the parade!
-
4️⃣Guangji Bridge: The prototype of 'demolishing bridge after crossing', part of it is connected by chained boats, which are dismantled at sunset.
-
5️⃣Qinglong Ancient Temple: You can come here to draw divination sticks, which are said to be very efficacious.
-
6️⃣Chaozhou Ancient City: The night view of the ancient city is beautiful, and Archway Street looks amazing when shot with a telephoto lens.
-
👉How to get there❓
Chaoshan has a high-speed train station, and you can also fly directly. Chaoshan is mainly divided into Shantou, Chaozhou, and Jieyang, each with different stations. If you have a car, it would be more convenient to drive.

Shantou Small Park Kaibu Area
Shantou Small Park Kaibu Area starts from the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Pavilion, with arcade streets radiating in a circular pattern, forming the urban block. The Kaibu Area has well preserved the original appearance of the Shantou streets from the 1930s, witnessing and carrying the history of Shantou as a 'hundred-year-old port'. We arrived at Shantou Small Park just in time for the International Lantern Festival, which made the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Pavilion Square even more beautiful. Exploring the Small Park Kaibu Area is just a walk away, and each street will bring you surprises.

Shantou Old Town Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Real and ungentrified
Shantou is a port side city in the province of Guangdong. Being one of the many treaty ports opened during the Qing dynasty, it was a center of international trading. As such, the area now houses signs of this historic presence.
The historic part of Shantou is not as touristy as one might expect; many of the historic buildings in the center are lightly restored, but nothing is really remade to look fake and overly gentrified. In fact, many of them lie abandoned and in ruins. For me, I find this adds character to the overall area, as there's a sense of authenticity among these buildings that tell stories of their past. There's a small park in the area, which serves as the main focal point of the area.
You can't leave the Old town without venturing a bit further to sample the famous Shantou beef balls. Many of the restaurants make them on site and you'll see them beating the beef, resulting in a very chewy textured beef ball that you can't get enough of!
Overall, Shantou is a historic city with many buildings with character. You'll get lost wandering the old streets that are lined with buildings that have seen better days! Don't leave the city without grabbing a bowl (or two or three) of its famous beef balls!

3️⃣ Nanbin Park: Super beautiful, with the seaside! Sunset. This should be the perfect place to watch the sunset over Queshi Bridge~ (There's a parking lot, parking is free)
4️⃣ Shantou Old Town: There are many buildings from the early 20th century, this is a bustling commercial area of Shantou, with historical buildings like the department store, Yongping Restaurant, Shantou Post Office building, and Laomagong still retaining their original appearance.
5️⃣ Square Ferry: For just 1 yuan, you can enjoy the beautiful sunset here
6️⃣ Nan'ao Island: The scenery is super beautiful, a very healing small island
7️⃣ Shuixian Ancient Temple: Locals call it Shuixian An, founded at the end of the Ming and beginning of the Qing dynasty, revived during the Republic of China era, and expanded and restored in 1996 and 1997. There are QR code electric cars and electric car rentals on Nan'ao Island, not recommended!
The distance around the island is also far, it will cost over a hundred for a day and it's very tiring
🚌The most convenient way to travel around Shantou is by bus, DiDi, or electric scooter
🚏For the bus, you can get a bus card on Alipay
Impressions of Shantou
Visiting Shantou, we took the high-speed train from Shanghai, which was very convenient. This time we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Shantou Chaoyang, where the environment and services were all very satisfactory. The old town of Shantou is definitely worth a visit, with its ancient architecture and a variety of delicious food, it truly made me feel reluctant to leave.

🏠: Island Stay·Separate Courtyard (San'ao Egret Bay Store)
A homestay in South Australia turned me into the boss's favorite
The company is going to South Australia for team building! The boss asked me to choose a homestay, and after a lot of research, I settled on this one on South Australia Island, which is only a 10-minute drive from Qing'ao Bay🏠
I must say, I really have an eye for this✨
As soon as my colleagues arrived at the homestay, they were all amazed‼️
🏞️The green water, green mountains, blue sky, and white houses are all so beautiful
There's a big lawn where you can camp⛺️ and have a barbecue🍖
There's also a swimming pool🏊, I regret not bringing a swimsuit👙, can only take pictures like this
🪵The rooms are all log style, very upscale and comfortable
And the soundproofing is great, you can sleep until dawn with your head on the pillow!
I've never felt so reluctant to leave after a team building event😭
Next time I'll bring my own friends here‼️
Nan'ao Island is a place you never tire of, with its beaches and sea, you just want to stay forever
The homestays on Nan'ao Island are all beautiful, and the one we stayed in this time with the kids was absolutely amazing! Close to the mountains and water, embracing nature, the main theme is a simple and atmospheric white. Upon arrival, we found it to be even more surprising than expected, with a wabi-sabi style design that's super photogenic!
The location of this homestay is right at the foot of the mountain, not too far from the sea, and just through a small alley is Egret Bay. Staying here, you look out to a fresh expanse of greenery, with a green lawn in front of the door that stretches all the way to the foot of the mountain, connecting with the mountain itself. There's a blue swimming pool reflecting the sky, and a few steps of stone-paved paths leading to the homestay's lobby. Under the eaves, wooden floors are laid with casual soft recliners, where you can sip on tea and have a leisurely chat amidst this tranquil beauty, enjoying the peacefulness of time.
The guest room layout is simple and generous. The room we chose has a large terrace facing the mountain, and there's also a huge bathtub for soaking, with bath bags provided by the homestay. In the morning, go out to the balcony to breathe in the fresh air of the green woods, and feel the charm of nature in this Zen-like atmosphere.

The delicious breakfast and service at the homestay also add points. The owner will turn on the air conditioning for us in advance, help with luggage and so on, which is very enthusiastic. They also brought over a fresh fruit platter, just ask who wouldn't like such a warm welcome.
Nan'ao Island | Finally found a B&B on Nan'ao Island that I really like
It's rare to come out and relax with sisters 😭 Finding a B&B was really a headache...
I heard from a friend that a new mountain view B&B has recently opened in Nan'ao, and it seemed pretty good, so we booked this one on the spot~~
How should I put it... The experience was really much better than I expected!!
I probably prefer this kind of retreat from the mundane world, a paradise on earth feeling~~
Spent a very memorable weekend here~~
I have to say... this place is simply a great spot for us office workers to relax and unwind ✌️
What surprised me the most was... in addition to accommodation, they also have a hot pot restaurant, swimming pool, and other facilities... really everything you need ✔️✔️
This is just too convenient for us lazy people, right? 😭
The summer nights are really cool 🍂
Spent a very beautiful barbecue night on the lawn with friends ✌️
Chatted all night long ✔️ Partied until we couldn't anymore ✔️
Who can understand this kind of joy~~
🅿️ And!!! It's only a ten-minute drive from here to Qing'ao, which is so convenient!!

"One true word from you, and I'm truly in Shantou"
Spent the holidays with friends on a laid-back trip to Shantou, focusing on eating, drinking, and wandering to experience the slow pace of life
-Travel and Accommodation Suggestions
✈️Pudong Airport - Jieyang Airport
After landing, you can choose to take a taxi, the airport bus directly to the city center, or the airport shuttle to Jieyang Station and then take the high-speed train to Shantou Station (all of which take about 1-1.5h)
🏠It is recommended to stay near Vientiane City in the city center
Vientiane City is located in the center of the city, with convenient living facilities nearby, very close to Longyan South Road Food Street, and it is convenient to go to Xiaogongyuan or Nan'ao Island/Mayu Island (located in the middle)
🚌Traveling in Shantou is absolutely inseparable from motorcycles, you'll definitely get addicted!
Just use Weixin to scan and go, stop wherever you want, and feel the speed and passion of the city haha
-Itinerary
Shantou city is not big, plus a few famous islands
Inside the city, Xiaogongyuan is worth visiting, it is a must-visit landmark, Xiaogongyuan scenic area is very small, 2h is enough for taking photos📷, you can book the museum on the same day or pay attention to local events like Yingge Dance Lantern Festival, etc.
Nan'ao Island's ring road is very famous, as well as the lighthouse, but when we went, it was peak time and it took hours to get on the island, so we gave up and turned to Mayu Island, which is also very small haha, mainly seaside rocks, the statue of Guanyin looking out to sea, mural village, etc.
Additionally, on the first night, we went to the East Coast Avenue to set off fireworks (super cool!)
Here's the plan👇
Day1 Xiaogongyuan Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion - Shantou Post Office - Shantou Hotel - Arcade Buildings (mostly in Xiaogongyuan) - Xiti Park (best spot to photograph Shantou Panstone Bridge) - Rest in the homestay after lunch - Fireworks by the sea after dinner
Day2 Mayu Island: Tao Zhu Pavilion - Mayu Blue Bookstore - Group photo on the seaside rocks - Mural village on the west side of the island - Mazu Temple - Mayu Community Emergency Shelter (best spot to photograph Shantou Bay Bridge)
In short, experiencing local life and appreciating Chaozhou scenery only accounted for 40% of the Shantou trip, the main focus was on eating and drinking, the next article will continue to share!
Shantou Mayu Island | The road to the seaside is always gentle and romantic
Mayu Island Tourist Area Mayu Island, a fishing village island hidden in the bustling city, has two Tianhou Palaces built during the Yuan and Qing dynasties, hence the name Mayu. It is said that a long time ago, ships passing by here to go to sea had to release a live chicken at the Tianhou Palace, and for a while, the island became a kingdom of chickens, hence it was also called the Chicken Releasing Island
🚏Tour Route: Seaside landscape flower sea beach > Taozhu Pavilion > Seaside plank road > Enter the community hinterland along the ring island road > Ferry Culture Square > Ecological Park > Mazu Square > Tianhou Palace > Seaside road exotic architecture
Walking on the road, you can see fishermen drying various seafood at street corners everywhere, the air is filled with a faint scent, the walls of fishermen's residential buildings are covered with various interesting graffiti, and there is a glass house library. Here, nature, art, and culture blend together, offering a surprise at every step👀
When leaving Mayu Island, I saw a tall Guanyin statue on the mountain from the bridge, overlooking the passing traffic on the bridge, sprinkling the nectar of blessings to the world
🚃Transportation: Direct bus or taxi (bridge toll is 14 yuan)
🎫Admission: Free🆓
⏰Tour Duration: 2-4 hours
