Tamaya Ryokan
"Our stay here was absolutely perfect, highlight of my trip. We got the suite and it was amazing, it was newly renovated so everything was clean and shiny, I thought it looked way better than the pictures so I would highly recommend it. The private in room onsen was fantastic, just made it so much easier to onsen whenever you feel like it. The onsen water was also absolutely amazing, had the slightest tinge of sulfur so you know you're getting the real deal. I must have went in at least 5 separate times cause it felt so good. The floor felt like real wood and there were fresh cut flowers in the room. The public onsen was also very good, at least the yin yang one has a cold water basin so you can alternate dipping in and out which was fantastic, the massage chair was also really good. Food was of the highest quality, very delicious. We got the fugu menu and it was very nice. Had a lot of fugu. Also tried horse sashimi! Staff were very friendly and polite. We felt pampered on our trip. It is slightly out of the way but taking the regional train on the last leg did feel pretty neat and authentic. I was so sad to leave, wish I could visit again. Feels like 7 or 8 out of 5, such a nice place. "

"Amazing hotel. Really peaceful and tranquil. Friendly staff. The onsen was relaxing."
Bessho Onsen Kashiwaya Honten
"We didn’t realize we had reserved a room for the wrong date until we received a notification from the agent. Fortunately, Kashiwaya Honten offered us a discounted price for our new booking, which was very thoughtful of them. We finally stayed one night in the Main Building Suite Room. It was very comfortable, clean, and beautifully designed—better than the official photos. We had a good night's sleep and truly enjoyed the in-room onsen. Additionally, we appreciated the private 40-minute onsen on the ground floor of the main building. Every staff member, from the entrance to the inside of the building, was very friendly. The hotel is also English-friendly. Mr. Yamauchi communicated fluently in English with us via email before our stay. A lady, who greeted us inside, introduced the room and served our in-room dining, was also able to speak English. The only complaint we have is about the meal. It wasn't bad, but we believe it could be improved."
Ryokan Tsuruya
"In October 2019, when the typhoon had a big impact on Nagano, I was planning to go from Kusatsu Onsen to Bessho Onsen, but it was canceled (I was offered a glass of wine this time). I rebooked this inn for the first time in 4 years. Reviews are mixed: black phone, old, cold, no hot water. The room is a Kyoto room, so it's small in a Kanto style, but the lintel, nagaoshi, and wall features are more elaborate than they look. I don't really like eating in my room. The food was a good amount and included matsutake mushrooms. The bar counter in the lobby has also been transformed into a reading area for the owner, and the garden is lush enough to remind you of the beauty of yesteryear. The hot water is good, but the water is sulfur and acidic, so the faucets here and there are broken, but that's just as the reviews say. There are two parking spaces in front of the inn, and the rest will probably be parked in the hot spring parking lot. I like the fact that it's a family-run business, so there's no annoying customer service, and the host and landlady's natural customer service."
Kakeyu Onsen Kutsurogi No Yado Kuroiwa Ryokan
"It was very clean and the food was delicious no matter what I received. The bath wasn't big at all, but it was clean and relaxing. I will visit you again next year."

Nanakusa No Yu
"The head chef of this inn is from Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. Therefore, ingredients from Goto, where he was born and raised, are used abundantly. This time, the menu included sashimi of "kue" (grouper), a light dish of "Goto udon pasta," and steamed "kankoro mochi." There is a strong influence from the food culture of Goto Islands. Fish from the Goto Sea have firm flesh and little fishy smell. Goto udon noodles are thin and chewy, and the broth shines through. The cuisine at Nanagusa no Yu is the type that values the broth and lingering aftertaste rather than the assertiveness of the ingredients, and it is delicious even without being strong. I also felt the "tranquility of the mountains" and the "depth of the sea" at Nanagusa no Yu."
Saito Hotel
"There were plenty of things to experience, like the gym, pool, and sports classes, so a longer stay would be ideal. I couldn't do everything in two nights and three days. I would have liked to have done a one-day tour (to Obuse Town, Mugonkan, etc.) if I had more time."
Ryokan Hanaya
"When I checked in, I was surprised to see a woman wearing a Taisho Roman style arrow pattern and hakama. His demeanor is relaxed and truly retro. Impatient people may get irritated. Everything is Japanese retro. The lobby and the hallway that runs through the garden are truly retro. The scenery looked like something you could see in a historical drama. There are 3 baths. The two bathrooms are divided into a men's bath and a women's bath depending on the time of day. The open-air baths are separate for men and women, with separate entrances. Meals are taken in the dining hall, and the pillars and beams of this dining hall are reminiscent of a castle. At breakfast, the woman in yesterday's hakama and kimono was wearing a black dress and white apron. It was a Taisho romantic maid costume. Dinner includes 3 seasonal matsutake mushroom dishes. I had a relaxing time for the first time in a while."
Oedo Onsen Monogatari Shinshu Kakeyu
"Kakeyu Onsen , the old onsen village located near Ueda Nagano. Very nice view and best Japanese Onsen bath culture experience . must try ."
