This incident was reported by the local newspaper and immediately spread to the media in New Zealand. By December 2000, the number of bras had increased to 200, and they were removed again. This time the story spread even wider, turning the fence into a somewhat quirky tourist attraction that even the media in Europe took an interest in. Out of concern, the number of people going to the fence to hang bras increased significantly. By early 2006, the number of bras was close to 800. Controversy and Removal Although some welcomed the fence as a tourist attraction, others found it embarrassing and visually disruptive, posing an obstacle to drivers passing by on that stretch of road. Legal issues led to the frequent removal of bras, an action that occurred frequently in early 2006, with 200 bras being taken down. Some locals said that some Japanese students who went to school near Wanaka found the fence offensive, and many Asians and South Africans also thought so. However, local rancher John Lee became the guardian of the fence's website, refusing to remove bras from the fence because 90% of the letters he received about the fence were positive, and the fence brought frequent attention to the area. On April 28, 2006, after inspecting the fence placed within the road reserve, the local council deemed the bra fence a 'traffic hazard' and 'visually obstructive,' demanding its removal. The request to remove the fence led to the creation of the world's longest bra chain at a carnival held near Wanaka later that year. Although the chain, made up of 7,400 bras, was much shorter than the world record of 100,000, it raised over 10,000 New Zealand dollars in donations.
