I watched the movie “Gladiator” a long time ago, where 2 fierce men fought each other in hand-to-hand combat, surrounded by stands, from which came bursting out shouts of ‘kill’. This revealed the ugliness of human nature and the true meaning of survival, to be or not to be, in fact, was not their choice, the ultimate person who lived became a hero and king, and became a celebrity at home. I should say that I like this movie, or really liked it. Not just for the visual enjoyment of incredible heroics and thrilling struggles, but also for the curiosity about Roman history and the shock of the magnificent Roman architecture. "Rome outside Rome", is a description of the ancient Jordanian city Jerash by a Jordanian tourism portal website. It is universally recognized as one of the most well-preserved ancient Greek and Roman cities in the world outside of Greece and Italy, with the reputation of being the "Pompeii of the Middle East". Jerash was built under Greek rule as part of the Decapolis league, with a well-preserved Arc de Triomphe of Hadrian, the Temple of Zeus on the top of the mountain, the magnificent temple of Artemis, an ancient Greek arena, the magnificent oval square, and a lined Corinthian style stone column. Unfortunately, the old city of Jerash in front of us, is just a pile of ruins. The ruins present thousands of years of ancient Roman history and thousands of years of ancient Roman achievements. The Tigris and Socrates civilizations, as well as ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, have been annihilated during its the long history. Walking through the rubble of stone-built monuments representing the glorious achievements of civilization, I feel the shock of that period of history.
