Convento da Ordem do Carmo Largo do Carmo 27, 1200-092 Lisboa, Portugal The Carmo Convent (Portuguese: Convento da Ordem do Carmo) is a historical building in Lisbon, Portugal. Its medieval architecture became ruins after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and the ruins of its Gothic church are the main traces of the earthquake still visible in the city. The Carmo Convent is located in the Chiado district, on a hill overlooking Rossio Square, facing the hill of São Jorge Castle. It is situated in the quiet Largo do Carmo, very close to the Santa Justa Lift. Today, the ruined Carmo Church is used as the Carmo Archaeological Museum (Museu Arqueológico do Carmo). The Carmo Convent was built by Nuno Álvares, who was the kingdom's constable and a loyal guard of King John I. He fought alongside the king in 1385 at the Battle of Aljubarrota to defend Portugal's independence. After he considered his military mission complete, he joined the Carmelite Order in 1423, led a life of religious austerity, and was given the name Nuno of Saint Mary. He was baptized in 1918. The monastery's style is prominent, in Gothic style. It was built in 1389 to commemorate the victory of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with the design by Gomes Martins. Despite many problems during construction, Nuno made sure the monastery was established on Mount Carmel, and the top of the hill faced the hilltop of the royal palace (where the Royal Palace (Paço Real) and the Cathedral (Sé) are located). The great earthquake of 1755 and the subsequent fire destroyed the monastery. On the ruins, the Portuguese Archaeological Society established the Carmo Archaeological Museum (Museu Arqueológico do Carmo). There, we rediscover fragments of Lisbon's historical memory, from prehistory to the Middle Ages, including precious medieval tombs and heraldry.
