Best hiking spots Hong Kong
Dragon’s back trail is one of the most popular hike journey in Hongkong.
Why is it? It’s easy to access, easy to complete, very scenic and ends at a beautiful beach (if you want it to).
For many people, the Dragon’s Back Hike is their induction to hiking in Hong Kong. It’s also a great way to see the other side of Hong Kong – the side with no skyscrapers, with lush trees, sandy beaches, and the sea.
It’s also called the last leg of the Hong Kong Trail, this meandering path on the ridge of Dragon’s Back is widely hailed as one of Hong Kong’s best urban hikes.
Besides its attractive name, Dragon’s Back has a sightseeing platform near its peak that provides truly spectacular views of southern Hong Kong Island and its shoreline. Right at the trail’s end is Big Wave Bay. Take a dip or surf the waves for a relaxing finale to this hike.
The Dragon’s Back Hike is possibly the most popular hike in Hong Kong.
Getting there:
Directions to the TH from the MTR subway system and back:
Take A3 Exit at Shau Kei Wan MTR Station (筲箕灣站)

360° degree sea view scenery! 🌄
Dragon's Back is such an awesome name for one of the most popular hiking trails in HK! This hill is not that high, only 352 m. It's an easy hiking trail suitable for everyone. Expecting duration to climb up is 3 hours. This place is magnificent, and there are pretty good reasons for that. First of all, I like wild roads and this trail has it, except for some stairs, which are mostly from the beginning of the road. When you reach the top, you can enjoy an outstanding sea view from both sides and there are big horizons over there where you can enjoy the sightseeing wild nature with no buildings around. You can notice some beautiful birds over there, the sea, islands, beaches, etc. I fully recommend you if you have to bring binoculars so you can enjoy such a superb 360-degree view. Also, this hill is perfect for picnics, there are even some benches over there. The spring can be windy on the top, just to fulfill the moment of enjoyment. So if you are in Hong Kong and you want to hike, find a way to the Shek O beach, which can lead you to the Dragon's Back hiking trail, and when you reach the top, everything that I said here will make perfect sense for you there!

Another side of Dragons Back
I went to hike Dragon’s back on a cloudy day. I was a bit disappointed with the views but it was still nice to be outside. It was also very easy to get there by bus! Just catch the number 9 bus from Shau Kei Wan MTR station. The trail got a bit too slippery for me with the mud so I turned around and took the bus to Shell O country park, which is typically the end of the Dragon’s Back hike. I ended up exploring the cemeteries there! They are huge and span the hillside. There are Chinese cemeteries further up and a Muslim cemetery further down the mountain. Walking through them took me right back into town to get the bus back to downtown.#Cemeteries

Slay the dragon
The Dragon’s Back (Traditional Chinese: 龍脊) is a ridge in southeastern Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong, between Wan Cham Shan and Shek O Peak. It lies within the Shek O Country Park. In 2004 the Dragon’s Back Trail was selected by TIME Asia as the best urban hiking trail. Dragons back is possibly the most well-known and well-travelled hike in HK. This is due to its easy terrain, convenient start and end point, it’s proximity to the beaches and of course it’s breath-taking views.
was instantly surprised by how busy this was compared to other trails I’ve been to in HK. But it was a sunny Sunday and the temperature was perfect, so I guess local people just thought why not?!
Start the Dragons Back Hong Kong along Shek O Road, just a 20-minute drive from Central Hong Kong. Either take a taxi or you can take no.9 bus from Shau Kei Wan MTR station, and stop at the bus stop at To Tei Wan Village. The entrance to the Dragon’s Back is right at the bus stop and is highlighted with a large sign and map
The trail starts (and ends) very easily. It’s not difficult terrain and it’s quite casual to hike, even a beginner could do this I feel. After around 30 mins it was time for lunch. Vincent advised us to eat first and check out the views second. However, a few of us climbed the rocks to get some good photos and soak in the vista below. Much to our horror the lunch was almost gone. Lesson learned, next time have lunch first! It’s a funny story to tell at least and it didn’t really affect the day in anyway. After lunch came the bulk of the walk. Some stairs, some trail. All well-defined and easy to navigate, we soon began making great profess. The only problem was how slow some people are in front of us. Traffic jam on the mountain! Along the route there are numerous majestic photo opportunities and views of the vista below you. Beaches, oceans and even villas. The views are seared into my brain for all eternity. The top side of dragons back continue to give good views and good breeze from 360 degrees. However, as you descend the views disappear. With trees on both side of the trail, you cannot really see much and the 2nd half of the hike was a bit disappointing. The highlight being a refreshing stream to wash our faces and drink. Clean and healthy!
After defeating the dragon, you end at Big Wave Bay. Still recovering from the devastation of the typhoon, this a popular haven for water sport fanatics with surfers and wind surfers out in force.
The beach was clean and spacious, the other beach goers not giving us a second look and just going about their business. My opinion is that Big Wave Bay is a bit boring if you don’t go in the water. I’ve never been a beach lover and I didn’t bring a swim suit, so I quickly got bored. With little to see here I was happy to move onto Shek O village

Admiring the Back of the Dragon 🐲🐉
Such a beautiful day with a beautiful view 🤩
This trail is considered moderate and it took us more than 2 hours to complete it. What I love 😍 the most is the trail mostly unpaved which is make it more natural and fresh
In the beginning, it's quite steep and then up and down moderately. It's just amazing to walk along the dragon's back while enjoying the breathtaking view and taking a deep breath of fresh air, along the way 🥰
This is the perfect hiking 🥾
How to get there?
From Shau Kei Wan MTR exit A2, take the minibus to Dragon's Back/Shek O, don't forget to tell the driver that you'll be getting off the Dragon's Back.

DRAGON'S BACK
The final section of the Hong Kong Trail is a winding trail on the Dragon's Back ridge which is widely lauded as one of the best urban hikes in Hong Kong. Despite its catchy name, Dragon's Back has a recreational platform near its summit that provides spectacular views of the southern region of Hong Kong Island and its coastline. Right at the end of the trail is Big Wave Bay. You can swim or surf to complete this hiking activity in a relaxed manner. From Sheik O Road, you will first walk through a leafy path to a section of the Hong Kong Trail. After a minute of walking, the path opens to the sky as you climb up. After 20 minutes or so, you'll arrive at Shek O Peninsula Viewing Point with views of Shek O Beach at the foot of the hill, as well as the two islands off the Shek O Peninsula. Despite being open and exposed, the platform at the end of Shek O Peak (284 m) is the best place to get a panoramic view of the peninsula's coastline. As you turn around to observe the winding paths, you'll finally understand why the name Dragon's Back deserves it. Stay on the bumpy ridge to find “dragons” as you climb. Stop at Dragon's Back Hike Viewing Point for panoramic views of Tai Tam Bay west of the Shek O Peninsula. On a clear day, even Lamma Island in southwest Hong Kong Island is visible from the deck. After crossing the ridge, you'll arrive at Pottinger Gap. Here you will see Chai Wan high-rise buildings with wooded landscapes. After passing through a pavilion, you will pass steep descents on cobblestones and uneven dirt roads. The very end of the trail is very shady and sometimes slippery. Once you get off the trail and past the locals' houses, a beach popular with surfers awaits. Bayakan Big Wave Beach welcomes you with sparkling white waves against a blue sky.

We are traveling because we need it. This was our second day in Hong Kong and still haven’t decided yet where to go though we already have an itinerary. Thanks to Justelle for sharing his Hong Kong quick escapade (super budget-friendly literally!). Public transportation in Hong Kong is superb!
HOW TO GET DRAGON'S BACK
1. From TST Station ride MTR bound to Central (Red Lane) and then drop to Admiralty Station.
2. From Admiralty Station connect to Chai Wan (Blue lane - 4.5 HKD) and then drop at Shaw Kei Wan Station and follow Exit A3.
3. Take bus 9 at Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminal to To Tei Wan, Shek O Road. (Jump off)
I brought an extra shirt and swimwear because based on my research Stanley Beach is near Shek O Road. But due to cold weather, we decided to go home instead.
The driver will notify you when you are already in the jump-off area. Travel time from Shau Kei Wan to Shek O Road is about 30 minutes.
You can visit Stanley Beach after your hike at least to refresh there. In our scenario, we weren't able to visit the beach since it's already late, and also the temperature in Hong Kong dropped to 14'c.
(Please refrain from eating or drinking in any public transportation (bus, ferry, and train) unless you want to pay their fine. Eating and drinking in any public transportation are strictly prohibited.)

Dragon’s Back is a great hiking location in Hong Kong for those that enjoy hiking! There are many hiking trails in Hong Kong, but some have more scenic views than other trails. So, it depends if you are the type that like photos during hikes or just about the workout 😂

Dragon's Back mini hike
Was not expecting the hike to be very short but still turns out to be a fast and easy hike overall. Weather was very good and cooling about 25 degrees in the afternoon. I did not start from the common start point I think. Had to cut through a cemetry with loads of staircase to climb. Pure steep climb for about 15 minutes almost out of breath! For easier path, Follow the slope of Cape Collinson Road. Started late so did not went all the way to Cave D'Aguilar. Looped back at the Peak.

Huffing and puffing up Dragon's Back
Here is me huffing and puffing up on Hong Kong's Dragon's Back 😆, after which I was rewarded with a picturesque view of the Shek O area, Big Wave Bay Beach and Shek O Golf Course. Very worth the trek!
There's public van at the start/ end point, so it's easily accessible by any free and easy traveller! 👍

Departing from Guangzhou, the 18-grid can't fit the beauty of Guilin
➡️Seeing many little friends who went on a trip being pit
We did enough strategy before we set off, so the overall feeling of this Guangxi trip is still very good!
Day1⃣️:Guangzhou South Station-Guilin North Station-East West Lane-Longji Terrace
✅East West Lane
(Pass by and take a look, no need to go on purpose)
✅Longji Terrace⭐⭐⭐⭐
For me who has never seen terraces, it is a very worthwhile attraction! The temperature difference between day and night is quite large, you need to bring a jacket when you go!!! Especially when you get up in the morning, the distant fog reveals a bit of golden. The scenery is very beautiful!! Seeing is believing!
Transportation:
The reservation is a direct bus to the terraces, about 3h by car, 90r/person round trip.
Accommodation
We chose to live near Jinkeng Dazhai, the booked homestay has a shuttle service, and you can see the terraces when you open the curtains outside the room!
The owner of the homestay knew that we were going to take pictures and recommended a clothing rental shop for us, only 15r/set!!
Dining:
Choose to solve it in the homestay, you can try bamboo tube rice, quite characteristic
Day2⃣️Longji Terrace-Yangshuo-West Street
✅West Street
We chose to return at noon the next day, took a direct bus to Yangshuo, stayed near West Street, a double room was only 66/night, and there was a mountain behind the hotel, which was particularly amazing~
Don't eat beer fish on West Street for dinner❌
We ate dry mixed snail powder! It's particularly cost-effective, a large bowl for six or seven dollars‼️
Day3⃣️Xianggong Mountain-Yulong River Bamboo Raft-Xingping Ancient Town-Ten Mile Gallery Cycling-20 Yuan Scenic Spot Check-in
✅Xianggong Mountain⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The ticket is 60 yuan, and a ride-hailing driver was arranged to pick up and drop off, a total of 120 yuan. When I saw the sun slowly rising from the east, I felt the charm of Guangxi's mountains and rivers. It can be said that this is the best feeling spot of this trip💯
✅Yulong River Bamboo Raft⭐⭐⭐⭐
We chose the route from Shuiyedi Wharf to Gongnong Bridge, 300 yuan for two rafts. When we were in the scenic area, we shared a raft with others. Lying on the bamboo raft and listening to the song, passing through the mountains with different shapes on both sides, the three of us unanimously thought that the money was worth it!!
✅Xingping Ancient Town
Passed by when going to the Lijiang River, I personally think there is no need to spend too much time in this ancient town.
✅Ten Mile Gallery:⭐⭐⭐
You can rent an electric car and ride along the Ten Mile Gallery, you can bargain!!! We spent about 50 yuan for two cars
✅20 yuan scenic spot⭐⭐⭐
This is the last attraction of the journey. Because I was wearing Hanfu, I rented a bamboo raft in the river for 80 yuan to take pictures (this is the luxurious expenditure in the poor travel)
💕In Guilin for three days, basically eating snail powder in different small shops! So the expenditure on meals is not large, Guilin taxis are not expensive, so all travel is by online car-hailing, everyone is very happy in three days, no pits!
Guilin is really fun! Go again next time‼️
🚫Finally, we went to Guangxi in the middle of the month. If you want to go to the terraces, remember to pay attention to the harvest time of the terraces!!

Hiking the Most Popular Trail in Hong Kong 🐉
I'd been hearing about Dragon's Back since I first stepped foot in Hong Kong. It tops all the lists for best hike in the city, and now that I've gone, I know it is DEFINITELY worth it.
From Shenzhen, it's just a short ride into Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, then a metro and a bus to the trail head. The best part of this hike is that there's a huge pay off for a relatively short hike!
We wanted to take the path led from Dragon's Back to the beach but unfortunately at the time we went the trail was under maintainence. We still took a bus down to the beach and had a great time!
Highly recommend taking a trip to Dragon's Back if you're in Hong Kong. You won't regret it!

Dragons back in Hong Kong. Absolutely loved this place
Clear sky for thousands of miles, beautiful scenery in sight!
If you ask for the most recommended hiking route in Hong Kong, Dragon's Back is definitely one of them.
If the weather is good, the scenery will be greatly enhanced.
Longji has long been a famous hiking route.
Once selected by Lonely Planet as one of the best hiking trails in Hong Kong and also recommended by CNN Travel as a hiking route.
When you reach the top of the Longji Rice Terraces, you will feel that it is well worth it.
The broad view allows you to overlook the magnificent scenery at your feet, with the vast blue Tang Strait as the expansive background, dotted with green golf matches and orange-roofed houses.
The peculiarly shaped Shek O Peninsula and the clear water and fine sand of Shek O Beach may make you feel that the trip is worthwhile as soon as you see the scenery in front of you.
Go further ahead through the ups and downs, and follow the mountain path that runs along the sea like a dragon's spine.
The difficulty is not great, you can walk easily and handle everything with ease.
From different perspectives, you can see the same magnificent scenery of Stanley, Red Hill Peninsula, Donglong Island, Putai Island, Lamma Island, Tai Tam Reservoir, and Tai Long Wan, all presented before your eyes one by one.
The first impression of Hong Kong to people is probably a city of steel and concrete with towering buildings. Shopping or eating and drinking may be the only things to do, but in fact, most of Hong Kong's land area belongs to the countryside. For nearly three years, everyone has been trapped in Hong Kong with nowhere to go.
The greatest pastime is to go hiking, and it's also because of this period of time.
Let many people, no matter how long they have lived in this city,
Or people who have just arrived in this city.
Discovered that Hong Kong still has many beautiful scenery and Longji is definitely one not to be missed!
Transportation: Take bus No. 9 from the bus terminal after exiting from Exit A of Shau Kei Wan MTR station to the Tai Tan Wan stop, where you will find the entrance to the Dragon's Back hiking trail.
On the way back, you will pass a fork in the road, one side goes to Tai Long Wan and the other goes to Shek O Road. If it's your first time hiking Dragon's Back or if you have good physical strength, you can go to Tai Long Wan. I went to Shek O Road this time and walked for a few minutes before returning to the road to take the No. 9 bus or minibus back to Shau Kei Wan Station!
Dragon’s Back mountain hike
If you are visiting Hong Kong and are looking for a place to hike or trek, Dragon’s Back is a good option to check out. The paths are fairly clearly marked out and can be for beginners, although you will probably take slightly longer like I did. The view is nice on the top and you can see the shape of the curvy dragon’s back from certain vantage points, quite cool.
My overall rating of the experience: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
