Zhu’s Family Garden.⠀
⠀
An architectural complex that simply oozes elegance. With over 100 years of family history, the Zhu Family Garden is an incredible place to wander through, but can often feel like a bit of a maze. It took 30 years to complete, and the entire garden covers an incredible 20,000 square meters. With 42 different courtyards to explore, you could easily spend half a day here just exploring all the different nooks and crannies, and pretending (or wishing) that you owned a garden as elaborate as this one.⠀

The descendants of Zhu Yuanzhang built the Zhu Family Garden in Jianshui, Yunnan, a simple and unadorned county town known for its stinky tofu
Zhu Family Garden is famously renowned. Its surroundings are the most bustling and lively, with an entrance featuring an antique drooping-flower gate. The eaves of the house soar to both sides, and while the gate is intricately ornate, it's not particularly large. However, the world inside is truly another realm, vast enough to get lost in, reminiscent of the Grand View Garden from 'Dream of the Red Chamber'. No wonder it's referred to as the 'Grand View Garden of the Southwest Frontier'.
The price of rice noodles ranges from 10 to 20 yuan, mainly depending on the variety and amount of side dishes. The kitchen serves you a bowl of soup, and you pick up the rice noodles or rice vermicelli yourself. The first time I tried it, I didn't know how long to scald the rice noodles for and just poured them into the soup to eat. It wasn't until later, when I saw how another girl did it and copied her, that I learned. I felt so unsophisticated! I recommend the grass sprout rice noodles; this unique ingredient is just too delicious!

Compared to Dali, I have a deeper affection for this severely underrated small city in Yunnan
Hello, I am a connoisseur of lesser-known beautiful sceneries.
I've been to Yunnan many times, and each time I've overlooked the small city of Jianshui.
Jianshui is a low-profile city yet full of cultural and historical charm.
-
Locals fetch water from ancient wells and gather under ancient trees to chat every day.
Everyone grills tofu and barbecue together, sharing the interesting happenings of the day.
This place is far from the hustle and bustle, yet it has a strong historical and cultural atmosphere.
It's suitable for a slow-paced stroll to experience the local life and atmosphere.
.
🚗【How to get there】
It's a 2h train ride from Kunming, or a 2.5h drive if you prefer to self-drive.
.
🚶♂️【3-day 2-night travel itinerary】
𝘿𝙖𝙮𝟭: Jianshui Ancient Town ➠ Confucian Temple ➠ Zhu Family Garden ➠ Ancient Wells
𝘿𝙖𝙮𝟮: Lin'an Station ➠ Shuanglong Bridge ➠ Xianghui Bridge Station ➠ Tuanshan Station ➠ Tuanshan Residences
𝘿𝙖𝙮𝟯: Ant Workshop ➠ Wulong Lake ➠ Zitao Street ➠ Return trip
.
🗺️【Places you can't miss】
❶ Jianshui Ancient Town
Unlike most ancient towns, Jianshui Ancient Town is a place where locals live. There's no excessive commercialization, just small shops that locals also visit, and everyone sits around a table grilling tofu, chatting about the slow life over tea🍵
❷ Jianshui Little Train
This century-old railway has been reopened. The narrow-gauge train moves slowly, allowing you to take in the scenery outside the window at a leisurely pace. You can also ride an electric scooter🛵 along the Baituan Highway and visit each station.
❸ Shuanglong Bridge
Also known as the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, on a good day, you can capture the same 'golden light piercing through' effect as in the Summer Palace. It's really pleasant to take a walk on Shuanglong Bridge in the evening😭
❺ Xianghui Bridge Station
A stop along the little train's route, with French-style architecture. You can enjoy a cup of coffee, and there are many local girls holding baskets of freshly picked strawberries🍓, sweet to the core.
❹ Tuanshan Ancient Village
Located next to Tuanshan Station, with yellow walls and gray tiles, the village is not very large. Villagers sit under ancient trees chatting about daily life, and children chase each other on the stone slabs.
❺ Ant Workshop
The colorful castle is great for photos, but it's quite small. If you want to take pictures, you can enter for free with the purchase of a coffee or beverage☕️.
❻ Wulong Lake
After visiting the Ant Workshop, you can stroll around the nearby Wulong Lake. Lying on the grass here is really chill.
.
🏡【Where to stay】
You can stay around the ancient town, which is convenient for visiting and full of local life, or you can choose to stay near Zitao Street, where there's a night market🍖 and dining is very convenient.
.
🍧【What to eat】
Jianshui's specialty foods include Jianshui tofu, steam pot chicken, grass sprout rice noodles, and Jianshui barbecue. You can also go to the Zitao Street night market in the evening, where you can find all the mentioned delicacies. The small shops on the street are also generally reliable, each grilling tofu~

Jianshui - The most luxurious Zhu Family Garden
Zhu Family Garden, located in the middle section of Jianxin Street in the ancient city of Jianshui, Yunnan, was built by the brothers Zhu Weiqing, local gentry at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and is known as the 'Grand View Garden of the Southwest Frontier'.
The Zhu Family Garden covers an area of more than 20,000 square meters. The main building is laid out in a 'vertical four and horizontal three' pattern, which is a flexible combination of the traditional residential style of Jianshui, typically 'three rooms with six ears and a three-room hall, with one large courtyard and four small ones'. The layout of the houses is orderly, with courtyards layered and staggered, totaling 42 courtyards of various sizes. The entire group of buildings features steep ridges and flying eaves, carved beams and painted rafters, all exquisitely elegant. The arrangement of the courtyards and halls is reasonable, with a rich and endlessly varied spatial landscape, forming a 'maze-like' architectural complex.
On a good day, it's very photogenic, and you can spend three hours inside, experiencing the luxurious life of a wealthy Yunnan gentry. Some of the back gardens are newly built.
According to the locals, it used to be a military hospital, which is why it has been well preserved and has a first-class environment.

The elegant Jianshui Zhu Family Garden
The Jianshui Zhu Family Garden, a residence and ancestral hall built by the Zhu brothers, local gentry of the late Qing Dynasty, covers more than 20,000 square meters. It is said to have been built according to the layout of the Grand View Garden in 'Dream of the Red Chamber'. The interior is dazzling, with four core rooms named after chrysanthemums, plums, bamboo, and orchids. The steep ridges and flying eaves, carved beams and painted buildings, scriptures, paintings, poetry, calligraphy, and Zhu family teachings are all embedded in it. It is both luxurious and elegant, and does not lose the scholarly elegance. Appearing in the small town of Jianshui, it can indeed be called a wonder.

A city to slowly walk, slowly watch, slowly taste, and slowly reminisce
The ancient city is not very large, about 2 square kilometers. Living in the ancient city, the scenic spots are relatively close, all can be reached on foot. Zhu's garden is very beautiful, you need to ask a guide to explain slowly. After three generations of repairs, it's very exquisite.

Jianshui, a border city of scholars
Honghe Prefecture's Jianshui County, during the Hongwu years of the Ming Dynasty, the Ming court set up Lin'an Prefecture here. This border city of scholars, with the sound of reading like the spring breeze season after season, has brushed a thousand years, the green stone lanes, carrying water and chopping wood sketch out the ancient city's thousand-year charm. Tofu, Seventeen-hole Bridge, Daban Well, Jianshui Purple Pottery, the scholars reading at night in Hanlin Street, the soldiers guarding the border in Chaoyang Tower... These symbols of the ancient city, at the fold of time, are like a wisp of fragrant ink, lighting up the gateway to South Yunnan.

The paragon of garden art--Zhu's Garden
Zhu's Garden in the ancient city of Jianshui is a historical and cultural relic, a classic architectural masterpiece that blends southern Yunnan residences with Jiangnan gardens! Its various courtyards have many exquisite wood carvings, stone carvings, brick carvings and paintings, all of which show the superb craftsmanship of the craftsmen! The rockery, pond, pavilion, and gallery bridge in the back garden are ingeniously arranged and have beautiful scenery. It's amazing that there is such a magnificent private mansion in Jianshui, a small town on the border, which is very worth visiting!!

Jianshui is also renowned for its tofu. An astonishing fact that we learned during our trip was that the local community still use fresh water collected from ancient wells scattered throughout the village. The water from each of these wells is used for different things, for example soaking the soybeans in preparation for making tofu!⠀
⠀
Just next to an old well, Ximen Daban, is the Da Ban Jin (大板井) tofu factory. Inside, we saw a group of ladies forming tight little squares of freshly made tofu - using just their hands and a small cheese cloth - at lightening speed. Steaming buckets of freshly made beancurd are in constant rotation, and the sweet smell of steamed soy bean lingers in the air.⠀
⠀
Once all packaged up, these tofu squares are shipped off to different restaurants where, to serve, these squares are left to dry a little bit before being grilled to perfection.⠀

Zhujia Garden is located on Hanlin Street in Jianshui Old Town.
I went to build water many times, and I repeatedly went through the door, because I saw the bustling tourists, too lazy to join in the fun. This time, seeing fewer tourists, I really bought a ticket and walked into the big house with the title of Southwest Side Grand View Garden. A ticket of 35 yuan is also good.
Zhujia Garden was built in the early years of Qing Guangxu. The ancestors of the Zhu family moved to Jianshui, Yunnan, from Mayang in Hubei during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. They bought land and opened up mines. In the early years of Qing Guangxu, the construction of a home ancestral hall in Jianshui City, an area of more than 30 acres more than 20,000 square meters, in the construction of this southwestern small town, can be called a big hand.
Into the Zhujia Garden, the large house sits south facing north, and the entrance is the main door of the hanging flower. As can be seen from the floor plan of the foyer, the main building of the garden-style large house is in the form of "vertical four horizontal and three" layout. It is a typical "three rooms with six ears and three halls, a large patio with four small patios". Combined construction. The layout of the building is well-ordered, such as "Mei Pavilion", "Lan Ting", "Bamboo Garden", "Chrysanthemum Garden" and other courtyards. The entire building is steeply ridged, carved and painted, beautiful and elegant. The 10 "staying feet" along the left side of the main entrance of the Zhujia Garden are connected to the "horse running corner" behind it, and the "Zhu Hengtai" total trade name. On the right side is the family ancestral hall, and then to the back is the inner court. In front of the temple, there is a water stage and a winding path in one of the pools.
