The ancient city of Dukezong is the best preserved and largest Tibetan settlement in China. In recent years, with the development of local tourism, Shangri-La City has strengthened the protection and repair of Dukezong Ancient City, and recreated the historical style of the ancient city. During the Tang Yifeng and Tiaolu years (AD 676-679), Tuyu here set up a Zhaibao on the top of the big turtle mountain, named "Du Kezong", a Tibetan pronunciation contains two meanings, one is "castle built on stone", and the other is "moonlight city". Later, the ancient city was built around the Zhaibao on the top of the mountain. This echoes the establishment of "Nivongzong" on a mountaintop by the Naizi River, as "Niguang City", whose Zhaibao is no longer there, and the original site is a white tower. The ancient city of Dukezong was built on the hillside, and the road was uneven. It was paved with natural terrain for some old stones for a long time. By 2021, there were still deep horseshoe marks on the stone road. That was the message left by the horse gang for time. For the horse gangs who cross the ancient tea horse road, Dukezong Ancient City is a heavy town on the ancient tea horse road, and the first stop after the horse gang entered Tibet. This is a quite comfortable road. In 2001, Dukezong Ancient City was approved as a famous historical and cultural city in Yunnan Province.
