What travelers say:

The Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project was completed in 256 B.C. and lasted 18 years. The excavation of the Aquarius mouth was the most difficult project in the construction of Dujiangyan, which took 8 years to open the small gap. Baopingkou is one of the three major components of the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project. It acts as a control gate for the inner river and is a pharynx cut by man to control the inflow of the inner river. Control the amount of water in the Xiangjiang River, no matter how much water coming from the Xiangjiang River, the maximum flow from the mouth of the Aquarius to the Chengdu Plain will never exceed 700, ensuring that the Chengdu Plain is flooded and drought-stricken from people, do not know hunger.

Additional Information

Located within and as part of the Dujiangye Dam, a tourist attraction, Baopingkou started off as an artificially digged water channel no more than 20 meters wide for the purpose of adjusting the amount of inflow into the Neijiang River. Viewed from above, the waterway resembles in shape the mouth of a vase, hence its name. The topmost floor of Fulongguan Temple makes a perfect spot for a panoramic view not only of Baopingkou, but also the spectacular scene as the Mingjiang River surges past the channel.
