The formation of Baishuitai is attributed to the sedimentation of groundwater rich in calcium carbonate on the surface over the years. The snow-like white, the water-like flow, combined together, gave birth to the poetically named 'Baishuitai'. It is located in the hidden mountains in the south of Lijiang, Yunnan. Getting There - we hired a driver that took us from Shangri-La to the start of the hiking next to the highway, we noticed that this is also possible by taking a bus but since we sleep over in Halfway was convenient to have a driver that would pickup us the day after at Tina’s guesthouse with our luggage Attractions - beautiful and challenging hiking with lot of wonderful landscapes, the first day we started to hike around 9:30 in the morning and finished around 7 pm when we arrived to Halfway guests house, the second day we started around 10 am to get to Tina guesthouse around lunch time where we started a new hiking to descend to the bottom of the middle tiger leaping Gorge, this was outstanding and with very less people (to access here you will have to pay a fee to the families that are helping to keep the trial in conditions, in total you might have to pay around 30 rmb) Hotels - Halfway guesthouse the first night and Tina guesthouse if you want to stay one more day, in our case our driver took us Felei right after. Choosing to come to Lijiang in spring was definitely the right decision!!! My friends had long told me that I must visit Yunnan for its incredibly beautiful scenery, and I chose Lijiang for my trip to Yunnan. Before coming, I was really worried that altitude sickness would disrupt the rest of my trip, but after arriving, I found that the biggest impact was actually my own lack of physical stamina. 1 I chose a relatively easy route, Blue Moon Valley. I'm quite grateful that although it was an overcast day, there was occasional sunshine, making the lake water shimmer like jewels under the sun, framed by the snow-capped mountains like a scene from a movie. I didn't arrange any subsequent itinerary, so I could take a leisurely stroll around the lake to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Before leaving, I kept taking live photos, saying I'd take one last look. 2 Finally, I arrived at Tiger Leaping Gorge. Starting from halfway to the Middle Tiger Leaping, I marveled at the scenery I had never seen before all along the way. From Mr. Zhang's guesthouse to the Middle Tiger Leaping, it was pure mountain climbing with strong winds and lots of dust. By the end, my pants, shoes, mask, and nostrils were all covered in dust, and even the water I drank was mixed with dirt. This part of the journey also resulted in cuts on my hands and a swollen knee, making it difficult to climb stairs the next day. The kindness of strangers who gave me a mask and band-aids reminded me that there is true kindness in the world. 3 I chose to wander around Lijiang Ancient Town, where the vegetation coverage far exceeds that of other cookie-cutter ancient towns. Walking through the ancient town and admiring the flowers was like strolling through a park. Spending is entirely up to oneself, and my most satisfying purchase was Jiahua fresh flower cakes and Dongba paper.

Starting our trip in Lijiang, Yunnan, and ending at Tina’ house is a popular choice for many hikers. #mytripvlog The timing of our hike during the Dragon Boat Festival and rainy season could have been challenging, but we were fortunate to only encounter light rain on the first day. This made the trail less muddy and more comfortable than expected, which is always a bonus when hiking. One of the advantages of hiking Tiger Leaping Gorge is the presence of vendors along the trail. They offer opportunities to recharge and refuel, particularly before tackling the famous 28 bends. The availability of signals and arrows throughout the trail makes navigation easy, ensuring that hikers don't get lost. Additionally, the locals with horses provide further assistance for those who may require help ascending the trail. This is beneficial for those who want to conserve their energy or have physical limitations. Choosing to stay overnight at the Horse Tea Hotel, a few kilometers before the Halfway House, was a wise decision. It allowed us to have a more relaxed and easier start for the following day's hike, ensuring that we had energy to continue our journey. The previous article provided a two-day guide for Tiger Leaping Gorge, but some of you may not have enough time and only plan to spend one day, or you may not have the physical stamina but still want to take some cool photos. Then this article is for you—a relaxed one-day hiking guide to Tiger Leaping Gorge. Without further ado, let's look at the route (map at the end). This route is more suitable for self-driving: 1. Leave Lijiang by car in the morning and head to 'Meet Halfway' at Tiger Leaping Gorge. The drive takes about 2 hours and parking is free, but the mountain roads are quite narrow, and you may need to reverse into the parking lot at the entrance. 2. After parking, you can walk back a bit along the high line to take photos and check in. There's no need to go too far; there are two bends that are particularly photogenic. 3. After checking in, return to the parking spot and continue walking down towards the halfway direction to take more photos. 4. Coming out from halfway, continue walking forward to check in at the small waterfall. 5. This is basically the end of the check-in spots. Head back to the car pick-up point and go to Teacher Zhang's. 6. Arrive at Teacher Zhang's Inn and take Teacher Zhang's trail down to the middle of Tiger Leaping Gorge to check in! 7. The return trip uphill is a bit challenging. If you feel energetic, you can return the same way. If you're not afraid of heights, you can climb the 168 steps of the Brave Man's Ladder for a more fun experience! Tips: Although this route doesn't involve much hiking, the schedule is quite tight. Time arrangement: It is recommended to depart at 8:30 am, have lunch at halfway around noon, and return to Lijiang before evening. Equipment recommendations: Sun protection!!! Focus on sun protection, followed by looking good. Wear whatever looks best because the route is not very challenging. Just consider sun protection, including a hat, sunglasses, a windbreaker, an outdoor backpack, and trekking poles.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is honestly one of the best hikes I’ve been on! We went during the Summer so it was really hot during the day, however got a bit cooler after sunset. Biggest advice is to just follow the one path and there are signs to guide you along the way. You’ll bump into many animals roaming freely on the mountains🐄🐴🐐 There are many guesthouses along the way so you’ll never get thirsty or die of hunger! After about 2 hours you’ll stop at Naxi Family Guesthouse & fuel your energy with some noodles or rice dishes. Another hour you’ll find the famous 28 bends (literally so many bends😂) -mind the horse poo 😌. Other places recommended to eat is Tea-horse Guesthouse & the next day of the hike, Tina’s Guesthouse (you can book a bus here to Lijiang or Shangri-La). Tiger Leaping Gorge is the main gorge of the Yangtze River, located in Shangri-La, halfway of both Shangri-La city and Lijiang city (~ 90 km). This park is surrounded by mountains, you even can see Haba and Yulong snow peaks, few waterfalls and caves. If you are a rock enthusiast, this is a great place for you! TLG has three reaches, with different levels of trekking difficulty or the main scenic spot in middle reach. Few restaurants are available. You have few options to visit this area: 1️⃣ Visit Middle reach scenic spot (pictures), were you climb up and down stairs. Perfect for one day trip, only will take you a couple hours to visit the canyon spot. This area is inclusive for people with disabilities and elders, if you pay an extra fee you can ride the electric stairs all from summit to lower spot (yet, you will be required to climb couple dozens of stairs to reach electric stairs). 2️⃣ You can either go back to Lijiang or take another bus to Shangri-La. That will be an additional hour and a half. This city has no entry fee, and it’s the only site in Tibet that doesn’t request special permit to foreigners to visit. 3️⃣ There is a 3-4 days trekking tour that includes all reaches. Most people indicates upper reaches are the most beautiful. But is only available for trekking groups that will stay in local guesthouses (mostly Tina’s or Judy’s). There tours include visits to local villages. There is a public bus available from Lijiang to TLG, leaves at 9:30am and gets back around 2pm.
