The stone steps were built between 1875 and 1889. The installation years of four gas lamps on them are unknown. The earliest records of these lamps were in 1922. The gas lamp was reopened on February 29, 1948, and other gas street lamps in Hong Kong were replaced by electric lamps in the next 20 years. The Hong Kong government had hoped to send the lamp post to the Hong Kong Museum of History, and then decided to preserve it. The gas company supplied the gas and maintained it. In 1984, the Hong Kong Municipal Council ordered the four gas lamps in the United Kingdom. The gas lamps are now turned on from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and controlled by automatic switches.
