There is nothing touristy or vacation like at Doomadgee. But if you are different and want to interact with the original natives of Australia, the aborigines, then do so at the Doomadgee ‘Aboriginal Settlement’ near The Golf of Carpentaria. Though Doomadgee is not a tourist attraction per se, a lot of travelers still want to take in a visit to the settlement when traveling in Northern Australia. There are no hotels, cafes or accommodation except for the council guesthouses. The town does offer the very basic facilities of fuel, food and general groceries at the town’s only general store. Doomadgee is 127km west of Burketown and 398km from Borrolulla.
Visit the ‘Dumaji’ in the local dialect or “coastal sandy mound” home of about 1200 Waanyi Aborigines in the Gangalidda homelands tom learn about their history, sculptures, painting, art, and culture. Doomadgee Shire also has a few of the Yunjulla and Garrawa clans living in it.
Tip: If you plan to stay at Doomadgee or fish in the river, remember to apply to the Shire Council for permission.

The Billy Tea, cooked over open fires is very popular in the Shire and elsewhere while ‘dampers’ or the flour bread baked by the aborigines are also popular food to try at the only general store in the Shire. Shopping and nightlife are all about buying souvenirs, visiting the Shire marketplace, and shooting pictures with the locals since no restaurants or hotels are there.
