Manali is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Himachal Pradesh. The fact is that there is no traveler who has not heard of Kullalu - Manali. Manali, a part of Kullu district, is located at an altitude of 1950 meters above sea level. Manali is 250 km from Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. It is believed that the name Manali is derived from the name of the mythological hero Manu. Legend has it that Manu visits this place once in seven Manvantharas. Manali is also hailed as the abode of Saptarshis. Beautiful mountains and natural beauty make Manali a favorite among tourists. The annual winter skiing festival here attracts many tourists. Rothang Pass is a major center in Manali, famous for mountain biking and skiing. A must-see attraction in Manali is Rishikund, which is said to have been the place where Vyasa Harshi was baptized. Devotees see Rishikund as a sin killer. Another major attraction in Manali is Vasishth village, according to legend, the hot spring here was created by Lakshmana, the son of Ramasodara. Other major attractions here are Kalaguru and Ram Temple. The Great Himalayan National Park is a favorite destination for nature and wildlife lovers. It is home to more than 300 species of birds and more than 30 species of animals. Jagannath Devi Temple is a famous pilgrimage center located in Manali. The deity here is Bhuvaneshwari, the sister of Lord Vishnu. Believed to be 1500 years old, this temple is situated at an altitude of 1500 feet above sea level. The temple can be reached only after a 90-minute walk through the hilly path. Various forms of Goddess Durga are inscribed on the walls of the temple. Raghunath Temple is another major attraction in Manali. Manali has a lot to enjoy not only for pilgrims but also for adventure travelers. Mountain climbing, mountain biking, trekking, skiing and paragliding are favorite pastimes of tourists who come here. Deo Thibba Base Camp, Pin Parvati Pass, Beas Kund, SAR Pass, Chandrakhani and Bal Tal Lake are the major trekking destinations in Manali. June to September are the best months for trekking. Manali is easily accessible by air, train and road. Bundar Airport is 50 km from Manali. There are services to this domestic airport from major cities in India. The nearest railway station is Joginder Nagar. It is a distance of 165 km. Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation buses are available for sightseeing.
