The capital of Novosibirsk Oblast, which is part of the Siberian Federal District, one of the seven newly divided top-level administrative regions in Russia, and also the largest city in the entire Siberian region. Novosibirsk was originally called Novonikolayevsk, the largest city in Siberia and the economic, scientific, and cultural center, located in the southeastern part of the West Siberian Plain, upstream of the Ob River, and is the third largest city in Russia. The population of Novosibirsk is only second to Moscow and St. Petersburg in Russia. There are many factories in the city, and it has some of Russia's best universities, museums, and theaters.
