定海古民居风情街是定海古城的核心区域，是定海明清风貌的遗存。中大街、西大街是晚清商业街市，两边是两层的木制结构小楼，它们之间用封火墙相隔。每条街又分成了若干个坊，和杭州的清河坊、临海的紫阳老街类似。古民居主要是青砖灰瓦，高低不一，很有层次感和延伸感。其中，柴水弄的古民居保存最好，街道相对比较干净。主大街上各种店都有，人比较多，也比较嘈杂，没有什么科学的规划。这里的晚清深宅大院都是不错的，也有一些本地名人故居。
