Shimoda Tokyu Hotel

9.4/10
Amazing

Perched on a cliff overlooking the bay, the Shimoda Tokyu Hotel in Shizuoka truly shines with its 180-degree ocean views and open-air hot springs facing the sea. While the rooms are a bit older, they are well-maintained, clean, and spacious. The breakfast is lavish, featuring golden-eye snapper kamameshi, and the French kaiseki dinner is excellent. There's a complimentary shuttle bus from Izukyu Shimoda Station. As there are no convenience stores nearby, it's a good idea to bring your own snacks. This hotel is perfect for a relaxing getaway where you can simply unwind in the hot springs and enjoy the sea views. It offers good value for money and comes highly recommended.

I happened to experience a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in the Fuji Five Lakes area. The whole room shook violently, and all the bottles and jars on the table fell to the floor. Surprisingly, the hotel was completely fine after the quake. The earthquake resistance is truly impressive! 👍 If it hadn't been for the earthquake, I'd say this hotel is incredibly convenient. It's easy to get to Gotemba for shopping, and the bus service to and from Tokyo is also very accessible. My only regret is that I didn't get to see Mount Fuji 🗻

My experience at the Shin Akawo Hotel was absolutely superb. The architecture is grand and elegant, and the surrounding views are breathtaking. The signature infinity sea-view hot spring is incredibly atmospheric and truly therapeutic, facing the ocean directly – soaking in it was extra relaxing. The buffet restaurant offers an amazing variety of dishes, all fresh and delicious. The refreshing and detoxifying Yuzu drink was a perfect touch. Highly recommended!

The rooms are located up on the hill, but they offer free shuttle service to and from the station, which is great. As expected from a Marriott, it was clean, hygienic, and the service was excellent. The hot springs were very relaxing. It's a bit far from the main hotel, so breakfast isn't included, and there are no convenience stores nearby.

Beautiful onsen — our favorite stay in Japan with my family! The traditional breakfast was delicious with a very large selection of dishes. The rooms are gorgeous, quiet, and spacious — and everything was exceptionally clean. The cleaning crew truly does an amazing job. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful, making us feel warmly welcomed. The location is excellent, just a short walk from the train station, and having a washer and dryer available for guests was a big plus. Highly recommended — we would love to stay here again!

Kamenoi Hotel Izukogen

Overall, it's pretty good. I'd stay here again next time I visit. The hotel offers a shuttle service from Izu Kogen Station, but it's infrequent. To catch it: After exiting Izu Kogen Station, turn right and walk to the bus stop. The parking lot next to it is where you'll find the shuttle. Staff will confirm your reservation name, help with your luggage, and offer a refreshing cold towel – very thoughtful service. The hotel package included dinner, a late-night snack, and a buffet breakfast the next day. Dinner was very mediocre, I'd even say unappetizing. The pork was tough, the side dishes were cold, and the sashimi was overly chilled. The late-night snack was Dan Dan noodles. Since it was close to closing time, there were drips of soup all over the inside of the bowl, which looked a bit sloppy. Thankfully, the taste was quite good. Buffet breakfast was the most satisfying meal with a good variety. You can walk or take a taxi to Jogasaki Coast. If you're only going to Kadowaki Suspension Bridge, I recommend taking a taxi to a nearby parking lot, otherwise it's a 30-minute walk. A taxi to Mount Omuro costs over 2000 yen. To summarize: The toilet had a strange odor, the showerhead had low water pressure, and dinner wasn't good. Other than that, there weren't many downsides.

I would hesitate booking this hotel if you are looking for a “wow” experience. We had some issues due to bad weather and some due to service. We booked a room that ideally should have had views of Mount Fuji. Due to the fog, we saw nothing for our 1 night stay outside of the clouds. This is no fault of the hotel but worth factoring into expectations. We also had some service shortfalls. No one in advance communicated that we needed to select a time for the included dinner or pick the cuisine we wanted.  As a result, we got stuck with what was available. We also were not informed that there was a shuttle to a nearby train station (the hotel made up for this by driving us to the station, but the only reason we knew was another guest mentioned it). Lastly, we selected a meal option but were not told the supplement in advance so had a 24,000 yen surprise on our bill. Had this all been communicated in advance, we would have felt better about our stay. At breakfast, we waited over 20 minutes for coffee and had to ask 3 times before it was eventually served. On the plus side, the hard product is strong and our Kappo dinner was delicious. While this wasn’t a “bad stay” - I struggle to see how this hotel landed as a 3 Michelin Star rating and can charge the prices that are charged given some of the issues we faced.

THIS WILL BE MY TOP 1 BEST HOTEL. I will definitely come back this hotel again. Loved the place, loved the room, the view, the experience. A friendly and lovely staff upgrade our room, and we had the BEST experience there. I will always appreciate the hospitality and experience there. We had great breakfast there, and we joined for the driving experience and speedway museum. LOVED IT!

The room was actually quite spacious, bright, and comfortable, with clean beds and a fantastic full ocean view. However, the facilities were a bit dated. Also, probably due to staff shortages, the hotel offered guests staying multiple nights a 2000 JPY credit per night if they opted out of housekeeping, which could be used at the hotel's outlets. The hotel's location was a bit tricky to find. Arriving at night, the navigation led us through small alleyways and stone steps. Carrying luggage up those steps was quite a struggle 😰, and after descending the stone steps, we still had to climb a slope… 😂. I'd recommend taking a taxi if you're arriving late! Overall, this hotel was very comfortable, and it was a pleasant end to our in-depth trip.

Perfect! Words can't describe our experience. It was simply beautiful, showcasing the best of Japan: courtesy, cleanliness, meticulous attention to detail, and exquisite cuisine. This is the hometown of the Izu Dancer, and wasabi is cultivated right down the mountain. The hotel told a story about wasabi from beginning to end...
