You can't imagine that the bridge's predecessor was actually a concrete bridge on a local traffic road in Songyang. It dates back to 1974, when Shimen and Shimen - two villages on both sides of Songyin Creek. "Shimenyu" was originally a farmland in Shimen Village. In the past, villagers needed to cross the river to plant fields. Later, they slowly built a house on the other side of the river to form a new Shimenyu Village. The original design of the Shimen Bridge connecting the two villages was a gluten-free, ribless concrete hyperbolic arch bridge, with a total length of 263 meters. It was once an important passageway for north-south traffic in Songyin Creek. But the bridge's mission came to an end in December 2010. That year, the Zhaitan Connection Bridge was built and the Shimen Bridge was almost abandoned. Because of the long disrepair and safety hazards, the local government once considered demolishing the bridge. The Shimen Corridor Bridge is a guide to introduce the crowds to the surrounding villages, not only connecting the villages on both sides of Songyinxi, but also further bringing the flow of people into the neighboring villages. One kilometer away, the Wangjing Memorial Hall in Wangcun and the surrounding villages are built, and the Shimen Corridor Bridge is connected: the natural landscape of the covered bridge and the historical narrative of the architecture in the Wangjing Memorial Hall, which constructs the unique natural and humanistic landscape of this region. Walk slowly across the covered bridge, you can see the streams on both sides of the covered bridge, and experience the feeling of people in the painting. If you are lucky, you may be able to see the Chinese autumn sand duck on the covered bridge. The Chinese autumn sand duck is a species that survived after the Tertiary Ice Age. It has been more than 10 million years ago and is an internationally endangered animal that is rarer than the Yangtze crocodile. Songyang Songyin Creek is its stable wintering point. This covered bridge standing on Songyin Creek has gradually moved to the world. In 2018, the "Village Change - Songyang Story" Rural Architecture Exhibition was launched in Berlin, Germany, and the young architect Xu Tiantian designed rural buildings for Songyang, including the works of Shimen Covered Bridge, which triggered international enthusiasm for the exploration of rural revitalization in China. Today's Shimenyu Covered Bridge, connected to Wangsong Street, and then Zhaitan Township, is more like a sleeping beauty lying on the Songyin River, welcoming tourists from all over the world, and also connecting the traditions and future of Songyang people.
