Shunjiang Tower

Tongji Bridge goes down the stone steps to the north, facing a towering tower, this is the Shunjiang Tower, commonly known as the Drum Tower. The Shunjiang Tower is built on the 5-meter-high city wall. This part of the city wall is the only remaining part of the ancient city wall in Yuyao. It is very precious. Shunjiang Tower was first built in the first year of Yuanzhiyuan (1335) and was named after Shunjiang. There is an engraving on the upper floor for timing. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was destroyed and rebuilt many times. In the eleventh year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty, a large bronze bell was cast after reconstruction, which doubled as timekeeping and fire alarm. Shunjiang Tower, as a city tower guarding the geographical location of Yao City, was an important gateway to ancient Yuyao City and had a considerable strategic position. During the Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty, in the struggle of Yuyao people to defend their homes and resist Japanese pirates, a bell was set up on Shunjiang Tower. , drums, cloud boards, etc., played a huge role in the battle. Shunjiang Building is a prominent example of the use of official style in ancient Yuyao architecture, and has important architectural scientific value. Tongji Bridge and Shunjiang Building are excellent representatives of ancient Yuyao architecture, reflecting the outstanding architectural wisdom and ability of ancient Yuyao craftsmen. Since ancient times, it has been the landmark building of the ancient city of Yuyao, the historical witness of the ancient civilization of Yuyao City, and the historical logo of Yuyao City. In April 1995, Tongji Bridge and Shunjiang Building were named as one of the first patriotic education bases in Yuyao by the Yuyao Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Yuyao Municipal People's Government.
