How to spend the day in Hay-on-Wye — traveler post in Hereford

How to spend the day in Hay-on-Wye

A few ways I’d spent a day in and around Hay-on-Wye 1. Visit Hay Castle The castle opened to the public in 2022 after years of restoration & is full of history and folklore waiting to be explored. The lawn, shop & cafe are free to enter but I do recommend paying to explore the castle which is £7.50 for adults & free for under 18’s. The ground floor & cafe is dog friendly & the building is accessible for wheelchair users. 2. Go for a riverside walk along The Warren Only a short walk from the main town you will find The Warren, a beautiful riverside meadow with SSI status. It’s popular with locals & its riverside “beach” is a lovely place for a picnic even in autumn. 3. Enjoy the many cafes & pubs in Hay My personal favourites are The Granary for a light lunch. The Old Electric Shop for cake and coffee. Shepherds Parlour for locally made Ice Cream. The Blue Boar for a pint. 4. Walk to the Witches Pool in Pwll y Wrach Nature Reserve I love going for a stroll in this hidden nature reserve around 15mins drive from Hay. The waterfall is always a hit with the kids and often quieter than larger falls in the Beacons. I do recommend going after some rain. There is a small amount of free parking and it’s popular with dog walkers. 5. Get on the water. There are tons of nearby kayak & SUP spots on the Wye You do not need a river license to paddle or SUP from below Hay-on-Wye, which makes it a popular spot for those with their own equipment (at your own risk). There are lots of local hire companies that can get you on the water. My boys and I have had great times on the River Wye. 6. Climb the tower of Bronllys Castle Less than 15min drive away from Hay, you will find Bronllys Castle, which is completely free to explore and offers impressive views from the top of the tower. This tower has a turbulent history and is well worth a visit. 7. Of course visit the many amazing bookshops It goes without saying that exploring the many bookshops of Hay is a must! You literally never know what you are going to find and I don’t think I’ve ever visited Hay and left without a book in hand. #wales #southwales #hayonwye #Townofbooks #bannaubrycheiniog

A Super Underrated Sky-High Photo Spot — Symonds Yat Rock Viewpoint.

When it comes to western England, many people only know Bath and Coventry. However, around Hereford, Kyrcho, and English Bicknor, there is a highly underrated scenic spot—Symonds Yat Rock Viewpoint. It is an absolute must-visit for forest lovers and Instagrammers! You can take in the lush green valleys and the spectacular horseshoe bend of the River Wye. It is incredibly healing and breathtaking. This itinerary perfectly combines English idyllic landscapes, forest hiking trails, and a hidden bird-watching paradise. Whether you drive or take a train and bus here, it's totally worth it! A Roundup of Highlight Attractions: 1️⃣ River Wye The River Wye runs through the entire route, meandering with its native forests on both banks. In spring and summer, wildflowers bloom along the riverbanks, while in autumn, ginkgo and maple leaves create a colorful painting. Make sure to set aside some time to walk along the river and breathe in the super fresh forest air! 📍 Address: United Kingdom 2️⃣ English Bicknor A quintessential English village with old churches, stone houses, and quiet fields. It is highly recommended to grab a leisurely cup of coffee in the village center (highly recommend the little shop, The Miners Coffee Shop), pair it with some artisan bread, and have a picnic by the river. The atmosphere is absolutely perfect! 3️⃣ Symonds Yat Rock Viewpoint The highlight is, of course, Symonds Yat Rock! A 30 to 40-minute walk from English Bicknor will take you up to this highland. The viewing platform is highly Instagrammable, offering panoramic, 360-degree views of the horseshoe bend surrounded by the forest. On a clear day, you can even spot buzzards, vultures, and other birds of prey circling above, making it a favorite spot for bird watchers and photography enthusiasts. 📍 Address: Coleford Road Ferrie Ln, Ross-On-Wye HR9, UK, Coleford, England 🕒 Suggested visiting time: Morning or evening (to avoid large mid-day tour groups) 🌲 Real Tips: · The trail up to Symonds Yat Rock is a gravel and dirt path. Slip-resistant sneakers are recommended, and be extra careful after it rains. · The view is very open and it can get windy. Remember to bring a jacket if you get cold easily! · There is a small refreshment kiosk and basic restrooms, but it can get crowded on weekends or public holidays. It is recommended to bring your own drinks and snacks. · Popular photo spots gather crowds easily. If you want the beautiful view all to yourself, remember to arrive early in the morning. Practical Food and Travel Information: Transportation Tips: · Public Transport: You can take a bus (such as routes 22 or 34) from Hereford or Ross-on-Wye, get off at English Bicknor, and walk to the rock viewpoint. · Driving: There is a small parking lot at the entrance of the viewpoint. It fills up quickly during peak season, so it is recommended to arrive early or park at a nearby public parking lot and walk. Food Recommendations: · The Saracens Head Inn (HR9 6JL) is a riverside pub. Their fish and chips and craft beers are not to be missed! The large windows and outdoor seating are super relaxing. · The Coffee Bar at Symonds Yat Rock center sells simple English pastries and hot drinks. You can quickly refuel here after walking the trail. Summary of Tips: · It is recommended to set aside a full day for a slow-paced tour. No need to rush; take your time to appreciate the forest scenery or learn about the village's history along the way. · Check the weather in advance to plan your outfit. Light rain is common in UK forest areas, so bring a raincoat and a water bottle. · Bird-watching enthusiasts, remember to bring your binoculars! This route brings together forest hiking, the horseshoe river bend, and a classic English village. Whether you are an Anglophile who has lived in Hong Kong for a long time or a traveler on a short trip to the UK, it is definitely worth exploring!

The Stunning Stained Glass Windows Of Hereford Cathedral, True Timeless Art — traveler post in Hereford

The Stunning Stained Glass Windows Of Hereford Cathedral, True Timeless Art

Hereford Cathedral is a stunning religious landmark full of amazing stone masonry and craftsmanship, the highlight for me are the stained glass windows. I have always been fascinated by these kinds of windows and always seek them out for their vivid colours, detailing and sheer skilled work. It always amazes me how they can stand the test of time and endure so much sunlight and still maintain their vivid colours. Hereford cathedral have some of the biggest stained glass windows I have ever seen, with floor to ceiling examples throughout the main hall. Along with ornamental windows around the entrances and side rooms. Some of the smaller rooms at the back of the Cathedral have rows of smaller stained glass windows that tell stories, with each window representing a page in a book. This is something you really have to see if you are in the area, the entrance to the cathedral is free but they do encourage donations to help fund the restoration and maintenance of the building ! #europetrip #travel2026 #travel #trip #hereford #thingstodo #museums #myitinerary #citydaytours

The Mappa Mundi, One Of the Oldest Maps Of The World. Medieval Mastery! — traveler post in Hereford

The Mappa Mundi, One Of the Oldest Maps Of The World. Medieval Mastery!

The Mappa Mundi is one of the last remaining medieval maps of the world, and it is beautifully preserved in Hereford cathedral. It dates from around 1300AD and it shows the world as it was known at the time, it is a fascinating look at the names, shapes and trade routes that were thought to be fact at the time. It’s amazing to try and trace your steps by picking a place you recognize the name of and exploring the area around it, so much was different back then. The map focuses on Jerusalem at the center as due to religious reasons that was seen as the center of the world at the time. A larger example was destroyed during the second world war so this really is a once in a lifetime chance to see something on this scale. You need to pay for entry around $7.50 to see this and the chained library exhibition, both are worth visiting as these things don’t exist anywhere else! #europetrip #hereford #history #museums #trip #travel #travel2026 #england #thingstodo #myitinerary #citydaytours

Hereford Cathedral, A historical Landmark Full Of Incredible Surprises — traveler post in Hereford

Hereford Cathedral, A historical Landmark Full Of Incredible Surprises

Hereford Cathedral is one of the most striking pieces of religious architecture in the UK, with a structure on the site from as far back as 1079. The building has been lovingly restored over the last 100 years with it’s original features, stained glass windows and basements brought back to life. The cathedral itself is huge and you really have to go in to understand the sheer scale of the building. The stonework and attention to detail throughout the building is stunning and really makes you appreciate the craftsmanship that went into this wonderful place. The cathedral offers an amazing glimpse into it’s history along with it’s library and basement levels. There are also separate exhibitions with the worlds largest chained library, and the mappa mundi - a medieval map of the world. These are an extra charge but the cathedral itself is free to enter, just be aware that it is an active religious site so please be quiet during services. #europetrip #citydaytours #thingstodo #travel2026 #travel #trip #england #hereford #museum #cathedral

The Last Chained Linrsry In The World, You Won’t Believe Your Eyes!! — traveler post in Hereford

The Last Chained Linrsry In The World, You Won’t Believe Your Eyes!!

It is not often that you see something this unexpected, something that opens your eyes to something you have never even thought about! This happened to me when I visited one of the last remaining chained librarys in the world, it feels strange even typing this sentence! The library is the only one in the world that still has all of it’s chains and attachments, giving you the most authentic glimpse of a chained library in action. Some of the books are over 1000 years old and are some of the oldest surviving books currently on display in the united kingdom. There are old tax records, music manuscripts and local land registries - along with one of the few remaining copies of the infamous Magna Carta. The books are chained into the shelves with desks below to allow reading, the chains allowed people to access the books for research without them being stolen - a practice dating back to medieval times. You can get tickets in advance for 7.50 to enter the mappa mundi exhibition and the chained library. It’s well worth doing if you re in Hereford. #europetrip #england #hereford #history #museums #trip #thingstodo #myitinerary #citydaytours

Historic Hereford, Get A Feel For Life As it Was. Stepping Back In Time. — traveler post in Hereford

Historic Hereford, Get A Feel For Life As it Was. Stepping Back In Time.

Hereford is a historical cathedral city in England, famous for it’s old buildings, cobbled streets and laid back atmosphere. The city is a perfect day trip for people wanting a quieter pace in life and to feel like they are going back in time, the city has protected a lot of it’s historic buildings and many have been beautifully restored. There are long cobbled streets with black and white timber framed buildings, winding alley ways and historic markets - where you can still visit a butcher, dairy, green grocer and other by gone institutions. The city also has some of the oldest continuously running pubs in the area, with amazing original features, stain glass windows and original serving bars. The cathedral is obviously a huge highlight and it’s scale and condition is very impressive, along with it’s famous chained library and the museum for the mappa mundi - an original map of the world from the medieval era! This is a great town for families as it’s relatively quiet, heavily pedestrianised with a wide range of food options and activities. #europetrip #myitinerary #thingstodo #travel2026 #travel #hereford #england #citydaytours #trip

A Rare Chained Library & Ancient Medieval Map Of The World - Hereford Has It All! — traveler post in Hereford

A Rare Chained Library & Ancient Medieval Map Of The World - Hereford Has It All!

If you want something unique to do you can’t get better than this, head to Hereford Cathedral and see uniqueness defined. The museum contains the Mappa Mundi, chained library and a copy of the manga carta of 1217. The Mappa Mundi is a medieval map of the world etched onto a single calf skin - it’s been dated to around 1300 and shows the Christian world as they knew it. It’s an incurable time portal into that era as it shows how they viewed the world based on religion and geography. It has English versions translated along with videos about the map and staff to help explain it. It’s honestly fascinating and I didn’t even know it existed. Further inside there is an example of a chained library, the last remaining in the world and also the largest collation of chained books ever assembled. They date from 800AD and are chained into place to keep them safe and secure, a common feature in the early 17th century. At the entrance to the museum there is also a copy of the manga carta, however when I visited (August 25) it was a copy as the real one was being held offsite. Genuinely a mind blowing experience I’d recommend any one even slightly interested in history! 📍Address: Hereford Cathedral 💰Average Price per Person: £7.50 per adult #westerneurope #hereford #culture #architecture #travel #history #england #museums #thingstodo #citydaytours #myitinerary

FREE! You Won’t Believe Your Eyes At Hereford Cathedral, Centuries of History And Beauty. — traveler post in Hereford

FREE! You Won’t Believe Your Eyes At Hereford Cathedral, Centuries of History And Beauty.

Hereford cathedral is something you have to see to believe, it’s one of the most beautifully preserved buildings I have ever seen and I was overwhelmed by the detailing. As with all cathedrals the sheer scale of the building is really hard to comprehend, but for me it was the level of restoration and preservation that really impressed me. The main hall and atrium have Incredible stone work from floor to ceiling and the symmetry across the sides is amazing. The high roof allows some of the biggest stained glass windows I’ve ever seen with the most vivid colours - you really need to get close to see how much detailing and story telling there is within the windows. There are smaller rooms and alcoves dotted around the cathedral each with tombs and tributes to various historical figures. To the rear there is also a submerged tomb you can access and a side garden with a small cafe and gift shop. As with all religious buildings it’s free entry but they do encourage donations. I would highly recommend a visit and donate if you feel comfortable to help continue the preservation of this stunning building. #westerneurope #thingstodo #family #travel #museums #history #england #hereford #cathedral #architecture #culture

Historical Hereford, Enjoy The Unspoilt Charm Of This Magical Town. So Much history! — traveler post in Hereford

Historical Hereford, Enjoy The Unspoilt Charm Of This Magical Town. So Much history!

I recently spent the day in Hereford and was really impressed by the charm and character this historical town has, it’s something you should add to your list if you’re in the area. The city has a beautiful pedestrianised center that links all of the historical sites, along with the more modern amenities you need for a day trip. The highlights are some stunning Tudor buildings with their iconic black and white panelling, original leaded glass windows and quirky tilts. A lot of them have been repurposed into modern shops but have kept a lot of their historical charm. The butter market offers a glimpse into a world gone by where supermarkets didn’t exist, you can get eggs, meet and cheese along with various household supplies - and the prices aren’t as steep as you’d think! Also the cathedral is an absolute must do, it’s free entry into the main building with incredible stain glass windows, ancient tombs and gardens. There’s a supplement for the museum but it’s well worth the cost! Overall a really interesting day out, with something for everyone in the family! It’s also on main rail routes to Manchester, Cardiff, London and Bristol so very easy to get to! #westerneurope #hereford #england #history #cathedral #travel #thingstodo #family

The British Museum

My visit to the British Museum was completely transformed by Diana's guide. She didn't just introduce the exhibits; she connected the scattered artifacts into a coherent narrative of world history. From the Rosetta Stone's code and the controversy surrounding the Parthenon reliefs, to the Mesopotamian cuneiform and the historical context behind Oriental porcelain, her explanations were engaging, logically sound, vivid, and insightful. Dry history was no longer just cold text; each artifact came alive with a vibrant background. Her pace was comfortable, and she patiently answered our diverse questions. Three hours was incredibly enriching. Highly recommended! If you want to truly understand the artifacts at the British Museum, you absolutely must see her!

Windsor Castle

Getting from London to Windsor by bus (702 green line) is very convenient, even without taking the train. Photography is prohibited inside the church and castle. Seeing Queen Mary's Toy House reminded me of the inspiration for many miniature landscape designs in China. I personally think it's well worth a visit. Buying tickets is also very convenient. If you want to see the Changing of the Guard ceremony, enter the castle around 1 PM to find a good spot.

Buckingham Palace

After visiting Windsor Castle and Chatsworth House (Darcy Estate), we then visited Buckingham Palace. If you could only visit one palace in the UK, it would have to be Buckingham Palace. Photography is not allowed inside the royal palaces, as is the case with Windsor Castle, so we could focus on the guided tour. The gift shop after the Buckingham Palace tour has some limited-edition items available only there, making great souvenirs. I bought a Buckingham Palace + Royal Horse Stables combo ticket. The product page stated that visiting the Royal Horse Stables allowed direct entry to Buckingham Palace, but this wasn't actually the case. The State Rooms and the Royal Horse Stables are exchanged at two separate locations, not far apart. However, the ticket exchange and verification are handled by different people, and the verification personnel strictly adhere to the reserved time. The Royal Horse Stables houses the Golden Carriage used exclusively for coronation ceremonies, which is worth seeing; there are also carriages for tourists to ride in and take photos.

Westminster Abbey

This is a must-see attraction in London. The architecture itself and its historical and cultural value are both important. After seeing so many royal coffins, you can't even remember who's who. The tombstones of Darwin and Hawking are also a must-see.
