It is the only Chinese architectural complex that survived the Yuanmingyuan fire, perhaps because of its special location. It used to be a royal temple, but it was used as a private villa by senior officials of the Republic of China. The Buddha statue was demolished and the temple was renovated. Then it became a teaching dormitory in Tsinghua, and then occupied by a machine factory. So it was totally different. Nowadays, the buildings are very new. There is a Manjusri Pavilion which is special. There are several ancient trees in it.
