Cunnamulla is a small town and a locality in the Shire of Paroo, Queensland, Australia. It is about 750 kilometres west of its state capital, Brisbane via Toowoomba and 140 kilometres north of New South Wales border. While the town offers little to entice, it surely does have a charm of its own. The name originates from an Aboriginal term, ideally from Kunja language, meaning ‘big waterhole’ or ‘long stretch of water’. This town is known for its natural outback beauty and hospitality.

Getting There

Cunnamulla is connected via flights from Cunnamulla Airport (CMA) from Toowoomba Airport (TWB). There are no direct flights to Cunnamulla, and there is only a connecting flight from Toowoomba to Cunnamulla with a stopover at Saint George for about 20 minutes and the only airline operating this route is Regional Airlines with 2 Toowoomba-Cunnamulla flights per week. Things to Do in Cunnamulla

Cunnamulla Fells Centre, Art Gallery and Museum houses the Artesian Time Tunnel, a local art gallery, museum which contains a wide range of local artifacts and the Cultural Theatre. It gives visitors an insight into how people lived in the previous century. The Artesian Time Tunnel takes you back to 100 million years ago, to the beginning of the Artesian Basin when dinosaurs existed.

Check out the Cunnamulla Railway Station which operated between 1898-1994, the Post Office in Stockyard Street which looks the same as it did when it was first built and the Cunnamulla Fella Sculpture which depicts a Cunnamulla Fella (an Aussie bushman). Cunnamulla Coach Stop Mural located at the Five Ways corner is a celebration of the importance of Cobb and Co to the town.

The War Memorial Fountain located at John Street is a memorial dedicated to the brave soldiers who died for their country during the First World War St Alban’s Anglican Church on Emma Street was built in the early 60s after the original church became the church hall. There are other attractions around town such as the Bowra Wildlife Sanctuary which is ideal for birdwatching. It is 18 km north-west of Cunnamulla.

The sanctuary is home to 246 species of plants, 29 mammals, 218 species of birds and 62 reptiles. The diversity is due to the location, mounting the Warrego River plains and West Warrego ecological provinces. Experience the true outback spirit and heritage at the Cunnamulla Fella Festival held every August.

Tip: Take a stroll at the Sandhill Walking Tracks and explore flora and fauna of the desert around Cunnamulla, take a pleasant river walk across the bridge from the town centre and go on a heritage trail to get to know more about the history of the town.
