Chengdu Layover

A layover in Chengdu can be a fantastic opportunity to get a little taste of this cozy city. Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) and the older Shuangliu Airport (CTU) handle a huge number of flights, making it a common connecting hub. If you have a few hours between flights, you can hop on a high-speed train or the metro to reach the city center—the trip takes about 40–50 minutes. In this article, we’ve gathered everything you need to know about your layover in Chengdu.

What airports are in Chengdu: Chengdu Shuangliu and Chengdu Tianfu

Layover in Chengdu

Chengdu has two main airports. It's super important to double-check which airport you're flying into and out of!

  • Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU): an older but modernized airport. It's closer to the city center and primarily handles domestic and some international flights.
  • Chengdu Tianfu (TFU): a new, massive airport. It's further from the city center and handles the majority of international and domestic flights.

Connecting flights at the same airport

How many airports are there in Chengdu

If the flights are with the same airline or alliance (for example, Sichuan Airlines, Air China):

Follow the "Transit" signs.

  • You don't need to collect your baggage or go through customs and passport control. Your luggage will be automatically transferred to your next flight.
  • You'll need to head to the departure area and find the gate for your next flight. There are often special desks for transit passengers.

If the flights are with different, unrelated airlines (for example, purchased separately):

  • You'll most likely need to collect your baggage.
  • Clear passport control and customs (if it's an international flight).
  • Head up to the departure level, check in for your next flight, and re-check your luggage.
  • Clear security and head to your departure gate.
  • The recommended time for a layover like this is at least 2-3 hours.

Transfer between airports (Chengdu Shuangliu CTU ↔ Chengdu Tianfu TFU)

Layover in Chengdu at the same airport

The distance between the airports is about 80 km.

Metro

Route from Shuangliu Airport:

  1. Take Line 10 (blue line) from either "Shuangliu Airport Terminal 1" or "Terminal 2" station.
  2. Ride to "Guangfu" station — a major transfer hub — and switch to Line 19 (Airport Express).
  3. Continue to the final stop, "Tianfu Airport Terminal 1 & 2".
  • Total travel time: about 45–55 minutes on the fastest Line 19 train (express, limited stops)
  • Cost: about ¥10
  • Pros: fast, no traffic jams, cheap
  • Cons: you have to lug your luggage through stations, and it can get crowded during rush hour

The hotel has obvious pros and cons. The pros are that it meets standard five-star expectations. The rooms are generally good and spacious enough, perfect for families with two children as the bunk beds plus the large bed provide ample space. The location is excellent, right across from Chunxi Road. The breakfast is good, and there's a parking lot. The cons are also clear: the facilities are a bit old, the parking lot is narrow, it's not smart at all, and there aren't even enough power outlets. Checking in was also a bit cumbersome and required waiting.

Not to sound exaggerated, but Grand ParcVue Hotel is by far one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. Having travelled to many countries and stayed in different types of hotels, I would rank the overall experience and service here among the top tier. I stayed in a Deluxe King Room for 3 days and 2 nights and was already impressed upon arrival. I checked in at around 1am and was warmly welcomed by the friendly staff before being assigned a room on the 23rd floor. There was a slight unpleasant smell in the room, possibly coming from the kitchen, but it wasn't a major issue as I could close the doors to prevent it from coming in. I bought an air freshener myself, and what impressed me was that the manager came personally the next day to check on the situation and even provided an air purifier. The breakfast was another highlight. I enjoyed trying the local dan dan noodles, and I noticed many international guests from Korea, Japan and Western countries. The dining hall staff were all friendly and professional. The gym on the 6th floor was also surprisingly well-equipped, with a good selection of dumbbells and machines for a full-body workout. Even more impressive was the Relaxation Room on the 7th floor, where guests can enjoy several massage chairs 24 hours a day. There is also a Business Lounge on the same floor, which is a great place for meetings, conversations or simply getting some work done. The hotel is also directly connected to Yanlord Mall, so you will never have to worry about finding restaurants or shops. Do note that it is a high-end mall, so food there can be relatively expensive. One thing I particularly appreciated was the hotel's hospitality even after checkout—I was offered access to the Business Lounge on my final day so I could conduct my online classes comfortably before heading to the airport. Overall, I had an excellent stay at Grand ParcVue Hotel. The combination of great facilities, convenient location and, most importantly, genuinely attentive service made this stay memorable. I would have no hesitation booking this hotel again if I return to Chengdu. **Highly recommended!**

Traveling with kids, we stayed for three nights. Without a doubt, this is the hotel with the best value for money in China—hands down. The well-trained staff provided service that made us feel completely taken care of and at ease. The breakfast was lavish, featuring unique latte art, and the menu changed every single day without repetition. The room was spacious, and the facilities were exceptionally well-maintained, with no sense of wear and tear at all. The surfaces were almost miraculously spotless, which was truly impressive. We arrived quite late on the first day, and turndown service had already been prepared for us. There were no strange odors in the room whatsoever, which speaks volumes about the hotel's management standards. Chengdu is a wonderful city, and we will definitely stay here again next time. I also accidentally left some items behind at the hotel, and they kindly shipped them back to me. Truly a huge thank you to the team!

My overall experience during the stay was fantastic. This St. Regis hotel seems to have been around for quite some time, as the furniture and decor are a bit dated. However, the maintenance and upkeep are quite good, and the signature St. Regis elegance and quality are still very much present. The Manhattan Suite was very comfortable. It's quite spacious at 130 square meters, featuring a huge living room and a large, comfortable bed. It also has two bathrooms. The breakfast was excellent, with many local Sichuan snacks, and the freshly wrapped wontons were delicious. There's 24-hour butler service, and you can order free drinks to your room anytime. It offers great value for money.

I highly recommend this hotel with five stars! The location is absolutely fantastic, right in the city center. You can walk to Chunxi Road and Tianfu Square, and it's also very convenient to get to other attractions by public transport. The front desk staff were warm and polite, making check-in and check-out super fast. They also patiently helped us with directions and travel routes. The room was clean and tidy, the bedding was soft and comfortable, and all the facilities were well-equipped. The bathroom's wet and dry separation was very well done. After a long day of travel, coming back to the hotel for a quiet and comfortable rest was wonderful. There are tons of great food places and shops nearby, so you'll never have to worry about eating or shopping. Choosing this place for a trip to Chengdu truly takes all the hassle out of it. This time staying at Chengdu Ruicheng Celebrity Hotel, the experience was perfect!👍The hotel is in a great location, right next to Wenshu Temple Subway Station. It is very convenient to go to Kuanzhai Alley or Tianfu Square. The rooms are spacious and bright, the hygiene is spotless, the bedding is soft and comfortable, and you can have a good night's sleep. What surprises people the most is the hotel's ”Little Red Dress Butler” service. It is not only warm and thoughtful, but also provides a local food map. It asks every day whether the room needs to be replenished with items and mineral water, which makes people feel warm. The breakfast combines Chinese and Western styles, is rich in variety, and has excellent taste. The overall cost is very high, and it is the best choice for business trips or family travel. Next time you come to Chengdu, you will definitely choose this place!

We stayed for one night with our child to go swimming. It's an older hotel style, but well-maintained and clean. The only downside is that the bed was too small – I haven't slept on a 1.35m bed in ages! I'd also like to give a special shout-out to Ms. Weiwei at the front desk. We were in a rush to head out and didn't have our IDs, but she patiently helped us with the check-in process. She even upgraded our room for free! What touched me most was that since there were three of us, she arranged for extra toothbrushes and slippers to be sent to our room right after we checked in. So thoughtful! Thank you very much!

Every year, I visit Chengdu for a few recuperation trips, and it's always the Grand Hyatt. It feels like visiting old friends… It's been many years, and I've watched the Grand Hyatt grow and improve step by step… Every detail is a testament to the hard work of every Grand Hyatt employee! This National Day, I stayed at the Grand Hyatt again and clearly felt the changes in team management and the subtle improvement in service. The new employees were humble and enthusiastic, and the experienced staff and management showed great insight and quick, effective problem-solving skills – thumbs up! 👍 **Facilities:** The room was cozy and comfortable. The hotel had installed anti-collision protection on sharp corners in the bathroom, and anti-slip reminders around the bathtub. The peeling paint on the bathroom ceiling was also refreshed, and the room corners were clean, with toiletries replenished promptly. **Dining:** The executive lounge ambiance was still great; I especially love that touch of Hermès orange… The cakes, pastries, and drinks were unchanged, still of Grand Hyatt quality. However, the orange juice was too diluted. I suspect the Chinese chef in the executive lounge has changed, as the Chinese food has lost its previous Chengdu characteristics, and the quality of the ingredients is significantly worse than before, especially the cold mixed bean curd skin and garlic pork belly, which were particularly salty. For breakfast, the overall quality and features were maintained. Dandan noodles were still the most popular. However, most of the fruit and vegetable juices were too watered down, affecting the taste and quality. The previous carrot, celery, and bitter gourd juices were replaced by a 'vitality water' that felt cheap. The whole wheat bread was hard and not fresh enough! **Issues and Suggestions:** When collecting entrusted luggage, it's understandable that a luggage tag is required for security. However, if a guest cannot produce the luggage tag due to special circumstances, there should be alternative ways to verify the owner of the luggage, instead of demanding a photocopy of their ID. Such a non-compliant action could lead to the leakage of guest information and undesirable consequences, for which the hotel would be unable to bear responsibility! Finally, I'd like to express my gratitude once again to every staff member of the Grand Hyatt Chengdu for their hard work! I hope the Grand Hyatt Chengdu continues to thrive! Looking forward to my next visit! 👏👏👏👍👍👍🍎🍎🍎🌺🌺🌺

The hotel isn't new, but it's generally fine and has a smart toilet. The concierges at the entrance are excellent, very proactive with luggage, especially when we checked out and stored our bags. When we came back and took a taxi past the hotel, we asked a concierge to bring our luggage out beforehand to wait at the entrance, and when the car passed, the bags were seamlessly loaded. It was a fantastic experience! The front desk, however, wasn't great. I specifically requested a non-smoking room when booking, but the room assigned still smelled of smoke. It wasted half an hour to change rooms, and in the end, it was the concierge who had to clean up the front desk's mess, coming up to deliver the new room card. A big thanks to him! When we returned in the evening, we found the hotel had provided some complimentary snacks and fruit; although it was a small gesture, it was thoughtful. The lights outside the hotel are quite beautiful, probably from the Year of the Horse Chinese New Year. Overall, I'd recommend it!

My stay at Mercure Chengdu Tai Koo Li Chunxi was a delightful surprise, especially when it came to the room's cleanliness. The room was thoroughly cleaned, the bedding was pristine and fluffy, and the bathroom had a great wet/dry separation with every corner and crevice spotless and odor-free. The public hallways were also consistently clean and fresh. I particularly want to commend the front desk concierge. During check-in, they carefully inquired about my preferences and informed me about the room cleaning protocols. When I needed assistance during my stay, the concierge responded quickly and communicated patiently and politely. The hotel's location is excellent, within walking distance of Tai Koo Li and Chunxi Road. With such clean rooms and the concierge's attentive follow-up, I felt secure and comfortable throughout my stay. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting Chengdu.

I highly recommend Ascott Raffles City Chengdu! The location is unbeatable, directly connected to Raffles City Mall with plenty of dining options and a supermarket downstairs. It's also close to the Provincial Sports Centre subway station, making it incredibly convenient for getting to all the major attractions. Compared to a regular hotel, a serviced apartment truly shines. The room is spacious, featuring a separate living room and bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and a washer-dryer combo – perfect for keeping clothes clean on longer trips. The room itself is spotless, the bedding is comfortable, and the soundproofing is excellent. The front desk staff are warm, polite, and respond promptly to requests. The apartment also boasts a heated swimming pool and a gym, ideal for relaxing and unwinding after a day of travel. It's perfectly suited for both short getaways and layovers. This was our second stay at CDUNXI, and once again, the experience was exceptional. Our room was absolutely beautiful — spacious, immaculate, extremely comfortable, and probably one of the highlights of our stay in Chengdu. The breakfast was excellent, with a great variety and everything we could wish for. What truly makes this hotel special, however, is the staff. Everyone is incredibly kind, warm and attentive, always making sure that you feel welcome and well taken care of. The location is another major highlight. Being right next to Wenshu Monastery, the hotel is surrounded by one of the most beautiful and atmospheric areas of Chengdu — peaceful, charming and wonderful to explore on foot. We drove to Chengdu, and since there are traffic restrictions based on license plates, having a parking lot at this hotel was incredibly convenient. Shuttle bus

There is a direct shuttle between the airports.

  • Travel time: about 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic
  • Pros: direct route, no transfers
  • Cons: you might get stuck in traffic

Taxi

  • Travel time: from 1 to 1.5 hours
  • Cost: ¥250–400
  • Pros: comfortable
  • Cons: high price, risk of traffic jams

Transferring from a plane to a train (or vice versa)

Layover in Chengdu: transferring between airports

Tourists often fly into Chengdu to continue their journey by train (for example, to Xi'an, Chongqing, or Tibet).

From Chengdu Shuangliu Airport.

You can take the metro (Line 10) to Chengdu North Railway Station, the city's largest rail hub. The journey takes about 30-40 minutes.

From Chengdu Tianfu Airport.

Take the high-speed Maglev train to Chengdu South Railway Station, and from there, hop on the metro to the North Railway Station or wherever else you need to go.

Recommended time: considering baggage claim and travel to the station, allow at least 4-5 hours between your arrival time and the train's departure.

What to do if you have a long layover (between 6 and 24 hours)

Layover in Chengdu: from the airport to the train station

Start by counting the usable hours, not the gap. Immigration, baggage, getting to the next terminal, and re-check-in typically eat 2–3 hours, so a 6-hour layover is really about 3 hours of freedom. If you're switching airports, subtract another 1–2 hours of transfer.

6–8 hours

  • Changing airports (Shuangliu ⇄ Tianfu): this is your whole window. 80 km, 45–55 minutes by metro, 1–1.5 hours by taxi — go straight across and wait at the next airport.
  • Single airport: stay close. Both airports have lounges and hotels within or beside the terminal; book a few hours to shower and sleep rather than risk a missed flight.
  • Bags: use left luggage at either airport so you're not dragging suitcases into the city.
  • Exception: at Shuangliu, if your bags are checked through and you land off-peak, there's just enough time for one hotpot meal and back.

8–12 hours

  • From Shuangliu: the better airport for a quick city visit — about 40–50 minutes to the centre with one metro transfer. A hotpot dinner plus a walk through Jinli is realistic.
  • From Tianfu: roughly an hour each way into the city, so budget 4–5 usable hours. Pick one district — Kuanzhai Alley for food and atmosphere — and don't attempt two.
  • Timing: aim to be back at the airport 3 hours before an international departure, 2 hours for domestic.

12–24 hours

  • Panda Base early. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding opens around 7:30, and the pandas are genuinely active before 10am — an afternoon visit in summer mostly means sleeping animals.
  • Then hotpot, then a hotel. With this much time, book an airport hotel or one near a metro line rather than trying to sleep in a lounge.
  • Allow for the return leg. From the panda base to Tianfu can take over an hour in traffic; from Shuangliu, about 40 minutes.

Shuangliu (CTU) sits about 16–18 km southwest of downtown, which makes it the far more convenient of Chengdu's two airports — the metro, a shuttle bus and a taxi all get you into the city without the hour-plus slog from Tianfu.

Metro (Line 10)

The cheapest and most predictable option, and the one to default to in daylight hours.

  1. Take Line 10 (blue line) from "Shuangliu Airport Terminal 1" or "Terminal 2" station — both are under the terminals.
  2. Ride to Taipingyuan and transfer to Line 3 or the Line 7 loop, depending on where you're staying.
  3. Get off at Chunxi Road for the city centre, Tianfu Square, or the Jinli/Kuanzhai area with a short walk.
  • Travel time: about 45–55 minutes to the centre, including the transfer
  • Cost: ¥5–6
  • Pros: cheap, no traffic, easy with a light bag
  • Cons: one or two transfers with luggage; last trains run around 23:00, so it's no use on a late arrival

Airport shuttle bus

Several routes run from outside the arrivals hall, with the most useful ones heading toward Chengdu North Railway Station and the city centre.

  • Travel time: 45–60 minutes off-peak, longer in rush hour
  • Cost: about ¥10–15
  • Pros: no transfers, luggage goes underneath, seats are guaranteed
  • Cons: departure times are infrequent and can mean a 20–30 minute wait; the routes don't always match where you're staying

Taxi

  • Travel time: 30–45 minutes off-peak; 60+ minutes between 17:30 and 19:30
  • Cost: about ¥60–100 to the centre
  • Pros: door to door, the only sensible choice after the metro stops
  • Cons: queue at the official rank can be long; unlicensed touts will approach you inside the terminal — ignore them and use the marked taxi line

Ride-hailing

DiDi (accessible in English, and through Alipay or WeChat mini-programs) works at both terminals with a designated pickup zone.

  • Travel time: same as a taxi
  • Cost: roughly ¥50–90, quoted upfront
  • Pros: fixed price before you get in, no cash, no language barrier
  • Cons: you need a working payment method; pickup zones are a few minutes' walk from arrivals and poorly signed

Metro (Line 18, Airport Express)

The dedicated airport line, and the only option that reliably beats traffic.

  1. Take Line 18 from "Tianfu Airport Terminal 1 & 2" station, directly beneath the terminals.
  2. Ride to Chengdu South Railway Station, about 35–45 minutes on the limited-stop express services.
  3. Transfer to Line 1 for Tianfu Square, Chunxi Road and the city centre — another 15–20 minutes.

Some services run through toward the centre, so check the destination board before boarding rather than assuming a transfer is required.

  • Travel time: about 60–75 minutes door to door
  • Cost: ¥8–10
  • Pros: fast and traffic-proof, cheap, step-free access at the airport end
  • Cons: one transfer with luggage; last trains leave around 23:00

Airport shuttle bus

Routes run from outside arrivals toward Chengdu East Railway Station and the city centre.

  • Travel time: 60–90 minutes depending on traffic
  • Cost: about ¥15–25
  • Pros: no transfers, luggage stored underneath
  • Cons: infrequent departures, and the routes only suit a handful of neighbourhoods

High-speed train

A limited number of trains run from the railway station attached to the airport to Chengdu East Railway Station in around 30 minutes.

  • Pros: the fastest option if your hotel is near Chengdu East or you're continuing onward by rail
  • Cons: few departures, and Chengdu East is not the city centre — you'll still need a taxi or metro at the other end

Taxi

  • Travel time: 50–60 minutes off-peak; 90+ minutes in rush hour
  • Cost: about ¥150–200
  • Pros: door to door, the only real option for late arrivals
  • Cons: the most expensive airport run in Chengdu; traffic on the airport expressway is genuinely unpredictable

Ride-hailing

DiDi (English interface, or via Alipay/WeChat) picks up from a designated zone outside arrivals.

  • Travel time: same as a taxi
  • Cost: roughly ¥130–180, quoted before you book
  • Pros: fixed price, no cash, easier if you don't speak Chinese
  • Cons: pickup zone is a walk from the terminal and poorly signed

What you can do during a 6–8 hour layover in Chengdu

Layover in Chengdu: what to do

A classic route that covers the most iconic spots in the heart of Chengdu.

Kuanzhai Alley

What to do: immerse yourself in the atmosphere of old Chengdu. Photograph the traditional Qing Dynasty architecture, browse the souvenir shops, and buy local snacks. Right on Kuanzhai Alley, you can try street food: dan dan noodles, dumplings, and sweet cakes. Or, sit down in one of the little restaurants with a courtyard.

People's Park.

What to do: See the real life of the locals. Watch elderly people dancing, singing karaoke, and playing mahjong.

Have some tea at the tea house located here. It’s a huge, bustling, and incredibly atmospheric open-air tea house. Just grab a table, and they’ll bring you tea and a thermos of boiling water.

Wenshu Monastery

What to do: recharge after the noisy park in the peaceful atmosphere of an ancient Buddhist monastery. Wander through the beautiful pavilions and observe the monks.

Bonus: try vegetarian food at the temple canteen or have some tea in its quiet tea house.

Logistics: all these spots are close to each other in the city center. It's easy to get between them by taxi (a 10-15 minute ride) or on foot (15-25 minutes).

If yours is even longer (for example, 10+ hours), then you can also manage to visit the panda base.
