Chengdu Pandas: Where to See Them, Tickets and Visiting Tips

By James Taylor
October 23, 2026

Chengdu is the place to go in China if you want to see pandas. The city is the capital of Sichuan in south-western China, a region of mountains and forests that has long been associated with pandas. Nowadays, the famous animals are protected and taken care of inside a handful of different parks.
If you want to see pandas in China, the most convenient and best way to do so is with a visit to the Chengdu Panda Base. It’s only 10km away from the city centre of Chengdu, and has plenty to enjoy, from adult pandas working through their bamboo breakfasts to younger pandas tumbling about.

Where to See Pandas in Chengdu and Sichuan
There are five main panda bases to consider in Sichuan, the province surrounding Chengdu. For a first visit, I’d choose Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding because it’s the closest to the city centre and straightforward to reach by taxi or public transport. The other four involve trips to nearby Dujiangyan, the mountains around Wolong, or Ya’an to the southwest.
Panda base | Drive from central Chengdu | How to get there | Where to stay |
Around 30–40 minutes | Taxi or DiDi; alternatively, Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue station, then bus 408 to the South Gate | Chengdu city centre. An easy morning outing without changing hotels.
Around 1–1.5 hours | Train from Chengdu’s Xipu station to Dujiangyan, then a taxi to the base | Chengdu for a day trip, or Dujiangyan to combine pandas with its historic irrigation system and old town.
Around 1–1.5 hours | Train from Xipu to Qingchengshan station, then a taxi to the base | Chengdu for a day trip, or the Mount Qingcheng area for a longer stay with mountain walks and temples.
Around 2 hours | A tour or pre-booked car and driver provides a straightforward return journey into the mountains | Dujiangyan shortens the drive to roughly an hour. Gengda, the town containing the base, is an option for a panda-focused overnight stay.
Around 2–3 hours | Train from Chengdu West to Ya’an, then a taxi to Bifengxia’s visitor centre and the scenic-area shuttle to the panda base | Ya’an or accommodation near Bifengxia for an early visit and time to explore the surrounding gorge. |
As you can see, the Chengdu Panda Base is the most convenient choice for seeing pandas. For the rest of the article, I'll be focusing on the experience and logistics behind visiting there, instead of the other places.

Chengdu Panda Base Tickets
For a regular adult, admission costs RMB55, approximately AU$11.80. Students are cheaper at AU$5.80, while seniors (60 and above) and children (6 and under) are free.
When buying a ticket, you’ll also need to choose between a morning ticket or an afternoon ticket. The morning tickets are for entry between 7:30am and 12:00pm, while the afternoon tickets are from 12:00pm until 5:00pm (time of the last entry, while the park stays open until 6:00pm). Note that from November until February, the hours are slightly reduced; more info on that below.
Reservations open up to 14 days before the visit date and close when the allocation sells out.
You don’t need a Chinese mobile number to book through Trip.com. The panda base lists Trip.com as an authorised booking option for overseas visitors who cannot use its local reservation system. Book using each visitor’s passport details, and make sure that you bring your passports on the day of admission.

This is a MUST do while visiting Chengdu. It was very easy to enter and find. Please keep in mind that there’s a queue to join in order to see the pandas. It took me 45 minutes to see the pandas up close, but definitely worth the wait. Also, please bring walking shoes.

Because it was summer, it was quite difficult to see the pandas since they stay indoors and are usually sleeping. We did see a few, but with the crowds of people near the windows and the speed at which you have to move past, it makes for a somewhat unsatisfying experience.

Chengdu Panda Base Opening Hours
Below are the opening hours for the Chengdu Panda Base:
Season | Morning entry | Afternoon entry | Closing time |
March until October | 7:30am–noon | Noon–5pm | 6pm |
November until February | 8am–noon | Noon–4:30pm | 5:30pm |
When Is the Best Time to See the Pandas?
Spring is the best time to see the pandas, from March onwards. Pandas prefer cooler weather, so later in the year during summer, they’ll mostly stay in their air-conditioned indoor areas. If you are visiting during summer, an early visit gives you a better chance to see them outdoors before the temperatures rise. Spring is also the best time to see younger panda cubs playing outside.
For Australian families, the autumn school holidays are a particularly good fit. The March–April break coincides with spring in Chengdu and offers the chance to see younger pandas becoming more active. Aim for dates outside China’s Qingming holiday in early April, when domestic travel increases. If you’re extending the trip into May, the Labour Day holiday around 1 May brings another busy period.
The September–October school holidays can also work for cooler weather, but they can overlap with National Day Golden Week, beginning on 1 October. For this break, I’d favour a September panda visit outside the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, whose dates change each year.

How to Get to Chengdu Panda Base
The Chengdu Panda Base is around 10km away from the city, so you’ll need to sort out your transport there. There are two separate entrances to Chengdu Panda Base: the South Gate and the West Gate. The metro somewhat serves both, but you’ll need to get a connecting bus to reach the entrance to the park.
By Train and Connecting Bus
To take the metro to Chengdu Panda Base, you’ll want Line 3. There are two different stations depending on which gate you’re going to.
Entrance | Train station | Connecting bus |
South Gate | Panda Avenue (熊猫大道), Exit A | Bus 408 to the South Gate |
West Gate | Junqu General Hospital (军区总医院), Exit B | Bus 409 to the West Gate, about a 10-minute ride |
Despite its name, Panda Avenue station is not at the entrance. The 408 bus completes the journey to the South Gate.

Image sourced from Travel China Guide.
By Taxi or DiDi
From Chunxi Road, you should expect to pay around RMB40 (AU$8.60) for a taxi or DiDi ride to the Panda Base, with the journey taking around 25 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic.
Use the entrance name in your destination:
- South Gate: 成都大熊猫繁育研究基地南门
- West Gate: 成都大熊猫繁育研究基地西门
The South Gate is the useful starting point for the established panda villa area, including No. 6 Villa. The West Gate gives access from the Panda Creek Valley side.
Getting Around Inside the Base
This place is huge, and to walk around the entire base is going to be a lot of walking. Luckily there’s a sightseeing bus that ferries people around inside, with different stops serving different areas such as the panda villas, Sun Nursery, Bamboo Tower, Star Nursery and Panda Creek Valley. It is useful if you want to visit areas on both sides of the grounds.
The sightseeing bus is an extra cost; tickets are approximately AU$6.40 (RMB30) and can be bought on site. At either gate terminus, passengers taking another ride must join the queue again and have their ticket checked.

On the front of Qingcheng Mountain, every stop has a place worth lingering, but they are all temples, each with its own deity. Taking the cable car up and hiking down is tiring, as the cable car only covers a small portion of the mountain. Hiking up is not recommended for those with limited physical fitness. The downhill paths and stairs are narrow and steep, so choose comfortable shoes with good grip. It's beautiful, but comes at a price. Taking the cable car down will also mean missing many places. Choose carefully based on your physical condition.

What to See at Chengdu Panda Base
You’ve purchased your ticket and are set for a half-day trip to see some pandas. Here’s a breakdown of the different areas and what to expect at each.
Giant Pandas in the Villa Areas
The panda villas are where much of the visit happens: watching an adult settle into a pile of bamboo, spotting a panda draped over a climbing structure, or following the movements of a more energetic youngster. The enclosures are spread through landscaped grounds designed to reflect the animals’ forest habitat.
Hua Hua, also known as He Hua, is one of the base’s best-known pandas and is associated with No. 6 Giant Panda Villa. That villa closes to visitors on Mondays, except national public holidays, as part of the base’s rotating rest programme.

Baby Pandas and Nursery Houses
If you’re hoping to see baby pandas at Chengdu Panda Base, the season makes a difference. Births generally occur in summer and autumn. By the following spring, cubs from the previous year may be climbing and playing in outdoor areas.
That makes spring a particularly appealing choice if you’re imagining small, fluffy pandas tumbling around together.
Red Pandas
The base also conserves red pandas, with russet coats and long, ringed tails. In walk-through areas, the base requires visitors to stay at least 3 metres from red pandas and other free-roaming animals.

Panda Conservation Exhibits
The Giant Panda Museum has interactive displays about pandas and conservation, making it a useful stop after spending the cooler part of the morning around the enclosures.
The museum opens Tuesday–Sunday, 9am–5pm, with last admission at 4:30pm. Entry is free for panda base ticket holders, but requires a separate reservation through the museum’s official WeChat account, 成都大熊猫博物馆.

A Suggested Morning at Chengdu Panda Base
For a first visit, here’s how I would plan out a visit. I’d use the South Gate because it’s closer to the established panda areas, and then decide on the day whether to cross to the newer side of the grounds.
- Begin with the panda villas. The major attraction inside the base, and where I would go first. If Hua Hua is a priority, make No. 6 Villa your first destination on a day it opens.
- Continue to the nursery areas. From the panda villas, I’d follow the day’s open viewing routes for young pandas and other residents.
- Visit the red panda area. I’d then make my way to the red panda area, giving me an encounter with these cute furry animals as well.
- Finish with the museum, or extend towards the West Gate. The sightseeing bus serves the Bamboo Tower and Panda Creek Valley if you want to explore farther.
For families, the visitor centres at both gates offer free pram and wheelchair loans, as well as nursing rooms. Both centres also provide free luggage storage, including a staffed service for items too large for the lockers.

Should I Stay Near the Panda Base?
For a first visit to Chengdu, I’d stay in the city centre. The panda base is close enough for a morning outing, leaving you well placed for restaurants, shopping and

An Exceptional Stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu
I had a wonderful stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu, where the service truly went above and beyond my expectations. From the moment I arrived, the hospitality and attention to detail were outstanding.
I was generously upgraded to a Club Suite, which was a lovely surprise. When I was feeling unwell, the team kindly arranged some ice for me, and when I slept in and missed the usual Club breakfast timing, they graciously allowed me to enjoy breakfast even though it normally finishes at 11 am. These thoughtful gestures made such a difference and demonstrated genuine care for their guests.
A very special thank you to Meria Pan, whose hospitality, professionalism, and kindness were exceptional. She made me feel genuinely looked after, and I cannot thank her enough for going the extra mile to ensure my comfort. She is a real credit to the hotel.
Another highlight was the excellent service throughout the property. All the staff I encountered spoke English and were friendly, attentive, and professional, making the entire experience seamless and comfortable.
The buffet at Spices Restaurant was also excellent, with an extensive variety of dishes to choose from, all delicious and beautifully presented.
What sets this hotel apart is not just the beautiful accommodation or excellent dining, but the genuine warmth and willingness of the team to go above and beyond for their guests. Located close to Chunxi Road(5 min walk) and Tianfu Square(10 min walk), exit at Exit E1 or Exit A from Chunxi Metro Station for nearest exit. The lobby is huge and clean, the single room also huge and comfortable. The breakfast variety is good for 4* rated hotel with noodle/salad/pastry station and hot dishes like Thai chicken curry, fried mixed vegetable etc, good breakfast to start the day.
The staffs are helpful but might hv some difficulty to understand some crucial request. I asked for no room clean but need water bottles and ended up getting none. I very like the carpetted room but I found few strains of hair left, the housekeepers could do abit more hard vacuum during cleaning I guess. Others were spotless.

I stayed in an executive twin room on the 19th floor. The hotel is conveniently located right next to Tongzilin subway station, making it easy to get to Yulin and Chunxi Road. The room has been renovated and feels simple yet spacious. The two standard single beds with soft bedding provided ample space for two people. The bathroom features an open-plan shower design, without a bathtub.
Booking an executive room grants exclusive access to the executive lounge, with complimentary buffet breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening happy hour. The lounge was quiet with few people, and offered a good selection of light meals and a hot noodle station. The high-floor, floor-to-ceiling windows offered expansive views of the city's nightscape in the southern part of town. All soft drinks in the in-room mini-bar were complimentary, and a coffee machine was provided, ensuring all essential amenities were available. Service was prompt, and the elevators operated smoothly.
Overall, the location is convenient, and the executive lounge benefits offer great value for money. However, the bathroom setup is quite basic; I wouldn't recommend it for guests looking for a bathtub or high-end toiletries. It's a great choice for business travelers or short trips.FromPKR 20,568

Chunxi Road Commercial Area Chengdu|1.11km from downtown
Every year, I visit Chengdu for a few recuperation trips, and it's always the Grand Hyatt. It feels like visiting old friends… It's been many years, and I've watched the Grand Hyatt grow and improve step by step… Every detail is a testament to the hard work of every Grand Hyatt employee!
This National Day, I stayed at the Grand Hyatt again and clearly felt the changes in team management and the subtle improvement in service. The new employees were humble and enthusiastic, and the experienced staff and management showed great insight and quick, effective problem-solving skills – thumbs up! 👍
**Facilities:** The room was cozy and comfortable. The hotel had installed anti-collision protection on sharp corners in the bathroom, and anti-slip reminders around the bathtub. The peeling paint on the bathroom ceiling was also refreshed, and the room corners were clean, with toiletries replenished promptly.
**Dining:** The executive lounge ambiance was still great; I especially love that touch of Hermès orange… The cakes, pastries, and drinks were unchanged, still of Grand Hyatt quality. However, the orange juice was too diluted. I suspect the Chinese chef in the executive lounge has changed, as the Chinese food has lost its previous Chengdu characteristics, and the quality of the ingredients is significantly worse than before, especially the cold mixed bean curd skin and garlic pork belly, which were particularly salty.
For breakfast, the overall quality and features were maintained. Dandan noodles were still the most popular. However, most of the fruit and vegetable juices were too watered down, affecting the taste and quality. The previous carrot, celery, and bitter gourd juices were replaced by a 'vitality water' that felt cheap. The whole wheat bread was hard and not fresh enough!
**Issues and Suggestions:** When collecting entrusted luggage, it's understandable that a luggage tag is required for security. However, if a guest cannot produce the luggage tag due to special circumstances, there should be alternative ways to verify the owner of the luggage, instead of demanding a photocopy of their ID. Such a non-compliant action could lead to the leakage of guest information and undesirable consequences, for which the hotel would be unable to bear responsibility!
Finally, I'd like to express my gratitude once again to every staff member of the Grand Hyatt Chengdu for their hard work! I hope the Grand Hyatt Chengdu continues to thrive! Looking forward to my next visit! 👏👏👏👍👍👍🍎🍎🍎🌺🌺🌺FromPKR 35,569

This hotel is situated at an excellent location right opposite metro station and near Chunxi Road Pedestrian Street with plenty of restaurants, shops and entertainment options, which makes our travel and stay super easy and convenient. Hotel staff are friendly and willing to help. Hotel restaurant is with nice decorations and mainly serves Chinese style breakfast and cuisines, however, they do have two coffee machines, which is a bonus. We had a pleasant and comfortable stay. While the convenient location and comfortable room were appreciated, it was the genuine warmth, attentiveness and hospitality of the staff that truly made our stay memorable. Thank you for making our visit to Chengdu so enjoyable!
Location: The location is convenient, with around a 15-minute walk to Taikoo Li and IFS. There are also plenty of shops nearby, making it easy to explore the surrounding area.
Room: The room is clean and comfortable, and the bed is soft and cosy, allowing us to have a good rest after a day of sightseeing.
Staff & Service: The staff are attentive, polite and helpful, and they genuinely try their best to accommodate our requests. I would especially like to commend Xiao Mei for her sincere smile and warm service, which made us feel genuinely welcomed.
We also greatly appreciated the hotel’s flexibility in extending our check-out time. This thoughtful arrangement allowed us to leave at a more comfortable pace and head to the airport without feeling rushed, making our departure much more relaxing.
I was also touched by the helpful lady from the laundry room, who greeted us warmly whenever we passed by and was always ready to offer assistance. These small but thoughtful gestures made us feel well cared for throughout our stay.FromPKR 20,444

Convenient location, clean room. I was pleasantly surprised to find a massage mattress in the room. Arriving late for a business trip, I was able to relax with a massage and sleep soundly. Transportation: The hotel is very close to Wenshu Monastery. The white walls, wooden structures, and bluestone courtyards, complemented by bonsai, create a super healing experience when walking on the damp stone paths on a rainy day.
Service: The service was attentive and thoughtful, and the room was clean and comfortable.
Breakfast: Most items were freshly made, not pre-packaged meals, which was very enjoyable.
Regret: Unfortunately, my itinerary was too tight. I returned late in the evening and had to leave for Huanglong early the next morning. I didn't get to fully immerse myself in the slow pace of the courtyard, which is a small regret from this trip. I really liked the environment and the facilities. First off, my room was upgraded from Block D to Block E. While it's a bit further from the Ocean Park, it's still a very short walk. Plus, there's a hotel shuttle that runs between the lobby, Ocean Park, and the rooms, so no matter where you stay, it's perfectly fine. I also chatted with customer service manager Mr. Zhao about a 1-hour late check-out, and that was arranged smoothly. If you're two adults and one child, they offer a complimentary children's breakfast upon check-in, but you'll need to purchase an extra Ocean Park ticket for the child. This time, my kid spent two full days in the water. We checked in at 1:30 PM on the first day, had a quick rest, then changed into swimsuits and headed straight to Ocean Park. We played from 2:30 PM until 7 PM. On the second day, after breakfast, we changed back into our swimsuits and played until 2 PM, then came back, showered, and checked out. I feel like we could have easily stayed another day, as we spent all our time playing in the water and had no time for shopping.FromPKR 23,394

The hotel is a little hard to find the first time, with the elevator tucked in amid an array of food vendors, but when you get up the elevator it’s a pleasant surprise how clean and well decorated it is. I was pretty flustered, having forgotten a wrist-watch in a previous hotel on our tour. I was ready to consider it lost, but their desk-staff 罗婷婷 (LuoTingTing) left me feeling assured that it would arrive in the few days I was visiting Chengdu. She had a very cheerful and calming disposition, which left me feeling like everything would be ok. The whole team at the front made me feel really welcomed, and well looked after, even the cleaning staff were all smiles and pleasant greetings in the mornings. Our room was super comfortable, and we even got a bathtub on the patio! It was right at the metro station, so we could get anywhere in the city pretty conveniently, and all the food options right downstairs were amazing. I would definitely recommend them for your next visit to Chengdu. Oh, and I did get my watch back!FromPKR 8,726

I came to Chengdu for some work, and by the way, I looked at the May Day holiday to bring my children to play. I checked the place in advance, did a lot of strategies, and looked at many hotels. Finally, I chose this one. I didn’t expect it to be quite satisfactory. The hotel room facilities are very smart and convenient to use. The hotel location is also very good. The front desk lady also enthusiastically introduced the nearby snack routes and attractions. There are also small labels, which are very convenient for us to carry. It is a very thoughtful hotel! The design style of the hotel is mainly guitar, which has a holiday style. It feels cozy and comfortable. We both like it very much. We have also booked to bring our children here on May Day.

An amazing, serene, quiet stay like no other.
Don't get me wrong. 4 stars for location only because it is a little remote. It was not easy to geta Didi to go there, and we had a bit of difficulty to book a Didi leaving this beautiful heavenly resort.
We arrived this beautiful homestay quite late, having spent the day in Chengdu. Didi ride was almost an hour+.
Dinner was fabulous - simple, yet complex with mountain mushrooms in a hot pot. Accommodating even though the kitchen was closing due to our time of arrival.
This place certainly did not disappoint. From the quietness of the streams, to the beautiful, tranquil rooms and evoked a sense of harmony and serenity with nature, we felt so at home. We basked in silence of the bamboo that spoke to themselves, and the running waters through the gentle streams.
Both the service staff (names as shown - in Mandarin) were excellent and they always wore smiles as lasting as the QingCheng mountains. Service par excellence - nothing less. Thank you for taking care of us, with sincerity and gentleness as the mountains itself.

A perfect private hot spring guesthouse!
Enjoy bliss in the mountains; the details are simply divine.
This mountain hot spring guesthouse deserves five stars! From the moment I stepped into the courtyard, my positive impression soared—the idyllic mountain setting was incredibly soothing, the air filled with the scent of nature, completely away from the crowds. The private hot spring water was reassuringly clean, and the intelligent temperature control was a thoughtful touch. Soaking in it instantly melted away all my fatigue. In the evening, paired with a home theater, the comfort was simply unparalleled.
The guesthouse's details were even more stunning: the rustic yet exquisite decor created a wonderful atmosphere, the teaware was so delicate I almost didn't want to leave it behind, and afternoon tea with the mountain view was incredibly pleasant; the smart appliances in the bathroom were convenient and high-end, and even the sweet fermented rice balls with brown sugar were incredibly soft and delicious—you could feel the owner's care.
The owner's hospitality and the two adorable dogs were the biggest pluses! Playing with the dogs and taking them for walks felt like being at a friend's house. Ever since I received such warm assistance from the Shangri-La during the pandemic, I've chosen this hotel every time I visit Chengdu. Although the hotel is a bit older, all its facilities are very well-maintained. The gym has a full range of high-quality equipment, and the changing rooms offer both steam and dry saunas, as well as a hot tub, definitely meeting a five-star standard. Towels are always plentiful. Housekeeping is punctual every day, and there's even a turn-down service between 6 and 7 PM. I find the breakfast quite good, with a variety of options including Japanese cuisine. The location is also excellent; for younger, more energetic guests, the Lan Kwai Fong bar street is just 100 meters to the right of the hotel. The location is excellent; you can walk to Hejiang Pavilion and Taikoo Li. The area is lively, yet the hotel itself is very quiet. The executive lounge was closed, but all benefits were moved to the all-day dining on the first floor. Both afternoon tea and happy hour were decent. The minibar and complimentary laundry service were a nice touch. Service was prompt and the staff were friendly.
However, shortly after I booked, the pool was suddenly announced to be closed. When I spoke to the front desk, they said they didn't have the authority to upgrade me to a suite. Upon check-out, they mistakenly charged for the complimentary laundry service. Everyone I encountered in the hotel had a smile on their face. Although some rooms are currently undergoing renovation, you won't feel any inconvenience from the construction. The breakfast is rich and the service is meticulous. Because of my old age and poor eyesight, I couldn't find the toiletries. The W Hotel Chengdu truly stands out among the many luxury hotels in the city. It's young, stylish, trendy, and full of vibrant energy – luxurious without being 'old money,' high-end yet incredibly chic. Every restaurant has its own unique background music, and every staff member radiates a youthful glow.
The breakfast selection is quite rich, featuring handmade Dan Dan noodles and 'chaoshou' (Sichuan wontons), as well as pan-fried buns, all of which are delicious. They offer three different Haagen-Dazs ice cream flavors daily, and the rum raisin and macadamia nut flavors are particularly good. The bread offered at breakfast is also exceptionally tasty, with classics like almond croissants, floss bread, and muffin cupcakes.
