Osaka to Hiroshima: Bullet Train, Costs & Day Trip Tips
Travelling from Osaka to Hiroshima is straightforward enough to fit into a day trip, although there’s plenty to keep you here overnight as well. For most travellers, the most convenient way to get from Osaka to Hiroshima is the Bullet Train from Shin-Osaka Station to Hiroshima Station. The faster bullet trains take around 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. It’s a practical choice, and the one that I took myself when I made the trip. But, the bus is also worth comparing, as is a road trip if you've got more time to play with. Here’s how all the options of getting from Osaka to Hiroshima stack up.

Like I said above, if it were me, I’d be taking the Shinkansen if you’re visiting Hiroshima for the day. Saving a few thousand yen on transport becomes less appealing when it uses up most of your sightseeing time. If I was planning on spending more than a day in Hiroshima, then I’d start to consider the cheaper bus or even turning the whole journey into a multi-day road trip.

Catching the bullet train is the fastest and most convenient way to get from Osaka to Hiroshima.
Which Osaka Station Should You Use?
The departure station is Shin-Osaka (新大阪) and the arrival station is simply Hiroshima (広島). Note that Osaka Station and Shin-Osaka are separate stations; Shin-Osaka is the dedicated terminal for bullet trains.
Nozomi, Mizuho or Sakura Services: Which Should You Choose?
These are the main service names to look for when comparing direct departures:

The different services really don’t change a whole lot; arrival times and prices vary a little bit, but not so much that I’d focus on choosing one service over another.
As long as you’re finding a nice departure and arrival time that works with your plan, go for it. Do make sure to check the duration of the trip, though, as when searching there will be some slower services that show up.
If you’ve already booked a Nationwide JR Pass, you should note that Nozomi and Mizuho services aren’t covered, so you’ll need to book onto the Sakura service. If you’ve got the Kansai & Hiroshima Area Pass, it includes tickets on all three bullet train services.

Osaka to Hiroshima Train Tickets and Rail Passes
If you’re visiting Hiroshima and returning to Osaka within five days, the Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass is worth checking before buying individual tickets. Add an airport transfer or another day trip, and the savings become easier to see.
Return Train Tickets vs the Five-Day Pass
Here’s the comparison for one adult travelling in Ordinary Car, Japan’s standard class:

Against a regular return ticket from Osaka to Hiroshima, the pass can cost as much as ¥5,000 less (around AUD $45). For me, it’s a no-brainer to get it, even if going between Osaka and Hiroshima is the only trip you make.
The only downside is that when you buy a JR Pass, you’ll have to collect it at the station, versus having the tickets on your phone ready to go. A minor inconvenience, not a big one.
What Else Can You Do With the Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass?
The fact that the Kansai-Hiroshima Pass is better value than a return ticket from Osaka to Hiroshima also opens up some other possibilities for your Japan itinerary. Using Osaka as a base, you can do a day trip to Hiroshima, and then squeeze in a few more journeys as well:

We had a bit of trouble figuring out how to activate it (I didn't know if it was only for the green machines, or for all stations—we went to the office specifically, but they sent us to the machine), but we figured it out, and overall, it's convenient. It's great that you can buy in your own currency. The savings compared to paying for each section separately are significant. But you have to calculate it yourself!

I’ve bought 2 JR Pass. One for me, one for my companion. We got the electronic document which we showed in JR office at the airport and the staff provided us with physical JR passes. We did save money thanks to this pass. But you should calculate whether it’s worth the money for you.

This pass and trip was amazing. To be able to do so much with one pass is outstanding. I did the whole circle which took about 5 hours with very little rests. There was so much to see and do there. The only experience I didn’t get to try was the black egg as I had no cash left! Bummed!! A can’t miss experience if you are going to Tokyo!
Regional Pass or Nationwide JR Pass?
The Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass covers a specific part of western Japan. The nationwide Japan Rail Pass covers a much larger rail network, but of course costs a lot more.
A seven-day nationwide Ordinary Pass currently costs around ¥50,000 (roughly AUD $445). For Aussies travelling to Japan, it can be a good choice if you're planning on taking several long-distance journeys across Japan.

Visiting Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka (AKA Japan’s “Golden Triangle”) doesn’t automatically make a nationwide pass worthwhile. For a trip with just one long-distance journey from Tokyo to Kansai, I’d recommend buying that ticket separately and then using the regional pass for the western-Japan portion.
The Kansai–Hiroshima pass does not include the Shinkansen towards Kyoto or Tokyo. Osaka–Kyoto travel is covered on eligible conventional JR trains.

Buying Your Pass and Reserving Seats
You can compare JR Passes on Trip.com, an official partner of JR Pass. After buying the Kansai–Hiroshima pass, you’ll need to pick up your Pass in Japan, and then use the JR ticket machines or ticket offices to reserve your seats on the train.
Bringing Luggage on the Shinkansen
Measure your suitcase’s length + width + height, including wheels and handles:
- 160 cm or less: No oversized-baggage reservation is required.
- More than 160 cm and up to 250 cm: Reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.
- More than 250 cm: The bag cannot be brought aboard.
Reserving an oversized baggage area adds nothing to the normal reserved-seat price. Pass holders should request this seat type when making their reservation.
For a day trip, I’d leave the main suitcase at your Osaka accommodation if possible. A small bag is much easier to manage while exploring Hiroshima.
Osaka to Hiroshima by Bus
So far we’ve talked a lot about the train, but if you’re planning on spending a few nights in Hiroshima, the bus might make some sense. It’s cheaper than the train, so you can put some of those savings towards your accommodation or food.
In Osaka, buses depart from the Osaka Station JR Expressway Bus Terminal. Some other bus operators might use their own stop, so if booking a bus, check the booking confirmation.
Is the cheaper cost worth the extra time it takes? That’s up to you. I will say that riding the bullet trains in Japan is an experience in itself, so for me, I don’t think the slightly cheaper journey time is worth it, but you might feel differently.
There is also the option to do a day tour from Osaka to Hiroshima on the bus. A long day, but hitting all the highlights.
Osaka to Hiroshima by Rental Car: Make It a Road Trip
Aussies do love a good road trip, and if you’ve got some time on your hands, you might be considering renting a car in Osaka and driving the distance to Hiroshima. It’s roughly 330 km, around four to five hours total if you were to drive directly between the two cities on the main highway.
But what’s a road trip without some good sightseeing? The easiest option is to split the journey into two days, giving you time to stop and explore some other things. One potential route is Osaka → Himeji → Kurashiki → Hiroshima, letting you visit Himeji Castle, then spending a night in Kurashiki, known for its willow-lined canals that run past white-walled former storehouses.
The one thing to think about is whether you’ll return your car to Osaka, or pay the one-way drop-off fee for leaving your car in Hiroshima. It can add a substantial amount to the total cost.
My pick: choose a car when you want several stops or countryside detours. For a straightforward Hiroshima city visit, the Shinkansen remains the easier option.

Can You Do a Day Trip to Hiroshima from Osaka?
Yes. A day trip works well by Shinkansen, especially if you concentrate on Hiroshima city. Leave Osaka early, have your return ticket already booked, and carve out plenty of time for the Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima.

The Peace Memorial Park and Museum are the big stops of a day trip in Hiroshima, and I’d recommend allowing two to three hours to do them together. The museum deals with the bombing through personal stories and belongings, so it deserves time and your full attention.
For lunch, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is an easy choice. Cabbage, noodles and other ingredients are built up in layers on a hot griddle, then finished with sauce. Find a counter seat if you’d like to watch it being made; Okonomimura is one place to browse several restaurants together.

Can You Include Miyajima Too?
You can, but plan for a much fuller day. Miyajima requires another journey after reaching Hiroshima: a JR train to Miyajimaguchi, a short walk and a ferry crossing.
If both places are priorities, take an early Shinkansen and keep the itinerary focused on the Peace Memorial Park area and Miyajima’s waterfront and shrine. I’d also recommend going straight to Miyajima, then returning to Hiroshima from there to spend the afternoon at the Peace Memorial Park.
My preference would always be to spend one night in Hiroshima if you want to explore both places properly. But I also understand that not everyone has so much time to spare; if you want to go for it, it is possible.
Getting Around After Arriving in Hiroshima
On the train, you’ll be arriving at Hiroshima Station, but you’ll need onward transport for the Peace Memorial Park or Miyajima.

Initially i wanted to book a hotel somewhere in the downtown. But the breakfast and the dinner here caught my eyes. Also the view of the inland islands.
I stayed 2 nights here, I came from Fukuoka where my plane landed. The taxi fare from hiroshima station to the hotel is about 3000-3500 yen.
There is free hotel shuttle bus but i did not take it. Also, there is public bus stopping right outside the hotel (which i found out later).
Though the hotel is old, it is well kept and clean.
The staff were very eager to assist the guests and there is always a smile on the face.
I was given the 17th floor facing east. But the morning sun was too bright. Though it didnt matter much to me.
Another reason i booked this hotel is they have speed boat counter for Miyajima island. I booked one way there as I have the JR pass for return and I have plans after.
One way ticket from hotel to Miyajima is 2400 yen and return is 4500 yen.
There is a convenience store in the hotel.
But I believe they closes at 2200.
Also, there is hot spring in the hotel.
There is a usage charge for it, but i do not recall the price as i did not use.
I went up to the bar on the 1st night. The view was great. Most importantly the price are reasonable too.
For both days, i ate at the chinese restaurant for breakfast.
1st day was Japanese breakfast set.
2nd day was Japanese buffet style breakfast.
They were delicious.
The western and Japanese buffet breakfast at the top floor were very crowded. But they had more selections.
For my return trip to Beppu, I used the concierge (bell desk) to send my big luggage to Fukuoka. The price was okay.
I took the hotel shuttle bus go Hiroshima station. It was a pleasant ride.
Do take note it is first come first serve and there’s a queue.
I will stay here again, should I come back to Hiroshima.

The hotel's location is excellent. From the second floor of JR Hiroshima Station, you can follow the skywalk across the street, and it's right next to Hiroshima TV. Having a 7-Eleven downstairs is also very convenient. The hotel's cleanliness and facilities are great, and the rooms are a bit larger than typical Japanese hotels. Breakfast is on the 20th floor with panoramic views, including the station. The variety is quite rich, and they even have Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. The only thing I hope they can improve is the towel-only replacement service. Amazing location and excellent price in the heart of Hiroshima. The onsen is amazing and the hotel also provides noodles between 21:30 to 23:00, ice cream after spa and probiotics. Good, there is a JR pass-covered sightseeing circular bus from Hakata station stops near the hotel! The room is new and neat. Common zone down on 1/F is actually a small-scale cafe. Free amenity kits and towel. Free to leave bags in self-serviced cloak room with bicycle lock provided. Many restaurants, DONKI and PARCO shopping mall in walking distance. This private room is competitive to a conventional hotel, I hope they can keep this price.FromSAR 62

This is a newly opened hotel in Hiroshima. The room has a microwave and washing machine, but no kitchenware. The room is also relatively small but very clean, and the soundproofing is quite good, so I slept very well every night. Breakfast is just simple bread; if there's a big price difference in your booking, I wouldn't recommend buying it. Additionally, from 10 AM to 10 PM, there's a simple drink bar with dried fruits that you can enjoy there, but you can't take them back to your room, which is a bit of a shame. Also, toothbrushes are only provided once! In the room, the lobby amenities only include cotton swabs, combs, and razors, no skincare products.FromSAR 502

My stay at this hotel was quite good overall. The location is decent – it's about a 10-minute walk with luggage from Hiroshima Station if you cross the bridge from the Fukuya side and turn left. There's a FamilyMart convenience store about 20 meters in front of the hotel, and Shukkei-en Garden is super close, roughly a 7-8 minute walk away. Most of the city's shopping areas (Kamiya-cho, Hon-dori shopping street, Hiroshima Castle, Peace Memorial Park, etc.) and major department stores are all within a 20-30 minute walk, so nothing is too far.
The hotel lobby on the first floor is staffed 24 hours a day, and the cleaning staff tidies up daily. The breakfast selection is also quite varied, and you don't have to wait long for the elevators.
There are plenty of dining options nearby as well. All in all, it was a good experience! I'd consider staying here again on my next trip to Hiroshima.FromSAR 297

I owe a lot to this place where I stayed for 7 days. There was staff who could speak Korean, and all the staff basically spoke English. The room cleaning was neat, so I had no discomfort during my stay, and checking out was also easy, which was great. It's a bit disappointing that there weren't more washing machines, but it was good that if I told the front desk, they would temporarily store finished laundry and let me use the washing machine.FromSAR 374

Hotel is very near the Peace Memorial Park and only steps away from Chuden-mae streetcar stop. It is also within walking distance of the highway bus station at Sogo department store. My room faces the streetcar stop and is just of perfect size to me. The bathroom is a tad small but hey, this is Japan after all where space is a premium. I didn’t add on breakfast. The hotel provides tea and coffee at the lobby (from 06:00 to midnight) and also offers complimentary nightwear and free rental of pillow. The furniture is a bit dated but still functional. I have no complaints at all and would highly recommend especially to solo travellers. And the hotel personnel were so kind and helpful and helped guide me on the streetcars to take to Miyajima and they also sold me the day-ticket. I was able to leave my bags at the lobby before and after checking in and out respectively. To be honest, I’d prepared myself for the worst after reading some reviews but I had a great stay. Pleasant hotel which is currently being refurbished. Everything works well and the shower is excellent. A few areas of my room were a little tired. Even so, the bed was excellent and very comfortable. Aircon was not adjustable for temperature but only low, middle and high.FromSAR 204

Great value if you need to live near Hiroshima Station, since it is only a very short walk from the station.
The room is perfectly fine for one person, the toilet is a bit small but usable.
The station nearby has plenty of restaurants to eat at, though not many places for breakfast. You can eat at the hotel, but the hotel only sells one type of onigiri set for breakfast.
The biggest downside is that the hotel is very close to the Shinkansen tracks, which makes a lot of noise. You will need earplugs if you cannot stand the noise (if you want to sleep early, or if you want to wake up late).FromSAR 140

Very easy to find as it is a 5 minute walk from the train station and the Street Cars to take you down town. Also very close to a 7/11 and some great street food and small restaurants as you walk to the hotel. The staff were super friendly and stored my bags as I went out to explore. The baseball stadium is about 400 metres away and the street cars take you all the way to Hiroshima Peace Park. The rooms were excellent and quiet, especially with the railway pretty much right next door. Didn't hear a thing. I love the older stylist decor on the 2nd floor. I see people complain that there isn't a lift from the ground ( or level 1 they call it) but Im sure the staff will help if you have packed half your house to bring on the trip with you. My 4kg back pack was no problem. Hiroshima is a fantastic place. What the US did to this city and its people is disgraceful.FromSAR 178

The location of this hotel is excellent. It’s right next to Peace Memorial Park, directly behind the museum, in a quiet and pleasant area. It’s about a 3–5 minute walk from the tram stop and around 5 minutes to the main shopping street. If you get this hotel at a good price and only plan a short stay focused on the Peace Park, the location is definitely a plus.
The room itself, however, was extremely small. Seating was uncomfortable — only a small stool with no back, and in my case the screws were sticking out, making it unsafe and unpleasant to use. You are basically either on the bed or out of the room.
The biggest issue was severe condensation and dampness. The room had extreme moisture problems — water running down the walls and windows, and the bed and floor becoming damp overnight. I woke up with wet feet and later realised why. This is not normal condensation; it was excessive and clearly an ongoing issue. I raised this with the front desk when checking out, but it was brushed off. After contacting Trip.com with photos and videos, the hotel refused responsibility once I had checked out. Trip.com eventually offered partial compensation, but the hotel itself showed no accountability.
Because of this, I would not stay here again. I am not overly picky with hotels, but a damp room that can make guests sick is unacceptable.
Also, I do not recommend the breakfast. You receive a very small bento box with unclear contents and a bottled tea. For the price, you are far better off going to a nearby convenience store like Lawson.
Overall: great location, but poor room conditions and lack of responsibility from the hotel. There are better options in this area.FromSAR 115

Good hotel good hotel network. A little far from the main center. You have to go through the entertainment area (it can be bypassed on the more pleasant World Boulevard). Breakfast is full from the morning. Coffee tea only at morning hours from 6 to 10 (which is strange, it was possible to drink tea at any time). Breakfast is always crowded. The room is typical for the network. Default cleaning: you need to put the garbage and towels - everything will be replaced. Cheap washing in the hotel: 200 yen per washing, 100 yen - a half-hour dry. Supermarket, bus stop nearby. There were nice views from the window.FromSAR 164

I stayed here while checking out the newly renovated Hiroshima Station. I was really impressed by how helpful and clear the front desk staff was, and how clean everything looked.
Check-in is done via a machine, which then dispenses your room key. Similarly, for check-out, you insert your room key into the machine for collection. To operate the elevator, you hold your card key up to the touch panel in the middle and then press your floor button. I noticed the elevators seemed to go up and down faster than in typical hotels. To open your room door, you hold your card key near the doorknob.
The room itself was very clean. The step into the bathroom was very small, which is great for elderly guests. I was surprised when water started flowing from the ceiling during the shower! It's a minor point, but I was a bit disappointed that the showerhead didn't have a stop button.
The breakfast buffet offered standard dishes, but I really enjoyed the Hiroshima greens – it brought back a lot of good memories and tasted delicious.
Room wear (pajamas) and tea are available on the first floor, so remember to grab them before heading up to your room.
The only downside was the check-in time. I arrived 30 minutes early at 2:30 PM, and after parking my car, I was charged an extra 100 yen, bringing the total to 1100 yen.
The location is excellent, about 800m from Hiroshima Station and 300m from the stadium, making it perfect for staying if you're attending a Carp game. There's also a Lawson nearby that sells Carp merchandise.
Overall, I had a comfortable stay and I'm glad I chose Toyoko Inn Stadium Mae. I'd definitely like to stay here again if I have the chance.FromSAR 159
