The Pilsley Inn - Chatsworth

The Pilsley Inn - Chatsworth

"Stopped in for a drink at this pub during a walk through the beautiful Peak District, expecting something a little more refined and inclusive, especially as it’s owned by Chatsworth House, which frankly should know better. Unfortunately, what we encountered was an appalling excuse for a menu—particularly if you’re vegetarian. It's 2025, not 1970. How on earth is there still no vegetarian Sunday roast option? How difficult is it to throw together some well-roasted seasonal veg and a Yorkshire pudding? Or how about a nut roast or a vegetable Wellington—options that are now standard in many pubs that actually bother to cater for more than just meat-eaters? Instead, we were offered the lazy, uninspired fallback that so many places cling to when they’ve given zero thought to vegetarians: risotto and oyster mushrooms. Bland, tasteless, and utterly unoriginal. It’s like they Googled “vegetarian dish” and picked the first thing that came up. No effort, no flavour, no excuse. Given the stature of the estate that owns this pub, the menu should reflect not just quality, but a sense of progress and inclusivity. Vegetarianism isn’t a niche lifestyle anymore—it’s mainstream, and to ignore that in 2025 is not just lazy, it’s disgraceful. It’s a total failure to keep up with the times. Vegetarianism isn’t a rarity—it’s a huge and growing demographic. To ignore that, especially at a high-profile, estate-owned venue, is nothing short of embarrassing. Your menu is eye-wateringly expensive, yet somehow manages to offer far less than other pubs in the area. Many nearby establishments provide broader, better-thought-out menus with excellent vegetarian and vegan options—and at a lower price. You might want to take a leaf out of the Cheshire Cheese pub in Hope, where they’ve gone the extra mile with a separate menu dedicated to vegans. That’s the level of care and consideration diners should be able to expect in 2025."

Castle Inn by Greene King Inns

"Friendly staff, decent food in the pub, well cooked and reasonably priced. We stayed for one night in the Hathersage room, this room opens directly onto the outside seating area, this is adjacent to the pavement and busy roadway. Room was ok, bed comfortable, bathroom clean with good shower, stone floor, no rug so cold walking around. It’s worth noting that there is a lot of noise from passing traffic, which did quieten down through the night but started picking up again around 5.30 a.m. Also I imagine in summer the pub patrons using the outside tables could be a disturbance if you wanted an early night."

"We stayed for 3 nights in the 3 bedroom apartment. Great communication prior to arrival. We messaged on route to say we would be a little early checking in and it was not a problem. The apartment was very spacious. Living area downstairs and the bedrooms upstairs. Everywhere is immaculatly clean and accesable. Our father is a sprightly 95 year old but easily made the stairs to the bedroom. there is a downstairs toilet as well as three ensuite bathrooms upstairs.Messaged Richard to get the WiFi code and the WiFi worked very well. The cattle market acroos the road provides an amazing full English breakfast on a Monday and maybe other days during high season ( we stayed in March ). Kitchen fully equiped with plenty of cups, glasses, plates and silverware with a dishwasher to do all the dirty work. The apartment is toasty warm with water underfloor heating throughout. The only thing we did not like was having to leave.!!"

The Rutland Arms Hotel, Bakewell, Derbyshire ★★★★
"Location is quite remote, paid GBP 233 for a simple room, no air con, only a mini fan, force to open window, located at ground floor, easy to climb in, didn’t have peaceful sleep. Breakfast ended 9:30am"

The Pilsley Inn - Chatsworth ★★★★
"All the staff were lovely and more than helpful, the room was so clean and had little touches that made it feel special; tea's and coffee's biscuits. The breakfast that was included in the price was brilliant as well"

Castle Inn by Greene King Inns ★★★
"Staff were very pleasant and room clean and warm, however the room opened up onto the pavement. If we opened the door you could knock someone walking along. The room was also right next to the car park, great for dropping bags off. The blind for the window was not sufficient for the street light and kept us awake alongside the noise. Rooms are available above and are more part of the Inn. I would suggest asking for one of these if staying."
