Hotel Richard Löwenherz ★★★★

📍 Dürnstein 8, Durnstein

"A wonderful hotel in an interesting and beautiful region. Peaceful, but with many things to do, particularly if you like to explore, either by walking, biking or hiking. Enjoy history, good wines, beautiful vineyards and forests, a challenging and scenic sculpture hike. The Richard Lowenherz is a piece of art & history itself. Amazing antiques and artwork, a historic landmark, in the center of a quaint village on the banks of the Danube. Wonderful staff, too."

"No shower curtain, wash cloths, towel bar, soap or shampoo. Only 2 coffee pods. No laundry facilities despite advertising. No fan or air conditioning. Scene out the window was a rooftop. Would not return for the price. "

"I beautiful hotel on the Danube in Duernstein Austria. A beautiful place to stay for a few nights to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. The town is very compact one street with many shops and a few restaurants. It becomes very crowded when a river cruise boat stops. The breakfast room was wonderful and the Hostess was the best! The staff was wonderful and Maria and her husband the owners of the hotel could not have been nicer. She was always at the front desk during the day to help with any problems or advise us on things to see. The elevator is a little small and difficult at times to get on during the evening just before dinner"

"Not a good hotel. The rooms are very dated, with furniture and fittings that look like they haven’t been updated in decades. Most things are either broken, worn out, or barely functional. There is no air conditioning, which made the stay very uncomfortable. The rooms are consistently 5–10 degrees warmer than outside, and the old, drab furniture just adds to the stuffy, claustrophobic feeling. As the other reviews have said, the hotel is basically half of a building site. Construction starts early in the morning and is extremely noisy, which completely ruins any chance of rest or relaxation. The location is also poor. It’s right on a main road, so there is constant traffic noise, day and night. To make things worse, the only way into town is via a narrow, dark road that takes about 20 minutes to walk. Not convenient at all. Service was very mixed. A few members of staff were polite and helpful, but others were shockingly rude. At times, staff were openly disrespecting each other in front of guests, which made for an awkward and unprofessional atmosphere. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Outdated, uncomfortable, badly located, noisy, and with inconsistent service."

"The Rothenhof 1 apartment has several defects. There's an unpleasant musty smell on the lower floor, the plaster in the bathroom is crumbling, and there's mold on some of the walls, the ceiling vent is hanging down, salt has been spread on the windows and floor for pest control, an unused high chair is left lying around, and the bottles in the wine cellar are completely covered in dust. Far too expensive; I wouldn't book this apartment again!"

Hotel Schloss Dürnstein ★★★★★
"I felt immediately at home as soon as I checked in. My 10-night of delightful stay over Easter 2025 ended just too quickly! A most sophisticated destination with its superb period decor, elegance, charm, ambience, location, service, staff and most importantly, great food, especially since opportunities for dining out in that small area is very limited and April nights are too cold to go out! The castle hotel and its imp[ressive wine cellar are owned and operated by the Thiery family and they are seen on the property each day tending to just about everything: from check-in desk to restaurant service and even including arranging the fresh hand-cut flowers adorning tables in each common area of the vast property. Their personal touch could be felt and was certainly appreciated. The impeccably well-mannered and well-groomed staff, coming from a diverse number of countries is rare in the region. Their ability to strike up a conversation in different languages besides just German and English is refreshing and counts as an additional credit for this hotel's image. Spanish, for example, is rarely heard amongst staff of hotels in Austria, much less in tiny Duernstein. I am a serious Foodie and without hesitation I say, indeed, meal times were always a high plus on my score sheet of experience at Hotel Schloss Duernstein. Everyday I looked forward just to waking up for my food times! With a diverse menu at both breakfast and dinner, one never gets bored. The presentation is always superb, the dining areas sophisticatedly elegant, making everyday and brand new delightful experience. My dinnertime favourite remained the extremely tasty starter: marinated asparagus tips and fried shrimps! The marinated swordfish comes very close too! The main course offers as vast and as gastronomically delightful!"

Gartenhotel & Weingut Pfeffel Dürnstein ★★★★
"Beautiful hotel with spacious and tastefully decorated spaces and rooms. Rooftop wellness area with a relaxing view. New construction activity was not perceived as disturbing. The location at the foot of the vineyards means it's directly on the Krems-Melk road with corresponding traffic, separated only by a quiet railway embankment. Rooms without air conditioning mean open windows with street noise. Rooms above the smoking terrace are not recommended. The service is supposed to be over after 10:00 PM – no one cares. Breakfast really had an above-average and good selection. Dinner: Disappointing, because the salmon tartar starter was more of an attempt but not well-executed, i.e., without seasoning, and the main course had a wait of an hour. Explanation: Communication was broken! The restaurant was visited by a group and a few couples. This wasn't Austria. We dined at the Schlosshotel for the next few days with excellent service and imaginative cuisine. Nevertheless, a beautiful hotel with potential for improvement, with appropriate management. The staff, by the way, was exceptionally polite, except for one senior who shuffled around without greeting."
