"Spacious, clean, grand hotel on the shore of the Danube. We opted for a room with a view of the river and are quite glad we did. Our room was spacious with good lighting and nice water pressure. The beds were a bit more firm than we like, but we couldn't call them "uncomfortable" as that can be very subjective. As with many hotels in Europe, there is no air conditioning. However, thanks to the thick stone walls, you can get by with a fan if use your shades and shutters wisely on hot days. Breakfast was one of the best, with hot food (bacon, scrambled eggs, sausage), fresh fruit, yogurts, meat, cheese, pastries and more, served in bright, spacious dining rooms. The town of Dürnstein itself is small and can be quite full of tourists during the day. That there is plenty of free parking at the hotel is a wonderful benefit. Because it is located in a small town, there is a handful of restaurants and bars, if you don't want to eat at the hotel's restaurant. This was an excellent base from which we explored the Wachau valley."

"No shower curtain, wash cloths, towel bar, soap or shampoo. Only 2 coffee pods. No laundry facilities despite advertising. No fan or air conditioning. Scene out the window was a rooftop. Would not return for the price. "

"The rooms for the price of 300€ are absolutely insufficient (small and shabby) plus the management is pretty unfriendly and arrogant. Maybe like for 150€/night would be ok but the hotel definitely isn’t worth the price they charge. Definitely cannot recommend this place!"

"The Rothenhof 1 apartment has several defects. There's an unpleasant musty smell on the lower floor, the plaster in the bathroom is crumbling, and there's mold on some of the walls, the ceiling vent is hanging down, salt has been spread on the windows and floor for pest control, an unused high chair is left lying around, and the bottles in the wine cellar are completely covered in dust. Far too expensive; I wouldn't book this apartment again!"

"Thanks to the heating being turned up full blast, it was unbearably hot when we entered the room, so we quickly opened the windows and went for an evening stroll. Upon our return, we were met with an unpleasant surprise: something was making an unbearably loud droning noise in the courtyard; sleeping with the windows open was out of the question. The receptionist was quite taken aback by the noise: "That can't possibly be coming from us." A quick call to the manager: "No, there are no rooms available in your category." Both statements were blatant lies! There were plenty of rooms available on the castle side, and the droning, as we discovered the next morning, was coming from the restaurant's ventilation system; it stopped every evening at 10:00 PM and started again around 7:00 AM when they started preparing breakfast. Clearly, with the weekly special (stay 3 - pay for 2), we only got the cheapest rooms and weren't exactly taken seriously. Breakfast was above average, dinner was okay, but the rooms were a bit small for the price (it was still a lot of money)."

"Not a good hotel. The rooms are very dated, with furniture and fittings that look like they haven’t been updated in decades. Most things are either broken, worn out, or barely functional. There is no air conditioning, which made the stay very uncomfortable. The rooms are consistently 5–10 degrees warmer than outside, and the old, drab furniture just adds to the stuffy, claustrophobic feeling. As the other reviews have said, the hotel is basically half of a building site. Construction starts early in the morning and is extremely noisy, which completely ruins any chance of rest or relaxation. The location is also poor. It’s right on a main road, so there is constant traffic noise, day and night. To make things worse, the only way into town is via a narrow, dark road that takes about 20 minutes to walk. Not convenient at all. Service was very mixed. A few members of staff were polite and helpful, but others were shockingly rude. At times, staff were openly disrespecting each other in front of guests, which made for an awkward and unprofessional atmosphere. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Outdated, uncomfortable, badly located, noisy, and with inconsistent service."
