Radha Cottage ★★
"Radha's Cottage is a lovely retreat, very well located at the end of the road in Matheran. It's a simple place, furnished largely with period furniture. The food is outstanding - the best I've had in 6 weeks of traveling in India. For those who are unfamiliar with Matheran as I was, a couple pieces of information: - The "toy train" runs very infrequently. Be sure to get a schedule if you plan to take it from the parking. - It's a 4.5km walk from the train station near the parking to Radha's. Don't believe the stationmaster if he tells you it's a 20 minute walk, it's an hour's walk. - It's still another 1.5km from the train station in the village to Radha's. If you've got a bag it's probably a good idea to get some help from a porter. - Sometimes the electricity goes out. When we stayed, these outages were brief, just a minute or 2. - Sometimes the water in the bathroom is dark brown. This surprised us one morning. It's dirt, and cleared during the course of the day."

Dune Barr House - Verandah in the Forest ★★★
"My husband and I really needed to get away from city life and noise and reconnect with nature. Dune Barr house affords this experience like no other property we have visited. Enveloped in a quiet part of the Matheran forest, all you hear is the beautiful sounds of chirping birds and giant malabar squirrels. As for the property itself, the grand old lady of the forest stands with a beautiful long balcony, an enchanting outdoor and indoor dining space (indoor candlelight dinners were especially special in the dining room), a living room with games, and plenty of pathways to walk around close by to visit several points. Sitting in these rooms takes you back to a by-gone era as you are surrounded with antique furniture, paintings and crockery. But what makes the experience at Dune Barr House - Verandah in the Forest something truly spectacular is the excellent and attentive staff and amazing chefs. Right from property manager Mr. Ratneesh and his staff Shyam and Narayan who catered to our every request, to the impeccable food that came out of the kitchens, right from Indian to continental to quintessential Parsi cuisine, very meal was spectacular and every experience one to be remembered. We especially loved their homemade ice creams, fresh homemade curd and parathas, and pretty much every dish they churned out. Chicken pesto, chicken rosemary continental plates were excellent quantity and each portion was enough for two people. Their soups were also excellent. Dal and Palak Paneer were out of this world. This is a holiday we needed and will cherish always. Can’t wait to visit again soon. Loved our room on the balcony - the Petit room! Thanks to everyone who made our stay so very special."
