This is a fabulous place for an authentic Japanese holiday. The location is beautiful. The outdoor hot spring bathing area is clean and looks like a movie set. The included meals are generous in portion size and are delicious. Our room overlooked the river and it was great. Tatami floors and shoji screen windows. This is an old and historic place and does not cater to western norms. You sleep on futons on the floor. Only Japanese food is available. But it is a wonderful place to spend some time.

The location and view are stunning. The service and foods are very good. The room is kind of smelly. I think they put us in smoking room while we asked for non smoking.

The grounds are spacious and very beautiful. Even though I was traveling alone with my two-year-old daughter, I had a corner room in the old building that was huge (easily big enough for 8 people) and absolutely lovely. The lack of a shower in the room is something to get used to. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Overall, the hotel and the onsen are unfortunately quite dated and could use a renovation. The outdoor pools, the plentiful food, the free shuttle to the train station, and the large room somewhat compensated for this. However, the value for money wasn't quite right due to the dated facilities.

Great onsen with shared baths, allowing couples and families to enjoy the hot springs together. Dinner and breakfast are simply amazing! Before you have time to finish one dish, they are already bringing you another. The staff is extremely polite and ready to solve any problem! The downside is the remote loc nuation, but there is a shuttle to the onsen. Also, we did not have amenities in our room, only on the floor, but this is special about our building.

This was our first trip to Japan and our very first ryokan experience, and we absolutely loved it! My husband and I were completely captivated by the atmosphere, the beautiful natural surroundings, the yukata, the exquisite kaiseki dinner, and of course, the relaxing hot springs. We spent two wonderful and incredibly relaxing days there.
A small tip: I recommend bringing some snacks or familiar food with you, as the ryokan cuisine might not be to everyone's taste.

A nice place to get away from the city. Room is spacious and relaxing with a nice view of the forested scenery and rushing sound of the river. The outdoor onsen is refreshing after few hours of travel. Foods are reasonably good and most important is the friendly staff which make one feel at home.

Very good experience staying here for a night. The weather was very cold. The onsen is located in a very prime location.

temperature of water in outdoor zone is just too warm, (not feeling any hot), indoor bath is small and old but temperature is ok. shower room is also too small and toilet flushing is not good. One of guest get allergic to some foods, inform ryokan in advance and they also put paper on the table about allergic food. however food served on dishes still have allergic ingredients. definitely wont come again.

The outdoors onsen is excellent, breakfast and dinner is great. The room is Japanese style big room but no private baht in the room only toilet but it is okay as we intend to bath at the outdoors onsen anyway.

Great hotel! Located in the mountains, it stands literally on a mountain river, the views are amazing. The room we stayed in was in a traditional Japanese style with sliding doors, tatami mats and mattresses for sleeping on them (which were made up for us while we were at dinner). There was one toilet for several rooms, which did not interfere in any way, the shower was located to the side. The hotel also provided a traditional dinner and breakfast. The hotel has several onsen rooms with different water temperatures, shared or separate for women.

Takaragawa Onsen exceeded all expectations. Upon arriving at Jomokogen station, a friendly driver meets you with a sign and drives you comfortably for 25 km. You need to register in advance by sending an email to the hotel. Upon entering, you immediately feel transported to the past: you leave your shoes, choose a yukata robe with an obi, receive socks and special bathing attire, and proceed to your room in a traditional Japanese style (I highly recommend this to fully experience the atmosphere of the place).
When you enter the room, you will likely experience a shock, as it feels like you've stepped into an old movie. I recommend a room with a small balcony in the Main building overlooking the river. Check-in is around 3 PM. You can change and head straight to the hot springs. Yes, everyone has been to saunas, steam rooms, and hammams, but the onsen is unlike anything else. It's impossible to convey the emotions. The combination of hot, clear water, pure air, surrounding nature, the rushing river, the play of light on the leaves, the scents, and the silence offers something new and unique.
There are three public baths on the premises and one exclusively for women. After bathing, head to the restaurant for dinner, featuring local dishes. I recommend ordering both dinner and breakfast in advance. The food is very delicious and unique. You will sleep on futons, which will be carefully laid out for you while you have dinner. It’s a wonderful experience, and you'll sleep as lightly as a child. I would love to return here to experience that happiness again. One day was not enough.
