Kaiping Diaolou
Kaiping Diaolou is a building left by overseas Chinese in the 1920s and 1930s. It combines living and defensive functions and is a precious world heritage.
The main features of Kaiping Diaolou include:

- Combination of local and Western: After two anti-bandit operations, the Kaiping area has been relatively stable, and the appearance of cottage-style buildings is also a combination of local and Western.

Kaiping is nicknamed 'the home of overseas Chinese' as huge numbers of emigrants left this area beginning in the late nineteenth century. Many settled abroad and Taishanese, the local language, is still spoken around the world. Others returned home with both wealth and inspiration. They imported what were then new western inventions like flush toilets and radios and built houses in their home villages inspired by the architecture they'd seen in Europe and the Americas.
The most distinctive of their buildings are diaolou, fortified towers crowned with ostentatious baroque or neoclassical penthouses. They served both as residences and defence against bandits. They can be found in various places, but especially in Kaiping, where they are recognised as a Unesco world heritage site. Many are scattered singly or in pairs throughout the countryside but there are a few diaolou clusters where you can see many in a small area and even climb up a few of them, as well as seeing the Republic of China period furnishings inside. The surroundings are very rural, not much changed a century after these eccentric towers were raised.
Kaiping is an easy day- or weekend-trip from Guangzhou. From Kaiping Railway Station it's easiest to get a taxi to one of the diaolou clusters.
Be sure to taste the local speciality baozaifan, rice cooked in a clay pot until the bottom gets crusty, served with various toppings.

To introduce amazing Dialou scattered in villages around Kaiping city is my pleasure! This miracle you can face in Guangdong countryside.

The creations merged European, greec, Indian and Middle East styles.
Than higher building is, than more rich the owner was.

Kaiping, dialou, Guangdong province. Well, the city Kaiping is very famous due to villages around where tourists can observe the specific buildings named Dialou. The key feature if this creations is mixed architectural style.
Exactly right here the pictures from San Men Li Willard are presented. This is very small village and there is no admission tickets. No one is taking good care about this area so some buildings look very old or partially destroyed. That was a great experience to visit such place. This is real Guangdong coytriside.
P.S. : there are several villages around Kaiping city with unique legacy.

In the vast fields of Kaiping, Guangdong, there are 1,833 towers scattered in large and small. The small European-style buildings are intertwined with traditional earthen houses in rural South China, creating a unique rural scene. Although Kaiping Diaolou has only a history of more than 100 years, it has witnessed the indomitable and vicissitudes of overseas Chinese for more than a century. Each of the towers is surrounded by a bitter past and full of the best truths in the world.
On June 27, 2007, when the Kaiping Diaolou and the Village was selected for World Cultural Heritage in an undisputed manner in only 11 minutes, the World Heritage Conferences assessment concluded that it can The civilization or cultural tradition provides a unique and at least special testimony."
Mingshilou is the best viewing platform in Zili Village. More than a dozen towers and wilderness are all in the eyes. Unfortunately, I am still a bit early, otherwise the green spaces below are all rapeseed~ overlooking the entire self-supporting village, time Changed everything, but it seems that it has not changed anything. Thanks for retaining these towers, so that we can understand the smoke of that era.
Kaiping Li Garden is so beautiful, it's worth following the commentary to savor and worth visiting
Kaiping Li Garden is located in Genghua Village, Tangkou Town, Kaiping City, Jiangmen, Guangdong Province. It is the private garden of Xie Weili, an overseas Chinese from Tangkou Town who lived in America. The name of Li Garden comes from the owner's name, carrying the meaning of 'establishing trees and establishing people'.
Construction of Li Garden began in 1926 and was preliminarily completed in 1936, covering an area of about 19,600 square meters. It combines traditional gardening, Western architecture, and the characteristics of Jiangnan water towns, creating a unique architectural style in Chinese gardens. It stands out as one of the more complete gardens in China that integrates Chinese and Western elements.
What touches people about Li Garden, besides its distinctive architecture that blends Chinese and Western styles, is the poignant love story of the male owner and his four women. Li Garden was built in the 1930s by Xie Weili, an overseas Chinese who lived in America. Born in Kaiping in 1893, Xie left home at the age of 6 to study in the United States. After graduating from university, he went into business and founded Weili Company in 1919, dealing in clothing, handicrafts, and medicinal herbs. In 1926, he returned to his hometown to build Li Garden, following his father's instructions. It took 10 years and cost 40,000 silver dollars.
Like many overseas Chinese of that era, Xie Weili was polygamous, with four wives and 21 children. The stories of the women of Li Garden are mostly tragic, like those of the female protagonists in 'Dream of the Red Chamber'—'ill-fated and full of hardships'. Among the four wives, one went mad, one died, one remarried, and their life paths were filled with sorrow and melancholy. Only the third wife was fortunate and had a good fate. The specific touching stories await visitors to explore in detail during their travels.
It is recommended to spend 2 hours for the visit.
maximillian.aurelius.ravenwood Why is such a beautiful World Heritage site so unvisited??
Haha, dear friends, let me share with you a super interesting place—the Kaiping Diaolou Cultural Tourism Area in Guangdong! This place is a World Heritage site, and I went there last weekend full of excitement. Guess what? It wasn't crowded at all, it was almost like I had the whole place to myself! 😜
As soon as I stepped into Zili Village, I was stunned by the lush green rice fields in front of me, which looked like a huge green gem, so clean that I couldn't help but want to roll around in it! The children were running and playing in it, just like they had stepped out of a painting.
In the pond, the water lilies were blooming quietly, as if showing off their elegance. What surprised me even more was that I saw a long-missed swallow's nest, with little swallows chirping inside, which was incredibly cute!
What's even more amazing is that there are local people living here. When I was taking photos, I even saw an auntie hoeing the field, which was full of the breath of life.
Not only can you enjoy the beautiful natural scenery here, but you can also learn about the rich historical and cultural heritage. It's really suitable for all ages and offers the best of both worlds! I just wonder, why isn't everyone interested in such a fun place? 😂
Oh right, the most famous spot here is the Ming Shi Building, which was featured in the movie 'Let the Bullets Fly'. I took a tour and it was really eye-opening! Inside, there were phonographs, pans for frying steaks, cat cages, bathtubs, toilets, and so on, just like a mini-museum!
I specifically looked up some information and found out that these diaolous were built by overseas Chinese who made money and came back. They put a lot of thought into protecting themselves from bandits and floods. These diaolous have a spectacular appearance and are designed very cleverly so that people inside can react quickly in case of emergencies.
Although the ticket is a bit pricey, I think it's absolutely worth it for these rice fields and storied diaolous! After all, there's an old saying that goes, 'Since you're here, you might as well enjoy it!' Haha!
Finally, I want to end my share with a phrase from the promotional video of the scenic area: 'Heritage exists not just because of its appearance, but because of the people who live here, their way of life, and its expression, which is intriguing.' I hope more people will discover this treasure and come to experience its charm together! 😉

Kaiping Sanbu Republic of China Arcade Buildings Travel Guide
Kaiping Sanbu 🌳 authentic Republic of China arcade buildings|||
👣Stepping away from the bustling Kaiping Diaolou scenic area, avoiding the crowds, spending an afternoon in the downtown area of Kaiping to see the authentic arcade buildings is also a nice experience. This place used to be the throat to western Guangdong and Guangxi, with merchants from Jiangmen and Guangzhou coming here to do business. During the Republic of China period, Sanbu was the largest commercial center in the middle and upper reaches of the Tanjiang River, known as 'Little Guangzhou'. Although it now appears somewhat dilapidated due to years of neglect, one can still glimpse its former glory.
🏮The Sanbu arcade building cluster is located along the Tanjiang River in Kaiping City, collectively referring to Changsha Bu, Dihai Bu, and Xinchang Bu. The main arcade streets are concentrated in Dihai and Xinchang, covering a large area. It might take two to three hours to walk through the entire area. Due to the disrepair of most arcade buildings over the years, they have become dangerous buildings, and some residents and merchants in certain areas have moved out awaiting renovation.
✅Location:
You can locate Kaiping City's Fengcai Hall or nearby Fengcai Road/Zhonghe Road. The area is large, so you can take your time exploring.
👅Nearby delicacies:
Bamboo Flavor Pavilion · Special Bamboo Tube Rice (No. 17 Xiangdi Road, Sanbu Sub-district), a very ordinary-looking small restaurant, but surprisingly every dish is delicious, with no disappointments.
🌈Tips:
1️⃣The Sanbu arcade building cluster is not a scenic spot, and the streets are open to vehicular traffic. Although there are few cars, they tend to drive fast, so be careful when taking photos.
2️⃣Some buildings have become dangerous, and when it's windy, objects may be blown down. Pay attention to falling objects to avoid accidents.
3️⃣There are no places nearby to store luggage. If you are not on a self-driving tour, it is recommended to store your luggage at a hotel or station first, as dragging luggage around can somewhat affect the experience.
The famous Kaiping Diaolou
After the movie 'The Race' became a hit, it brought fame to Jiangmen, Guangdong. When traveling to Jiangmen, one must visit the renowned Kaiping Diaolou, a 5A tourist attraction and one of the 50 must-visit places in a lifetime.
Guangdong's first World Cultural Heritage site, it is a multi-story tower building that combines defense, residential living, and a blend of Chinese and Western architectural art.
The Kaiping Diaolou were first built in the early Qing Dynasty, with a large number constructed in the 1920s and 1930s. These diaolous were built by overseas Chinese from Guangdong to defend against bandits, funded by overseas Chinese who sent money back to their hometowns. Their appearance is similar to that of a fortress and they also have some of the functions of a fortress, hence the name 'diaolou'.
As a famous World Cultural Heritage site, there are currently over 1,800 diaolou remaining in Kaiping, among which Liyuan, Zilicun, Majianglong, and Jinjiangli have been designated as scenic areas. The Diaolou Cultural Tourism Area
combines garden art, overseas Chinese culture, Chinese and Western architecture, cultural relics, the original ecological natural environment, and diverse local customs and practices.
In the Kaiping Diaolou, one wonders what kind of evening it is
🏯 In the densely populated Pearl River Delta, finding a true countryside might not be easy. But the Kaiping Diaolou and villages may compensate for this regret.
🏯 They stand quietly in the long river of history, just to lay out a rural scene from a hundred years ago for us today—the egrets in the morning, the water buffaloes returning at dusk, the farmers with their bamboo hats, the village pond in front of the ancient houses reflecting...
🏯 This painting is not only fresh with the Lingnan pastoral style but also interspersed with a rich European atmosphere—Ionic capitals, Baroque brick carvings, Gothic domes, and even a hint of Arabian flair...
🏯 Walking among them, one feels as if traveling through time and space, marveling at the evening in a world of wonders!

World Cultural Heritage | Kaiping Diaolou
The filming location of the movie 'Let the Bullets Fly', a traditional Chinese residence, Kaiping Diaolou, finally checked in on site!
Here are some suggestions for reference:
1⃣Transportation: High-speed rail🚄 goes directly to Kaiping South Station
2⃣The Diaolou are scattered in several villages, as shown in the tour map. To visit the Diaolou from Kaiping South Station, you can take a bus, but you still need to walk after getting off, which is not recommended. It is suggested to call a ride-hailing car directly, which can drive directly to the entrance of the scenic spot, which is very convenient and not expensive.
3⃣The Diaolou are distributed in several places, and the tickets are also linked. You can visit selectively according to your own time schedule and interest. I bought the 198 yuan ticket for Zili Village, Liyuan and Chikan, which can be visited in one day. Local people drive by themselves, although there are shuttle buses between the Diaolou, but the time is not free, it is recommended for tourists from other places to take a taxi directly!
4⃣One day is enough to visit the Diaolou. If you need to return to Jiangmen city from Kaiping, if you can't catch the high-speed rail, you can also choose to take a bus. The Kaiping bus station goes directly to Jiangmen bus station, 28 yuan per person, which is very convenient!

The story-filled diaolou and the stories of the diaolou
Kaiping Diaolou is one of the 36 World Cultural Heritage sites in China, and Zili Village in Kaiping, Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province is the main area of the World Heritage site. There are more than 20 diaolou buildings existing, which are the historical marks of generations of Kaiping overseas Chinese struggling overseas and returning home to start businesses.
The Kaiping Diaolou originated in the late Ming Dynasty. Its typical features are thick walls, narrow doors and windows, wall holes inside, and at least two floors, which not only prevent water disasters but also prevent bandits. It has left many tear-jerking stories, one of which is the seven brave men of Situ resisting the Japanese army for seven days and nights...
Kaiping Diaolou
The only world cultural heritage in Guangdong Province - Kaiping Diaolou and Villages, is located in Kaiping City, Jiangmen City. Kaiping "No Diaolou, No Village", the existing 1833 Diaolou are distributed in various villages in Kaiping, and are concentrated in Tangkou Town, Chikan Town, Baihe Town, and Xiangang Town. Therefore, Kaiping is known as "the hometown of various types of buildings". Diaolou refers to the multi-storey tower-style residences used for defense and living, including reinforced concrete buildings, green brick buildings, mud buildings, and stone buildings. The existing Diaolou in Kaiping were mostly built by the people at the beginning, with the purpose of defending against thieves and avoiding floods. Generally, overseas Chinese would have someone design the Diaolou blueprint and bring it back to their hometown for construction. The architectural styles and styles of Diaolou are diverse, including both traditional Chinese hard-top style and hanging mountain style, as well as foreign Gothic style, Roman style, etc. The colonnades of ancient Greece, the arches and columns of ancient Rome, the leaf-shaped arches and iron carvings of Islam, the arches of the Gothic period, the mountain flowers of Baroque architecture, the decorative techniques of the new art movement, and the architectural art forms of the industrial school, etc., have all been integrated into the local architecture of Kaiping. To be precise, it is a combination of "fragments" of various architectural styles at home and abroad, and a product of the blending of various architectural types. The Kaiping Diaolou included in the World Cultural Heritage List includes: Yinglong Building and Sanmenli Village, Zili Village and Fang's Lantern Building, Majianglong Village Diaolou Group and Jinjiangli Village, a total of 20 Diaolou in four groups, representing more than 1,800 tower buildings in Kaiping, representing the peak of nearly five centuries of tower building, and also showing the still close connection between overseas Chinese scattered abroad and their homeland. From the perspective of use function, these buildings can be divided into three forms: the public buildings mainly used for temporary refuge built by everyone, with 473 existing; the residential buildings with defense and living functions built by wealthy families alone, with 1,149 existing; and the watchtowers used for joint defense and early warning, with 221 existing.
From the perspective of building materials, there are stone buildings, rammed earth buildings, brick buildings and reinforced concrete buildings, and the latter two are the majority of what we see this time.
From the perspective of construction time, the earliest Diaolou can be traced back to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and it reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s, most of which were built by overseas Chinese returning home during the Republic of China.
People analyze from the perspectives of historical culture and geographical environment, the period of the Republic of China was a period of social transformation when China's internal troubles and foreign troubles coexisted, domestic wars were frequent, and social security was extremely poor. Kaiping is located in the "four no-man's land" at the junction of Xinhui, Taishan, Enping, and Xinxing counties, where bandits are particularly rampant. In addition, it is a low-lying plain area, often suffering from floods and floods, and the initial intention of building Diaolou was mainly to prevent bandits and floods.

Kaiping Diaolou has a very strong historical feature and is one of the representatives of Guangfu culture. Liyuan and Zilicun are outstanding representatives of Diaolou architecture.
The village in the flower bush, the masterpiece of Lingnan architecture

Kaiping - Where East Meets West
Kaiping is one of the most fascinating places in China. It is an entire city effectively built by Chinese returning from overseas. It has a strange mixture of old fashioned European Charm, Chinese traditions, and then medieval style fortifications, which serve to remind us that the area was not always the law abiding haven that it is today! What an amazing place! #kaiping

There was alot to celebrate this weekend!!!Different people with different cultures came together to celebrate the Mexican holiday “Dia de los muertos” (the day of the dead) and South Africa winning the Rugby World cup in Japan while England embraced taking second place. We also celebrated beautiful Kaiping in China. It was the perfect place to celebrate Halloween...pumpkin carving, skull painting and exploring old Diaolous (watch towers) and villages dating from as far back as 1920. Another trip for the memory bank! #HalloTrip #Halloween #trip.com #happydays
Guangdong two-day self-driving tour - Jiangmen, see Kaiping Lou. The Diaolou is a multi-storey tower building that combines defense, residence and Chinese and Western architectural art. When the Chinese and Western architecture of the Republic of China is combined, time leaves an old mark here. Jinjiang Lilou Building includes three luxurious European-style castles, including Ruishi Building, Shengfeng Building and Jinjiang Tower. Standing in the village house, people can feel the strong harmony of Chinese and Western style. In 2005, it was named the most beautiful residence in Guangdong. There won't be many visitors here. Between the village trails, local Hakkas sell some Hakka dishes. The price is not expensive. One of the two buildings in the public building, the most simple building on the third floor was built earlier, the function is mainly to defend the refuge, and the Ruishi Building and the Shengfeng Building are all located in the rich families of the village, so it is beautiful and gorgeous. Ruishilou is the tallest of all the towers, so it also has the reputation of the first floor of Kaiping.

The large garden is mainly laid out with the "Liyuan" big archway and the "Benli Daosheng" archway as the axis. The two ends of the archway are dominated by two steel-made tiger whip. It is spectacular, and there is a release pool along the archway. The Aviary Park and the Crown Flower Rattan Pavilion are dotted. The Pei Pei Villa in the northwest corner is the finishing touch. The building is built to commemorate the love of Tan Yuying. The love story between them makes it more romantic and beautiful.
The resumes and memories of the overseas Chinese have become legends in the history of world architecture. There are Greek colonnades, ancient Roman arches, Byzantine domes and even Indian and Islamic-style decorations. If it is a modern person who is sure to be criticized and praised by foreigners, it is quite possible to make a chance of being smoky. In the old days, local craftsmen can have such skills. After a hundred years, they still stand and are full of charm. These architectural elements of different styles and different religions show great inclusiveness in Kaiping, and they gather together in a harmonious way to form a new comprehensive and strong architectural type, showing a unique artistic charm.
