In 1863, King Edward Park was opened as a recreation reserve. Inside the courtyard is a bowling green, an obelisk built in 1850 as a nautical symbol; the focal point is a Victorian rotunda. Spectacular ocean views, Norfolk Island pines and a low-lying garden that is usually colourful can be found within this park. The southern border is a remnant of Shepherds Hill Battery and Gunner's Cottage, which were frequently used from 1890 until World War II. The park has links to natural swimming pools (or convict-hewn ocean baths) at the foot of the eastern cliffs and Newcastle's criminal history. It's a great place for family picnics and barbecues, and in the summer it's also a venue for movies.
