Where Is Zhangjiajie Located? A Look at the Zhangjiajie Map

Zhangjiajie Location Map

Source: Wikipedia

Zhangjiajie is tucked away in the northwest corner of Hunan Province, right in the heart of China. If you’re scanning a map of the country, you’ll find it inland, nestled roughly between Changsha (the provincial capital) and Chongqing. The entire region is cradled by mountains, lush forests, and winding river valleys—which is exactly what gives the landscape its breathtaking, dramatic flair.

I mention this because it’s important for planning your travel time. Zhangjiajie isn’t right next to any major city, so most travelers choose to fly in or hop on a high-speed train from Changsha.

  • Distance from Changsha: ~330 km
  • Distance from Guangzhou: Approximately 900 km
  • Distance from Shanghai: ~1,200 km
  • Distance from Beijing: Approximately 1,500 km

How Can You Get to Zhangjiajie?

How Can You Get to Zhangjiajie? A Look at the Zhangjiajie Train Transportation Map

By Air

Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport serves as your primary gateway to the skies. With direct flights connecting to most major Chinese cities, you'll find that reaching this breathtaking destination is faster and easier than you ever imagined!

  • Beijing to Zhangjiajie: A journey of about 1,500 km, taking roughly 2.5 hours by direct flight
  • Shanghai to Zhangjiajie: A journey of about 1,200 km, taking roughly a 2-hour direct flight
  • Guangzhou to Zhangjiajie: A journey of about 900 km, just a 1.5-hour direct flight away
  • Shenzhen to Zhangjiajie: A journey of about 950 km, just a 1.5-hour direct flight away
  • Changsha to Zhangjiajie: A journey of about 330 km, with a direct flight taking around 1 hour

Once you touch down, you're just 5 km away from the city centre—a quick 10 to 15-minute drive. If you're heading to the stunning Wulingyuan Scenic Area, it's a bit further out at about 30 to 35 km, which will take you roughly 45 to 60 minutes by car.

I typically book my flights to Zhangjiajie via Trip.com—it makes comparing prices a breeze, and you even have the option to bundle your flights and hotels for extra convenience!

How Can You Get to Zhangjiajie? A Look at the Zhangjiajie Flight Map

By Train

Zhangjiajie is served by two railway stations, each handling different types of trains. It’s important to know the difference, as choosing the wrong station could mean adding unnecessary travel time to your journey.

  • Zhangjiajie West Railway Station serves high-speed rail lines. It is located about 10 km from the city center, making for a quick 20-minute drive.
  • Zhangjiajie Railway Station serves conventional rail lines. It is much closer to the city center, making it easily accessible by foot or a short taxi ride.

High-speed train routes:

  • Changsha to Zhangjiajie West: A journey of about 330 km, taking roughly 3.5 to 4 hours
  • Chongqing to Zhangjiajie West: A journey of about 670 km, taking roughly 5 to 6 hours
  • Guangzhou to Zhangjiajie West: A journey of about 900 km, taking roughly 6 to 7 hours

Standard train routes (a bit slower, but easier on the wallet):

  • Beijing to Zhangjiajie Railway Station: A journey of about 1,500 km, taking roughly 17 to 20 hours
  • Shanghai to Zhangjiajie Railway Station: A journey of about 1,200 km, taking roughly 15 to 18 hours
  • Guangzhou to Zhangjiajie Railway Station: A journey of about 900 km, taking roughly 12 to 14 hours

From either station, you can easily hop on a taxi or bus to reach the Wulingyuan Scenic Area in about 45 to 60 minutes, or head over to Tianmen Mountain in just 15 to 20 minutes.

What Are the Top Attractions in Zhangjiajie?

Zhangjiajie Tourist Map

If you take a look at a tourist map of Zhangjiajie, you'll see that the attractions are grouped in different areas rather than all in one place. Here's how they're laid out.

  • Tianmen Mountain is located right next to Zhangjiajie City, just a stone's throw from the airport and railway stations. It’s a breeze to visit on your arrival or departure day since you won't have to travel far at all!
  • The Wulingyuan Scenic Area is home to the big names: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yuanjiajie, and Tianzi Mountain. It's located about 30 to 35 km north of the city, a drive of roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Wulingyuan Town sits right next to the park entrances, making it the perfect base for your adventures.
  • The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge are located further east of Wulingyuan, about 30 to 40 km away. Most travelers plan a separate half-day or full-day trip to explore them.
Wulingyuan Scenic Area Map

Inside the Wulingyuan Scenic Area

Wulingyuan isn't just one single park. It's a vast protected area made up of several connected scenic zones, all linked by a network of internal shuttle buses, hiking trails, and cable cars.

  • Zhangjiajie National Forest Park sits at the heart of the map. It's the most popular section and home to the iconic sandstone pillars that inspired the landscapes of Avatar. This area includes Yuanjiajie, Golden Whip Stream, and the Bailong Elevator. Most first-time visitors spend the bulk of their time here.
  • Located north of the forest park, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve is a must-visit for its sweeping panoramic views, ethereal sea-of-clouds scenery, and breathtaking sunrise spots. With convenient shuttle buses and a cable car connecting it to the forest park, it’s incredibly easy to explore both areas in just a day or two!
  • Yangjiajie is located on the western side of the Wulingyuan map. It's a quieter area, offering steeper hiking trails and dramatic ridgelines.
  • The Suoxiyu Scenic Area is just around the corner, offering a lovely escape with its picturesque valleys, babbling streams, and more relaxed walking paths.

These last two areas are a bit quieter, which is perfect if you're looking to escape the crowds at the main viewpoints while still soaking in the magic of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area.

Tianmen Mountain Map & Cableway Routes

Tianmen Mountain Map

Tianmen Mountain is located right next to Zhangjiajie City, and the map highlights two main ways to reach the summit: by cable car or by scenic bus.

The Tianmen Mountain Cableway is the most popular route, whisking you directly from the city centre to the mountain's peak. As one of the longest cable car rides in the world, the views you'll soak in during the ascent are absolutely breathtaking.

The alternative route takes you on a scenic bus ride, winding up the mountain via the legendary 99-bend road. You'll pause near Heaven's Gate (Tianmen Cave) before continuing your ascent to the upper reaches. Depending on your ticket, you might head up one way and return the other—the map makes it all crystal clear at a glance!

At the summit, a circular walkway system connects the cliff-edge glass paths, forest trails, and observation decks. Just follow the color-coded routes on your map, and be sure to budget a little extra time for the queues at the popular glass sections!

Heaven's Gate is tucked away just below the summit, waiting to be discovered. You can make your way there by taking a long escalator ride or climbing the stairway.

You can book your Tianmen Mountain tickets in advance to breeze right past the ticket window queues!

Map of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon & Glass Bridge

Map of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon & Glass Bridge

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon map highlights the layout of one of the region's most thrilling attractions, with the iconic Glass Bridge at its heart.

From the entrance, well-marked trails guide visitors through the canyon floor, past scenic riverside viewpoints, and directly to the suspension bridge. Spanning the canyon, the Glass Bridge offers breathtaking aerial views of the cliffs and river far below.

You'll also find these other highlights marked on the map:

  • Waterfall viewpoints along the side trails
  • Picnic spots
  • Shuttle bus stops
  • Elevator access points

If you're planning a trip to the Glass Bridge, I highly recommend arriving early. It tends to get busy by mid-morning, and the glass walkway is so much more breathtaking when you have a little space to soak it all in, rather than being shoulder-to-shoulder with the crowds.

Looking for the Perfect 1-Day Hiking Route in Zhangjiajie?

Looking for the Perfect 1-Day Hiking Route in Zhangjiajie?

If you’ve only got one full day to explore the National Forest Park, this core loop hits all the must-see spots without any wasted backtracking. I’ve personally trekked this route, and it’s a fantastic way for first-timers to soak it all in!

Kickoff: East Gate
Kick off your adventure right at the park entrance.

1. Hop on the shuttle bus to the Bailong Elevator
The shuttle bus whisks you away to the base of the Bailong Elevator, the quickest route to reach those breathtaking mountain-top viewpoints.

2. Explore Yuanjiajie
This is the perfect spot to get an up-close look at those iconic Avatar-style sandstone peaks. Be sure to set aside a couple of hours to wander through the viewpoints!

3. Hop on the shuttle bus to Tianzi Mountain
From Yuanjiajie, hop on the internal shuttle over to Tianzi Mountain to soak in the panoramic views across the stunning "sea of peaks."

4. Head down to explore the Golden Whip Stream
In the afternoon, make your way down at a leisurely pace and wrap up your adventure with a relaxing stroll along the Golden Whip Stream. The flat, scenic riverside trail is the perfect way to wind down your day.

The Golden Whip Stream trail winds its way back toward the exit.

This route perfectly blends cable car rides with scenic hikes. You'll get to soak in the park's most iconic landscapes without exhausting yourself on day one!

The entrance to the cableway is very easy to find in downtown Zhangjiajie. There’s a local supermarket directly across the street where you can buy essentials such as shoe covers and ponchos, which I highly recommend if there’s any chance of rain. It’s also next door to a McDonald’s and Starbucks if you’d like a western style breakfast before starting your ascent. We arrived just after 11:00 a.m. and first visited the visitor information desk on the right-hand side of the entrance. The staff were excellent—they clearly explained the different ticket options, routes, and pricing. We chose the VIP package, which cost ¥776 in total for two people (¥288 per person, plus a ¥200 guide fee). This included our personal guide, Xiao Chen.Although Xiao Chen didn’t speak English, we communicated easily using translation apps. Along the way, we chatted about local culture, regional food traditions, and daily life. He even shared some edible tea leaves grown in his family’s garden, which was a lovely personal touch. We took Route A via the cable car before transferring to the bus for the Stairway to Heaven. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on our side, and the mountain views were hidden by thick cloud. Even so, after climbing the famous 999 steps, we explored the various attractions and made the most of the experience. Our guide told us that rain is considered a sign of good fortune, and by the end of the day I wholeheartedly agreed. Despite the weather, the trip was absolutely worthwhile and had a unique atmosphere that made it memorable. We completed the entire excursion in around 4–5 hours, comfortably seeing everything the mountain had to offer. If you’re visiting during peak season, I’d definitely recommend the VIP package if it’s within your budget. Having a guide meant we always knew the best route to take, avoided long queues, and got far more out of the experience than we would have on our own.

The lake and boat ride is beautiful!! There were three singing performances on the route. The rest of the area is also very much worth visiting, stunning waterfalls. We did the hike to Yingwo Village, it was a little challenging but the views were worth it!

Everything was great. The tour was only in Chinese, the boat ride was at the end, and the beginning involved quite a bit of climbing (not suitable for those with limited walking ability). The cave itself was very beautiful, with video installations everywhere. But, of course, it was very well-maintained, as they love in China; there was no trace of wildness whatsoever.

I came to see the magnificent building and it was worth it. Its a very different architecture designed and you can only see this in Zhangjiajie. So definitely you should not miss it! Entrance tickets is affordable so why not.

Where’s the Best Place to Stay in Zhangjiajie?

Zhangjiajie Accommodation Map

A hotel map helps you choose the best base depending on your itinerary and which attractions you plan to visit. While hotels are scattered across the region, most travelers focus on two main areas: Zhangjiajie City and Wulingyuan Town.

Zhangjiajie City

  • Best for: Arrivals, departures, and city convenience
  • Location: You'll be perfectly positioned near Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport, local train stations, and a variety of delicious dining spots.
  • The downside: It's about 30 to 35 km away from the National Forest Park, so expect a 45 to 60-minute commute each day to reach the primary scenic areas.

Stick to the city if you're just passing through, arriving late, or catching an early flight the next day. It’s also your best bet if you’re craving a wider variety of dining spots and nightlife adventures.

Wulingyuan Town

  • Perfect for: Your main sightseeing days at Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie, and the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge
  • Location: You're just a short stroll or quick shuttle ride away from most park entrances and cable cars!
  • Benefit: Save time on your journey, get an early start to beat the crowds, and enjoy easy access to local restaurants, shops, and cozy guesthouses.

If you're planning two or more days of sightseeing, Wulingyuan Town is the place to stay. You'll save plenty of time on commuting, and getting an early start before the crowds arrive makes a world of difference at the most popular viewpoints.

I always check hotel prices on Trip.com before I book. It’s so easy to filter by location, star rating, and guest reviews, making it a breeze to find the perfect spot that fits your budget!
