Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park, also known as Heaven's Gate Mountain, is a national AAAAA-level scenic spot located around 8 kilometres south of the Zhangjiajie’s city centre in the Hunan Province. Covering a giant area of 96 square kilometres, it’s the highest mountain in Zhangjiajie, and also a designated World Geopark and National Forest Park. The park takes its name from Tianmen Cave, or Heaven’s Gate, the vast natural arch that carves through the cliff face with 999 steps leading up to the entrance. It’s also well known for having the longest single-line passenger cable car in the world. At the top of the mountain, there are walking trails to enjoy, glass skywalks, mountain views, and the Tianmen Mountain Temple.

Our enjoyment was not so great but it was due to weather. It had some heavy fogs when we arrived, later on the fog was a little less, but even so we couldn't have a nice view. But from what we saw, it is a beautiful scenery. It must be awesome with a clean sky. Also, plan which cable car you want to go and take a look which entrance it is. We wanted to go to Tianzishan, so we took east entrance. If we went to south entrance we would have to walk for about 2hrs. The tickets you buy is for 4 days, and the cable cars and elevator you buy them inside the park, right before going up. My father went on the next day and got a better view, this time he went to the Bailong Elevator, which also has a stunning view.

This is my 2nd time returning and visiting Tianmen National Park this year after my 1st visit earlier this year. This time i am lucky to have better weather and sky conditions to get good visibility to see the entire Tianmen Cave shape. I will definitely return in future and hope next time i will be as lucky not just clear sky but with bright Sunshine shining the Tianmen Cave. I always find buying and getting the tickets from Trip.com is super convenient and easy. Also, i got better discounted ticket prices offered by Trip.com. Recommend to anyone looking forward to visiting Tianmen National Park.

A cult place, the organization is beyond praise: interesting and comfortable. The evening light show certainly isn't like the one on Instagram, but if you don't have high expectations, it's beautiful. However, I wouldn't recommend staying there unless you have tickets for the show downstairs.

We loved it. The Gates of Heaven itself is interesting, but above it is a park where you could spend the whole day. The main lift was under repair, but the lift on the main line is even more picturesque. You can walk to the top, but there are escalators, I think there are about 14. Everything is organized to a high standard: paths, safety, navigation. We highly recommend it!

What Is Tianmen Mountain?
Tianmen Mountain is a forest-park mountain located on the edge of Zhangjiajie, which sits in the north-west region of Hunan Province. The mountain itself rises to about 1,518m, making it the highest peak near the city.
The mountain takes its name from Tianmen Cave, also known as Heaven’s Gate. You’ve probably seen pictures of the giant natural arch that punches clean through the cliffside at the top of a large set of stairs. Locals have long held that it leads straight to heaven, hence the nickname.
Once you’ve climbed the 999 steps to the Tianmen Cave itself, several escalators bored into the rock carry you higher again to the plateau at the very top. From here, hiking trails branch out along the edge of the plateau, taking you to glass skywalks, across suspension bridges, and to the Tianmen Mountain Temple.

Tianmen Mountain Tickets, Prices & Opening Hours
You need to pay for a ticket to visit Tianmen Mountain, and prices start from around AU $60. With that, you don’t only get entrance to the wider area, but also a round trip on the main cable car as well as including rides on the in-park shuttle buses.
The park is open daily from 7:30 AM to 7:00 PM, with last admission accepted at 4:00 PM.
What the base ticket usually does not cover:
- The summit chairlift (a short, open two-seater ride across the top)
- Some of the extra escalator routes, which cost a small fee
- Shoe covers for the glass skywalk, which are compulsory and cost a small fee on the spot
It’s important to remember your passport, as you’ll need it to redeem your booking and get through the gate.
Understanding the Tianmen Mountain Routes: Routes A, B and C
When it comes to buying a ticket for Tianmen Mountain, there are three different options. All three cover the same ground (the cable car, Tianmen Cave, the 999 steps and the summit) and cost the same. What changes is the order in which you will do them on the day, and whether you ride the long scenic cable car up, down, or skip it entirely.
Whatever you choose, note that ascending or descending the 999 steps is optional; there’s an escalator that makes the same journey for a small fee. You can also trade out your ride on the express cable car for a shuttle bus that tackles the famous Tongitan Avenue, or the "Avenue Toward Heaven". More on that below.
Route A: Cable Car Up, Express Cable Car Down
This is the classic choice for most travelers. It starts with the long and scenic cable car to the mountain plateau where you’ll explore the summit before heading down the escalators towards Heaven’s Gate, arriving at the top of the 999 steps. You’ll then have to walk the steps downhill, and from there, you will take the express cable car back out. It gives you the whole experience.
Route B: Express Cable Car Up, Cable Car Down
Route B is the opposite of Route A: you’ll take the express cable car up, then climb the 999 steps upward to Heaven's Gate while your legs are fresh. From here, you’ll take the escalators up to the summit, and finish with the long scenic cable car down the mountain. I think this is the best option if the stairway climb is the thing you’re most interested in.
Route C: Round Trip on the Express Cable Car
Route C swaps a journey on the long cable car for the express at both ends. You’ll arrive at the bottom of Heaven’s Gate, climb the steps upward, and then take the escalators to the summit. The same route back down; escalators, stairs, then the express cable car. This is the best option if you’re afraid of heights, as the Tianmen Mountain cable car gets near-vertical in some stretches and might be a dealbreaker. More on that below.

What to See and Do at Tianmen Mountain
From the cable car itself to the Mountain Temple and hiking, there’s plenty to keep you busy for an entire day on Tianmen Mountain.
The Tianmen Mountain Cable Car
The landscapes all over Tianmen Mountain are spectacular, but the Tianmen Mountain cable car is one of the big highlights of a trip here. At 7,455 meters, it’s one of the longest passenger cable cars in the world.
The ride starts from a station in the middle of Zhangjiajie, right next to the railway and bus stations (very convenient). From here, it climbs more than 1,200 meters up to the top of the mountain. Each car can hold eight people, and the ride takes roughly 28 minutes, first whisking you over the rooftops of the city into the surrounding farmland, before heading up a sheer cliff face.
It’s generally considered more scenic to go up the mountain on the cable car. But if you’re anything like me and afraid of heights, beware the final stretch. The sheer vertical climb provides amazing views but can be very scary.

Heaven's Gate and the Stairway to Heaven
Heaven’s Gate, also called TIanmen Cave, is the main image that sells a visit to Zhangjiajie. The vast natural arch in the cliff face is incredible to behold, especially when the sun is glancing through the opening. It’s made even more impressive with the 999 steps leading up to it; nine is a lucky number in Chinese culture, and 999 is meant to signal something close to forever.
If climbing that many stairs gives you pause, don’t worry. An escalator runs up through the inside of the mountain to the cave, delivering you to the top without breaking a sweat. It makes the whole trip doable for less mobile travellers and anyone travelling with kids or grandparents.
The Tongitan Avenue Shuttle Bus
There is another way up the mountain, and it’s via one of the most scenic roads in the world. The Tongitan Avenue, the "Avenue Toward Heaven", is a route that switchbacks through 99 hairpin bends to the foot of the cave (not recommended if you’re prone to motion sickness). Private cars aren’t allowed; instead, you’re shuffled onto a bus that corkscrews itself to the tip in about 25 to 30 minutes.
The ride is included in whatever ticket option you go with, and acts as a replacement for the express cable car, if you like.

Otherwise plan for 3 days for a more relaxed visit or maybe take the cable cars and elevator. I spent two days hiking this beautiful park, took no cable ways or elevator, just the free shuttle buses that are included in your ticket. The first day had a bad weather with rain all day long and a lot of fog, but I still enjoyed it a lot. That should give you an idea of how pretty the park is.

Hiking the Summit: The East and West Lines
Once you’ve arrived at the top, you’ll be getting around on foot. The summit is laid out as one big loop split into two halves: the East Line and the West Line, which meet at the Mountain Temple at the far end of the plateau.
The East Line is more dramatic, with most of the glass skywalks and paths bolted straight into the rockface, with big drops on one side and wide views over the surrounding mountains. It’s longer, and busier.
The West Line is quieter, with more forest, and a more gentle path that’s not quite as scary in parts.
On both routes, you’ll find glass skywalks, jutting out from the cliff’s edge with nothing but air and a very long drop beneath the glass under your feet. Shoe covers are compulsory, and cost a small extra fee. The glass skywalks aren’t necessary to do to complete the hiking routes.

Tianmen Mountain Temple
Where the East and West Lines meet is the Tianmen Mountain Temple, the spiritual heart of the mountain. Originally built during the Tang dynasty, it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times across its thousand-year-history. It’s a Buddhist centre and said to be one of only a handful of temples that hold genuine relics of the Buddha, which is a big part of why pilgrims have been making the journey up the mountain for centuries.
It’s free to enter, and after the glass skywalks, it’s a nice place to slow down. There’s incense in the air, bells tolling through the surrounding trees, and great views. Near the temple there’s also a small cave, and there’s even a small spot to grab some food.
How to Get to Tianmen Mountain
Getting to Tianmen Mountain is refreshingly simple once you're in Zhangjiajie, because the cable car leaves from the middle of the city rather than out at the mountain. From most of the hotels in the city centre, it’s a short taxi or a walk to the station.
Getting to Zhangjiajie itself is the longer leg. The regional airport is Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG), about 5 to 10 km from the city centre, with airport buses running in to the cable car area.

Tianmen Mountain from Shanghai
If you want to visit from Shanghai, flying to Zhangjiajie is the easiest way. There are several flights a day between Shanghai Pudong and Zhangjiajie, and the flight time is two and a half hours.
There are also one or two direct high-speed trains, but it’s a much longer journey. There’s also no direct overnight train on this route.

Staying at Wotianju this trip was a delightful surprise! It's incredibly close to all the attractions, basically within ten minutes. We drove there ourselves, and the hotel itself is unbelievably huge – you even need to drive to get around inside! The front desk also gave us a free room upgrade, which made us really not want to leave. The hotel pays attention to details everywhere: the butler service is super responsive and on-call, the welcome fruit was chilled, and even a simple blanched lettuce at the Chinese restaurant was delicious. You can tell the chef really knows their stuff – it was fresh and not greasy. You could easily just stay at the hotel for all your eating, drinking, and entertainment needs. There's a huge lawn, and reading a book and having tea by the river under the trees was just incredibly relaxing; time just seemed to slow down. After dinner, we'd go swimming and then soak in the hot springs. Honestly, even though it's an outdoor hot spring, the cleanliness was excellent. Back where we're from, a hot spring of this quality for two people would cost about the same as a night's stay! I forgot my facial cleanser when we left, and the butler even arranged for SF Express to send it home – absolutely perfect! The food in the restaurant was excellent. We ate there multiple times and everything we ordered was fresh, delicious and very reasonably priced. It was a lovely place to relax after a long day exploring the park.

We would have to admit that this Hampton hotel exceeded our expectations of a 4-star hotel. Below are some of the things we love here.
Breakfast is delicious with so many choices. We love wontons with the black-chicken broth and a variety of hot soy drinks. Breakfast starts at 6:30am, which allows us an early head start. We were impressed by Luna’s enthusiasm at our breakfast for her 5-star customer service!
Location is right across Tianmen Mountain cable station. It is literally about 7 minutes walking. If you plan to go to Tianmen Mountain, you could beat the crowds.
The room is huge and clean! The sliding doors provide privacy and ambiance between bedroom and bathroom.There are many other amenities as listed on the hotel website, but what we love the most would be self laundry service without a need of finding detergent. We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Manyuan Resort. From the moment we arrived, the entire team was incredibly kind, welcoming, and always willing to help us with anything we needed.
The resort itself is beautiful, extremely clean, peaceful, and very comfortable. Everything is well maintained, and the atmosphere makes you feel at home. Their hospitality really made a difference during our stay. They also offer tea and food, which we really enjoyed, and everything was excellent.
The location is another huge advantage. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is only about a 10-minute walk away, making it very convenient for exploring the area. It is also close to the bridge area, where you can enjoy the beautiful drone, light, and waterfall shows at night, which was a great experience.
What we appreciated most was how genuinely friendly and attentive everyone was. After long days exploring Zhangjiajie, coming back to Manyuan felt relaxing and comfortable.
We are extremely grateful to the entire team for making our stay so enjoyable. If I ever return to Zhangjiajie, I would not hesitate for a second to stay at Manyuan Resort again. It truly felt like a home away from home.

I really enjoyed my stay at Yuxi Homestay. The location is great, quiet and peaceful, and my room was very comfortable with a lovely view, just like in the photo.
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout my stay. Their English is limited, but this was never really an issue as we used a translator when needed. They always made an effort to answer my questions, give me useful tips and make sure I knew how to get around.
One of the best things was how well they helped organise my visits to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The routes were explained clearly and in detail, with maps and helpful suggestions. A member of staff also drove me to the attractions and picked me up afterwards, which made everything so much easier.
Breakfast was served at Anting Holiday Hotel, just across from Yuxi Homestay. There was a good variety of food every day and plenty of different options to choose from. The owner was also very friendly and welcoming.

I had such a lovely stay here! It’s a shame that I only stayed for one night. I was able to check in early, which was great after an early train ride and was greeted by friendly staff and a welcome package of snacks, toiletries and homemade glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves! It was so thoughtful and kind of them. The location is perfect with the lower cable way station for Tianmen Mountain just a couple minutes walk away. One of the best hotels I’ve stayed at. Everything was easy and comfortable, and I didn’t face any difficulties during my stay. The reception staff were absolutely amazing—very kind, helpful, and always ready to assist with anything I needed.
The view of Tianmen Mountain and Heaven’s Gate is beautiful, and the location is excellent, very close to the station for going up Tianmen Mountain. It’s also conveniently close to halal restaurants, which was a big plus for me.

The owner, a designer who returned from Shanghai, runs the guesthouse with a relaxed and laid-back aesthetic, not driven by a commercial mindset. Every corner reveals subtle artistic touches, and the entire place exudes a strong personal warmth. I had a long, in-depth conversation with the owner late into the night about spatial design and the philosophy behind creating a mountain retreat. It offered profound insights that went far beyond a typical accommodation experience.
The guest rooms boast large open-air viewing balconies that open up to an endless expanse of the Wuling Mountains, offering direct, breathtaking panoramic views of Tianzi Mountain. The room was quiet and healing, and the tranquil mountain atmosphere allowed me to completely shed the tension of city life. It truly is a rare therapeutic space where one can find emotional solace.
The meals are authentic Tujia local flavors. I highly recommend the bamboo shoot stew with cured pork. The cured pork was generous in portion and quality, with a pure and genuine smoky flavor. All ingredients tasted as if they were fresh from the mountains. The owner even gifted us a few extra local home-style dishes, which perfectly suited our taste – simple yet thoughtfully prepared.
At 6:30 AM, I set off from the guesthouse to hike up to the Baofeng Mountain temple. The empty mountain was serene, allowing me to slowly experience inner cultivation and a state of mind free from external pursuits. The spiritual gains from this mountain retreat far surpassed the beauty of the scenery itself.

Our stay was beyond beautiful! I stayed here with my partner and we are still dreaming about it. The views are absolutely incredible, but the design of the room is what really impressed us. It was incredible, it was clean, perfect mix between modern and a match with the landscape. It’s very private with no one having a view to the room — we were in the upper floor. Great location, only a few min drive to the South Gate to start a full day in Zhangjiajie. I want to add a special thank you to the host for his kindness and attentive instructions on how to visit the park depending on our preferences. He gave us a map and explained everything we could see and what route to follow with realistic time estimations, and on top of that, he drove us to the entrance of the park. I cannot recommend this more. - free laundry service, there is a staff that will wash, dry, fold, and deliver your clean clothes to your room (so helpful when I fell asleep after an exhausting day trip), just make sure you fill out the paper slip
- reception staff offered tea immediately during check-in
- when we had trouble with our card losing access prior to check out, they helped resolve it
- Good variety for the breakfast buffet, the Chinese hot foods rotate so you don’t get bored
- When we wanted breakfast during 0700-0800, a tour group was occurring that time so all the tables were full, they suggested we wait til after 0800. Was slightly inconvenient for me since I booked my entrance ticket for Tianmenshan for 0800-1000. I had to adjust my itinerary slightly since I already paid for the breakfast, but they offered free breakfast for the following day due to the inconvenience which was nice.
Cons:
- Could use better sound proofing, may be worse if your room was located by high traffic areas. I was at the very end of the hall so it was manageable for me.

This stay far exceeded my expectations! The hotel's location is truly unbeatable. I timed it myself: about 20 minutes to the high-speed rail station, 15 minutes to the airport, and only about 10 minutes to the bus/train station. Getting a ride was super easy, making it a true gem for business travelers or anyone needing to catch a train/flight.
What was most surprising is that despite such a convenient location, the hotel's surroundings were exceptionally quiet, completely undisturbed by traffic noise. I slept incredibly soundly at night and could even hear birds chirping in the morning. The service was also very friendly.

Stayed for 3 days with my children. Highly recommend this place. Great attention to details. You are greeted with warm tea the moment you step into the hotel. The receptionists are very welcoming. The lobby offers free coffee, playground for kids, nice reading areas with fully stacked bookshelves including nice selection of Chinese books incluiding history of Zhang Jia Jie. It also has a nice gold fish pond, chess, Go and Chinese Xiang Qi tables. What’s best for travelers like us who’s been out for a while is that they provide FREE washer and dryer! The room has Two Types of Slippers, one massage slipper for shower and one fabric for walking around, which I have never seen! And, it has Remote Controlled Curtains and AI enabled TV! In addition to central air, it also has an air purifier! Breakfast also has wide varieties including on demand noodles, rice noodles, all sorts of Chinese dishes and western salad and pastry. If you want a quiet place with exceptional service, this is the place to stay. We spent 5 nights here. They provide personalised trip planning, discount ticket booking for all attractions in the Zhangjiajie area, and a free shuttle to the South gate entrance. The shuttle is free back and forth (up to 3km one way) for any reason - dinners near the gate, for example. The breakfast is served to you and was delicious, they also accommodated my vegetarian requests.
This is a small hotel - but with a homestay or B&B vibe. A lot of care and detail has been put into the design of the entire facility. There is an elevator. There is a natural spring with a dipper in the lower level - excellent drinking water! We refilled our water bottles there several times. Our room had the forest view with a terrace. It was great to have the extra space to relax in. This comes up as a Didi location, so it was easy to schedule our rides to and from the airport and train station.
We took a Didi back from the east gate one day - so crazy there and noisy in that area! If you like huge hotels and a party atmosphere, stay there. Otherwise, choose the Qiquan.FromPHP 3,724

Upon arrival, the doorman was very enthusiastic and helped with our luggage. We were also upgraded to an executive room during check-in. Since we were traveling with seniors and children, they thoughtfully arranged two rooms directly opposite each other. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The executive room had a small desk perfect for working, and a small balcony. There were shows nearby, as well as a commercial street with plenty of dining options. We were even lucky enough to catch a drone show at night. We had three nights of accommodation in Zhangjiajie, and I'm so glad we chose this hotel for all three days. Our itinerary for tomorrow hasn't started yet, but I hear it's very close to the East Gate of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, within walking distance!
