Lijiang Ancient Town- A step back in time.
Getting There -
Lijiang ancient town is located roughly 35-40 minutes from Lijiang airport by taxi.
Attractions -
For me, the best thing to do during the day is explore. I enjoyed getting lost and taking photos of the old town. To the north is Shuhe and Baisha ancient towns, which are less touristy and a little quieter. Around the towns are plenty of things to do, such as mountain top shows, the tiger leaping gorge, hiking and a few museums.
Hotels -
There are hotels to suit all budgets. There's an Intercontinental on the edge of town for luxury, or you can spend as little as 50rmb per night for a perfectly comfortable room.
Food & Restaurants -
If you love hot pot, you'll love the selection. There's also a wide variety of street food as well as buffet style restaurants.
Shopping -
If it's silver or leather you want, you'll be spoiled for choice. There are also many shops selling traditional Naxi clothes

Shuhe vs Lijiang : Battle of the Old Towns
#2023TravelWish #wintergetaway #Yunnan Travel
We visited both Shuhe and Lijiang Ancient towns to give you the honest review of both. To see our verdict on Lijiang, take a look at my previous post!
Shuhe is a little more on the outskirts of Lijiang city and immediately had more of a home grown vibe than its more commercialised older brother. We came out of season, so many places were closed, but what we did see were more places to snuggle in and have a coffee or a bottle of beer by the river. There were also a lot of interesting stores, here were some of our favourites: Vintage thrift shop, Brass Treasures, Handmade Leather Bags, Coffee Coffee Coffee!

You can find cafes , hotels , grocery stores and many food options inside the town. It comes to life in the afternoon , from Yunnan rose 🌹 cookies to woven scarfs are some of the local finds. If your staying near the town , you will visit allot as it has the Bivou restaurant inside the town. This organic western restaurant was one of our many stops to eat while staying in town.
Over all great location is a must visit.

Shuhe - a less crowded place to stay in LJ
Beautiful old city located in a suburb of Lijiang. they have mosphere here is quite nice, it’s not that overpriced as Lijiang Ancient city. Plenty of dining options, quiet, fresh air right from the nearby mountains and #staycation welcoming people make this place probably more preferable destination for travelers then the downtown.
Getaway House, 📍Lijiang
This Moroccan inspired homestay which is based in Shute Ancient Town, Lijiang is one of the breathtaking places I have stayed during my visit in Yunnan 😍
The homestay comprises of 8 bedroom, each has its own theme and colour contrast with magnificent bathtubs being the center piece of the room. The interior aesthetic is heavily inspired by Moroccan culture and the eye to detail is just eye catching 🤩🤩. The owners are really friendly and helped us a lot throughout our stay at the accommodation. They lunch menu is absolutely delicious and reasonable priced. They have an open plan courtyard where you can sit and and enjoy the atmosphere.
The homestay in at edge of Shuhe Ancient town, with a 5-10 min walk towards the pedestrian street where you see all the shops, bars and restaurants, the walk through the really amazing you can initially spend all day just walking and exploring
If your in Lijiang, stay at this place and trust me you wouldn’t be disappointed.

Shuhe old city - a hidden gem near Lijiang
Getting There - by taxi from Lijiang (20 min drive)
Attractions - shuhe old town
eat and stay at bivou (best find ever)
Shuhe old town has similar old architecture as Lijiang but it’s less touristy and truly a world heritage site. After only visiting it for a day I regret not staying there in the first place as it is a far better choice than Lijiang.
Bivou is a magical place for coffee or lunch overseeing the farmers working on the farm and the squirrels going up and down on the wires and trees. The food comes fresh from their garden and it’s all so delicious.
Lijiang’s Shuhe Ancient Town - Back in Time
📍Getting There - Taking a DiDi is the most convenient way to get there. I’m also pretty sure that you can ride a bus.
⏰ Recommended Time - I’d suggest you spend about 2-3 hours walking around enjoying the beauty of this ancient town. I was there around 10 and a lot of shops weren’t open yet so definitely go there later on. Go after 1 and the ancient town will be very lively!
🥢 Food and Restaurants - There are plenty of restaurants to choose from. There are also plenty of little shops where you can buy snacks and drinks.
Shopping- Tons of shops where you can buy souvenirs, stationeries, books, bracelets, etc.

A relaxed version of Lijiang
Shuhe is an ancient Naxi town near Lijiang. There are shuttle buses running from Lijiang or it costs about 40 Yuan in a taxi. There are lots of hip and retro cafes bars to relax with live music. There are lots of interesting narrow streets especially near the river and temple area. A coffee will cost you 45 rmb, crazy expensive. I'd rather stay here than Lijiang Old Town, it's much quiter and chilled out. There is also a music performance in the square during the evenings.
Shuhe Old Town near Lijiang
The Bivou is a small hostal and restaurant located in Shuhe Old Town, around 20 minutes from Lijiang Old Town. Shuhe Old Town May not be as big as Lijiang Omd Town (and without hills for those not willing to walk that much). This old town gives you a similar vibe than Lijiang’s.
Rooms are great, ours was very big and comfortable, more like a spacious cabin. You have enough space to invite people to your room for board games, family time or drinking evening. Sitting in the entrance surrounded by space and calm is always a nice option, without the noise and movement you find in Lijiang downtown.
Breakfast is buffet American style, so you can find toasts and omelette. Very uncommon in most Chinese style hotels. Restaurant also has plenty food available, and definitely try the strawberry ice cream!

Night Walk
Beauty at night! the feeling of not crowded streets of a tourist spot in Lijiang. You can see the beauty of the place when it’s less people but sometimes you miss it when it’s crowded and busy. I think of that back when everything is normal.
Most of my friends recommends staying at Shuhe Ancient Town as it is not so touristic place not like the Lijiang Old Town. I like this place more as it’s not too crowded and not fancy as the main town in Lijiang.

The dessert shop that I saw on the Internet, the style of the whole dessert shop is partial ins wind, which is unique in the antique Shuhe ancient town, very characteristic, the photos taken are very good, so come to punch.
The dessert shop is close to the backpack for ten years in Shuhe Ancient Town. It is a bit biased, not very easy to find, but the location in the Raiders is quite accurate. The storefront is not very big, the entire dessert shop does not have three tables, and you need to line up when you catch up with people.
This store specializes in French desserts. The taste is very delicious in the ancient city, but our favorite is the decoration of the shop. The photos are very nice, there are many net red elements to shoot. Golden wrought iron chairs, uneven walls, unique mirrors and flowers taken by the boss from the mountains. The dessert store has a good effect and is considered a recommended store.
When it comes to traveling in Yunnan, Lijiang is a city that can't be opened. It has magnificent natural scenery, ancient and simple Naxi culture, and many ancient towns. Among them, Dayan Ancient City is the most popular among tourists. It is not the first town built by the Naxi people. From the data point of view, the Naxi people built the white sand earlier, followed by the Shuhe, and finally built the Dayan.
White sand still retains a relatively primitive appearance, Da Yan is very commercial, only Shuhe takes a good balance between the two.
Dayan Ancient City Because of its location in Lijiang City, and the modern administration center and economic center in modern times, the prosperity is a matter of course. The Shuhe, which has faded its administrative functions, shows a more literary and more casual side.
Baohe Ancient Town can still see some Aboriginal people, more are businessmen who come to Lijiang to do business from other places. It is also a distribution center for holiday travelers and backpackers. Many people live in Shuhe at night, during the day. Nearby Yulong Snow Mountain, Lashihai and Dongba secrets. Just stay in the ancient town, sleep until you wake up naturally, drink an afternoon tea in the afternoon, go shopping for a while, read a few pages of books, listening to a piece of music is also a good choice.
Baohe Ancient Town is known as the village under the peak. You can enjoy the majestic appearance of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in different locations. It is also one of the best preserved ancient towns on the ancient Tea Horse Road. There are many fine restaurants and clear bars in Lijiang. The consumption is medium, not cheap, but the overall production is not bad. The restaurant usually runs from around 10 o'clock in the morning to late at night, even if there is a singer in the daytime, the bar is usually open at night.
When you are used to the spring flowers and autumn months of the Jiangnan scenery, you will be attracted by the local customs and humanities culture; here will give you a different feeling. That day, the tree, the cloud, the house; Yunshan beautiful, simple and simple decoration, planting trees in the room, pushing the window to see the mountain, the natural landscape and the human landscape perfectly blended, such as entering the world.

Shuhe Ancient Town in Lijiang
#chinatrip
Shuhe Ancient Town, nestled just north of Lijiang in Yunnan Province, is a tranquil haven that offers visitors a glimpse into a past world preserved through centuries. As one of the lesser-known but equally charming siblings of Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its well-preserved ancient architecture and peaceful, rustic charm.
Authentic and Peaceful Atmosphere
Walking through the cobblestone streets of Shuhe, visitors can feel the slower pace of life that defines this beautiful place. The town is surrounded by a lush environment, including mountains, streams, and ancient trees, adding to its serene vibe. The architecture here is a mix of traditional Naxi houses made from wood and stone, with beautiful courtyards that open up to the sky, offering peaceful nooks for relaxation and reflection.
Cultural Richness and Local Crafts
Shuhe is not only known for its scenic beauty but also for its rich culture and history. The town was once a crucial stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road and continues to celebrate this heritage with local museums and cultural exhibits that tell the story of the town's past. Additionally, Shuhe is a great place to explore local crafts. Visitors can find handmade leather products, traditional Naxi clothing, and beautiful silver jewelry, all made by local artisans.
Practical Tips
- Getting There: Shuhe is easily accessible by bus or taxi from Lijiang Old Town, only about a 15-minute drive away.
- Best Time to Visit: Late spring and early autumn are ideal, offering pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
- What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes are a must as the town is best explored on foot.
Shuhe Ancient Town is a captivating destination for those looking to experience the quieter side of the Yunnan region. Its combination of natural beauty, historical depth, and cultural vibrancy makes it a perfect escape for history buffs, culture enthusiasts, and anyone in search of peace and authenticity.

I've been to Lijiang 5 times in a year, just for this little riverside restaurant
You must visit Shuhe Ancient Town when you're in Lijiang!!
Because there's a hidden gem of a restaurant🍴
Right at the garden restaurant by the street~
Here, there aren't as many people as in the old town
There aren't as many shops
But what it does have is an extra dose of relaxation, a sense of comfort
The food also has a very Yunnan character
Jasmine Flower Chicken Egg meets Stone, it's my first time trying it
The egg liquid is poured onto the hot stone
The golden color appears instantly~
Inside there's the sweet scent of jasmine flowers
Every bite leaves a lingering fragrance on your lips and teeth
Naxi Hand-torn Ribs
The spicy and fragrant Naxi hand-torn ribs
Cooked slowly over a low flame
The skin is crispy and charred, while the meat inside is tender and flavorful
It's really, really, really delicious!
There's also Dai-style Chicken Feet, Water Spinach, and many other delicious specialty dishes
Every time I come here, I can't bear to leave😭

An impromptu trip to Baisha Ancient Town
Because of work, I went to Heqing and found that Heqing is quite close to Lijiang, so I took the opportunity to play in Lijiang for two days. On the first day, I casually strolled around the Dayan Ancient Town of Lijiang. As someone from Yunnan, whether it's Dali Ancient Town, Lijiang Ancient Town, or the ancient town of Shangri-La, I've become numb to them. On the second day, I checked out the nearby Shuhe Ancient Town (which I had visited before, and I assume it has become as commercialized as Lijiang by now), and Baisha Ancient Town. I had heard about it from a friend before, and it's probably a newly developed attraction now, so I thought of going for a visit.
Transportation: You can take a taxi from anywhere in Lijiang city, and it takes about 30-40 minutes to get there. The taxi fare is also about 30-40 yuan.
Admission: There is no entrance fee for Baisha Ancient Town, but if you want to see the Baisha Murals, you need to buy a ticket for 20 yuan per person.
Specialty food: Yak meat skewers, smoked pork rib hotpot, etc.
Snacks: Personally, I think the 'Mu Zi Skewers' at the entrance taste good, with large skewers for 8 yuan, beef tenderloin for 4 yuan, small skewers for 5 yuan, freshly cut yak meat skewered and sold on the spot. There's also the 'Mantou Poet' downstairs in the writing Baisha, a poet who writes poetry while making steamed buns, making a living here. (His collection of poems is also for sale)
Restaurants: After looking at several restaurants, I finally chose to eat the local specialty 'Grandma's Love Smoked Pork Rib Hotpot'. I personally think it's quite good. The smoked pork rib hotpots I had elsewhere were quite salty, and the meat had a bit of a stale taste, but this one didn't have that feeling, and the dishes were quite fresh. Most importantly, the service was very thoughtful, and the small courtyard environment was also nice.
Attractions: Finally, I went to see the Baisha Murals, with a ticket price of 20 yuan per person. After entering, the environment was very serene, with buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Wenchang Pavilion is a small museum of Naxi culture in Baisha and even the whole Naxi community, where you can learn about the migration, transformation, and development of the Naxi people from ancient times to the present. The Dabaoji Palace and Liuli Hall contain the existing Baisha Murals, which date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. The murals mainly depict Buddhist figures, and some of the murals' facial expressions are no longer clear. To protect the murals, photography is not allowed. It is said that the 55 existing murals in Lijiang are distributed in four temples: Dabaoji Palace, Liuli Hall, Dading Pavilion, and the Dajue Palace in Shuhe. Today, I was fortunate to see them.
Additionally, there is a 500-year-old cypress willow at the entrance of Dabaoji Palace, which is the plant that the Bodhisattva Guanyin holds in the jade bottle. This season is just the peak of its blooming period, and it's very beautiful.
Baisha Ancient Town is the ancient capital of the Naxi people, once the center of Naxi politics, economy, trade, and culture in Lijiang. It is the birthplace of the Mu family's regime, the Lijiang chieftains. This town is the most representative of the Naxi heritage and is the most original Naxi village.
Lijiang Attractions Detailed Introduction & Precautions | Avoiding Tourist Traps in Lijiang
🏔️ Baisha Ancient Town
Compared to the bustling Lijiang Ancient Town and the quiet Shuhe Ancient Town, I prefer Baisha Ancient Town, a village under the snow mountain🏔️, which is also a utopia in the hearts of young people. Here, you can get close to the snow mountain, with photo opportunities galore, and the town is filled with the daily life and culture of the Naxi people.
🏔️ Wenhai Village
A 40-minute drive on mountain roads from Baisha Ancient Town takes you to the other side of the snow mountain. This place boasts pristine natural scenery, tranquil villages, mysterious lakes, and herds of cattle, horses, and sheep that can be seen everywhere, as if you've entered a secluded paradise deep in the snow mountain.
🏔️ Dongba Valley
Located at the foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain🏔️, you can witness the 'Golden Mountain' illuminated by the sunrise⛰️. We set off from Baisha Ancient Town early in the morning, and after more than 20 minutes, we arrived at a natural lake where you can see the complete reflection of the 'Golden Mountain', offering a healing and romantic experience.
🏔️ Black Dragon Pool
One of Lijiang's 4A scenic spots, upon entering, you can see a crystal-clear pool. The place is interestingly juxtaposed with classical architecture by the mountain and water, and the view of the 'Golden Mountain' illuminated by the sun🌞⛰️ here is unparalleled, right next to Lijiang Ancient Town.
🏔️ Lijiang Ancient Town
Lijiang Ancient Town is a national 5A scenic area. Walking here, you can see stone bridges, ancient trees, and streams everywhere, forming a unique waterside landscape. Be sure to slow down and feel the lively atmosphere of the old town, with romantic vibes emanating from places like Zhongyi Alley, Mugu Building, and Sifang Street.
⛰️ Longnu Lake
You can also see the 'Golden Mountain' illuminated by the sunrise⛰️ here, right next to Yuhu Village. Horse riding🐴, blue sky, snow mountain🏔️, lake, grass🌿 meadows, cattle🐮, sheep🐏, and the solitary tree🌲, with a gentle breeze and the sun🌞 shining brightly, the lake surface sparkles with stars⭐, serene and beautiful.
⛰️ Shuhe Ancient Town
One of the settlements of the Naxi ancestors in the Lijiang basin, this place is nestled against the mountain⛰️ and by the water, with an ancient charm, quiet and peaceful environment, and relatively fewer tourists. It's a hidden ancient village away from the hustle and bustle, where you can experience a slow-paced life.
🏔️ Qingxi Reservoir
A beautiful spot with few people, very close to the ancient town. On a clear day, you can see the reflection of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain🏔️. If you're not in a hurry when visiting Lijiang, you can go here for a look, and it's free.
I am wondering who turned Lijiang into a fairy tale world
🎄Spring is the off-season in Yunnan, and the climate is also nice
🎄It is also the most beautiful time for scenery, don't miss the chance to take great photos📸!

Clothing: You really don't need to bring too many clothes to Yunnan, just an overcoat for sun protection or for wearing at night is enough, and you can buy a nice dress in Dali ancient town for about an average price of 70 yuan, along with matching bags and shawls~😍
📌Weather: Just bring an umbrella for both sunny and rainy days, it will come in handy😄
📌It is suggested that only those who have bought tickets to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain go to Ganhaizi to see the sun shining on the golden mountain, because there is an additional charge of 100 yuan per person to enter the mountain. If you didn't get a ticket, it's recommended to go to Dongba Valley to see.
📌To climb Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, you need to grab a ticket at 8 pm the night before at 'Lijiang Tourism Group - Ticket Reservation - Snow Mountain Ticket - Glacier Park Cableway', and fill in your information in advance;
📌After climbing Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, you need to take the large cableway down, and then take a sightseeing bus to Yunsongping or Blue Moon Valley.
The large cableway should be taken according to the time slot, and if you miss the small cableway, they will still let you take it.
📌Shuhe Ancient Town: Quiet and suitable for a leisurely stroll, with beautiful alleys everywhere, the deeper you go, the more primitive and peaceful it becomes
📌Baisha Ancient Town is also great to visit, located at the foot of the snow mountain, with many coffee shops worth visiting, truly leisurely and comfortable.
📌Erhai Lake: Definitely recommend cycling in the Haxi Ecological Corridor, cars are not allowed in the ecological corridor!
📌Ideal State: You can get the feel of Santorini in Dali without going abroad, ~ take lots of great photos📸!

Shuhe Ancient Town | A must-visit in Lijiang, a low-key hidden ancient town
A must-visit in Lijiang, a low-key hidden ancient town. When it comes to Lijiang, you might think of the bustling Lijiang Old Town, but compared to Lijiang Old Town, I would rather recommend the charming yet unassuming Shuhe Ancient Town.
Shuhe Ancient Town is not only a well-preserved important market town on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, but it is also a living specimen of the Naxi people's transition from an agricultural civilization to a commercial one.
Shuhe Ancient Town is divided into new and old districts. The old town area seems to turn back time, taking you back to the era when the Naxi ancestors first settled; while the new town area cleverly integrates tradition with modernity, offering a unique flavor.
Walking on the cobblestone streets, you see the blooming flowers that brighten the entire spring, you hear the jingling horse carriages that restore the prosperity of the Ancient Tea Horse Road, and you see the original dwellings that display the unique Naxi style.
There is no fixed route, just follow your heart, and quietly feel the unique charm of this beautiful and less crowded ancient town.

The way to enjoy Shuhe Ancient Town is to stay for one night or more. Only then can you leave the hustle and bustle of the day, and at night, this place is peaceful.
Just wander around, and you'll see a variety of carefully arranged flowers everywhere on the streets, which, with the lighting, makes the place feel even more romantic.
There are guesthouses in every alley, and now it's the off-season, so you can casually chat with the guesthouse owners. We were just tired from walking when we found a beautiful courtyard. While taking pictures at the entrance, the owner said we could go in to take pictures, so...

The design and layout of Shuhe Ancient Town is a sister piece to the Lijiang Ancient City.
The town faces east with its back to the west, sheltered from the wind and basking in the sun, overlooking the Jade Dragon to the north, Wenbi to the south, and Xiangshan to the east. Despite the passage of time, the ancient appearance remains intact, with the village and the wilderness blending seamlessly, creating an ecologically beautiful landscape and forming a unique scenery of 'ancient paths, spring water, and households'.
Behind the village, the forest is an extension of the southern Jade Dragon Mountain, with beautiful shapes and lush vegetation. At the foot of the mountain in Baisha Town, there is Phoenix Mountain, the birthplace of the Mu family of Lijiang. As the shape of the mountain changes towards Shuhe, it presents an auspicious appearance. Geomancers call it 'the place where the cinnabar phoenix embraces the book', predicting a flourishing and prosperous culture.
In April, flowers bloom everywhere in Shuhe Ancient Town, creating a scenery where every step is accompanied by flowers. Come and take a stroll here when you have the time!

Shuhe, in the Naxi language, is called 'Shaowu'. Shuhe Ancient Town, also known as Longquan Village, is named after the mountain behind the village, Jubaoshan, which resembles a piled peak. The name of the village comes from the mountain, and over time it has evolved to mean 'the village under the high peak'. At the end of the Spring and Autumn Warring States period, the ancestors of the Naxi people migrated and settled here, making it one of the earliest Naxi settlements in the Lijiang basin.
By the Song and Yuan dynasties, it had already formed into a market town. The 'Yuan Yitongzhi' refers to it as 'Shuhe'. During the Ming dynasty, it was called 'Shuhe Courtyard'. After the Qing dynasty, it became known as 'Shuhe'. Today, it still retains the cultures of the Tea Horse Road, agriculture, Naxi people, and ecology.
The commercial atmosphere here is not as strong, making it more suitable for tourists to visit and enjoy.
