Singapore Zoo Tickets

First opened in 1973, Singapore Zoo covers 26 hectares and is one of the world’s best rainforest zoos. It’s home to over 2,800 animals from 300 species, including white tigers, Malayan tapirs, crocodiles, red pandas and orangutans. The biggest highlight is its open-concept design—no iron cages here, just natural barriers like rivers, trees and low fences that let animals live in habitats close to their wild homes. I loved how this design makes you feel like you’re walking through a real rainforest, not a zoo.

Opening hours: 8:30 AM–6:00 PM (admission ends at 5:00 PM) Address: 80 Mandai Lake Rd, Singapore 729826

It's best to arrive at the zoo in the morning, when the animals are most active. By 12:00 PM, they're all already hidden or asleep, making it difficult to spot them. Be sure to check the show times before your visit. We got to the seal show at 10:30 AM – it was very interesting (located near the entrance). There's also an elephant feeding and a pelican show. In the penguin room, you can see how they handle the penguins, and behind the glass opposite, you can see them playing with the dogs.

The zoo is small and exquisite, with sheltered areas throughout, so even though it was hot, walking around wasn't too uncomfortable. The lion couple sat comfortably together watching the visitors, appearing very relaxed. The shows within the zoo were also fantastic.

Singapore zoo were not amazing. It is pretty confusing how to walk. I downloaded the app yet i am confuse where to walk and which part i have walked. The map in the app consist of all five attractions which for first timer quite confusing. Night safari is very worthy to visit. Highly recommend. The walking trail is easy to follow. The view of walking trail and on tram can be very different. High recommended.

Singapore Zoo

Situated within the vibrant rainforests of northern Singapore, the Singapore Zoo is celebrated for its immersive, open-concept habitats. By replacing conventional cages with expansive enclosures defined by natural barriers and moats, the park offers a unique experience that brings visitors much closer to the wildlife.

The zoo serves as a cornerstone of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, a premier nature destination that also features the Night Safari, River Wonders, Bird Paradise, and the soon-to-be-launched Rainforest Wild Asia.

Top Things to do at the Singapore Zoo

Breakfast with Orangutans

The Orangutan Breakfast Experience is one of the Singapore Zoo’s signature activities. In the early morning, you can get up close to these gentle, intelligent primates—enjoying your own breakfast while watching them go about their natural routines. This encounter not only brings their friendly nature to life, it also deepens your understanding of conservation efforts. Because spaces are limited, advance reservations are recommended. Throughout the session, expert guides provide commentary that makes the experience both educational and fun.

Giraffe Feeding Experience

The giraffe feeding experience is a fan-favorite at the zoo! You'll get the chance to hand-feed these towering herbivores and witness their gentle, graceful nature up close. Located in the Equatorial Africa zone, the exhibit perfectly mimics the African savanna, making you feel like you've been transported to a whole new world. Beyond just feeding, you'll also learn about giraffe habits and conservation efforts. It’s a fantastic activity for all ages—especially families with kids—that adds an extra layer of fun to your zoo adventure.

Fragile Forest

Step into the Fragile Forest, a vast domed greenhouse within the park that recreates a tropical rainforest ecosystem. Here, you can marvel at rare lemurs, giant butterflies, and a variety of tropical insects. More than a showcase of biodiversity, it also helps visitors appreciate the importance of conservation. As you wander its paths, you’ll feel fully immersed in nature, experiencing a serenity and beauty worlds apart from the city. It’s a popular spot for photography and family outings.

Animal Show

Signature shows like Splash Safari and the Animal Friends Show are highlights at the Singapore Zoo, blending animals’ natural behaviors with professional training to showcase their intelligence and skills. These performances aren’t just entertaining—they’re educational, too, helping visitors learn about different species’ daily habits and conservation efforts. Showtimes are set, so you can plan your visit around the schedule and make the most of your day at the zoo.

Asian Elephant Exhibit

The Asian Elephant exhibit offers a close-up look at the herd’s daily life, where visitors can watch their social interactions and see keepers in action during feeding time. Detailed interpretive displays introduce the elephants’ ecology, behaviors, and the conservation challenges they face. The Asian Elephant area also features live presentations and educational programs that help you get to know these gentle giants even better—making it one of the zoo’s must-see highlights.

Children's Rainforest World (Rainforest KidzWorld)

Children’s Rainforest World is specially designed for kids, featuring a playground, an animal feeding area, and a mini zoo. Interactive activities let little ones get up close to gentle small animals and learn to respect and care for all living things. The water play facilities are a big hit too, offering the perfect place to cool off on hot days. This area is a must-visit for family trips, where both kids and parents will have a great time.

Reptile Kingdom (RepTopia)

Reptile Kingdom showcases a wide array of reptiles—from snakes and lizards to turtles and tortoises. The exhibits are thoughtfully designed to balance education with discovery, helping visitors understand the unique ecology of cold-blooded animals and the vital roles they play in the wild. Expert commentary and interactive displays make the visit even more engaging, making this a must-visit for reptile lovers and anyone interested in science education.

What to Eat Near Singapore Zoo

Ah Meng Restaurant

Named after the zoo’s late, beloved orangutan, Ah Meng, this restaurant is perfectly situated in the heart of the park, right next to the first tram station. Ah Meng Restaurant operates as a cafeteria-style eatery, serving up a delicious mix of Asian and Western favorites, including Hainanese chicken rice, laksa, chicken cutlet rice, and refreshing fruit juices. They also offer vegetarian options and use eco-friendly tableware. The dining area is bright and spacious, with some seats offering a lovely view of the park’s pathways—making it the perfect spot to recharge halfway through your adventure. The restaurant is open daily until the evening, but since the zoo can get quite busy, we recommend heading over a bit early or avoiding the peak lunch rush to skip the lines!

Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant

Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant sits at the far end of the park toward the Bird Park side, featuring lush, rainforest-inspired decor and a kids’ play area. The menu spans curry chicken rice, pasta, burgers, and freshly squeezed juices, with generous portions and well-balanced flavors. There are also buffet stations—perfect for the whole family to enjoy after hours of exploring. Ulu Ulu opens daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM; consider planning your meal before or after a visit to the Bird Park or the Night Safari. It’s easy to get to and pleasantly peaceful.

It was super convenient to walk to the zoo, and the room was really spacious. The rooftop pool was also a nice touch. The open-plan lobby was unique and special, and the cross-breeze kept it cool. The only downside was that it was a bit tricky to get a taxi; we had to ask the front desk to call one for us when we left, which took about 15 minutes.

Rainforest King
I had a very pleasant stay at Mandai Resort. From the moment I arrived, the staff were warm, polite, and welcoming. After a long walk, being served a drink at the lobby was such a thoughtful touch — it really helped me relax right away. One of the highlights was definitely the infinity pool overlooking the river. The view was calm and refreshing, making it a perfect spot to unwind and just take in the surroundings. The room itself felt very grounded and environmentally conscious, with a design that blends naturally with the surroundings. It gave a peaceful, down-to-earth vibe that made the stay even more enjoyable. What I appreciated most was the convenience — being able to head straight back to the hotel to rest after a long evening at the Night Safari was truly the best part. It made the whole experience seamless and relaxing. Overall, a wonderful stay and I would definitely return.

FAQs about Singapore Zoo

  • Is Singapore Zoo worth visiting for Australian tourists?

Absolutely — Singapore Zoo is widely regarded as one of the world's best zoos and is a highlight of any Singapore holiday. Its open-concept design, diverse range of animals (including free-ranging orangutans, Malayan tigers, and pygmy hippos), immersive experiences like the Jungle Breakfast with Wildlife, and its setting within the lush Mandai rainforest make it exceptional value. For Australian travellers, it offers a wildlife experience unlike anything found at home, with species from across Asia and Africa in naturalistic habitats. Most visitors recommend allocating a full day (5–7 hours) to do it justice.
  • Which zoo is better in Singapore — Singapore Zoo or Bird Paradise?

Both are outstanding, and the good news is they are located side by side at Mandai Wildlife Reserve, making it easy to visit both. Singapore Zoo is the better choice for a broad wildlife experience with mammals, reptiles, and primates in open naturalistic enclosures, and is especially popular with families. Bird Paradise is Asia's largest bird park and is ideal for bird enthusiasts, featuring over 400 species across eight immersive walk-through aviaries. Many visitors opt for the Mandai Destination Pass to experience both parks (and Night Safari and River Wonders) across multiple days for the best overall value.
  • Is the tram at Singapore Zoo free of charge?

No, the tram at Singapore Zoo is not free — it is a paid add-on experience. The guided tram ride takes visitors on a narrated circuit of the park's major zones and is a convenient way to get an overview, particularly for first-time visitors, families with young children, or those with limited mobility. It does not cover every section of the zoo, so most visitors combine a tram ride with walking to explore all areas fully. It is advisable to check the current tram fare on the official Mandai website or when purchasing tickets.
  • What is Singapore Zoo's ranking in the world?

Singapore Zoo is consistently ranked among the top zoos in the world. It has frequently appeared in global rankings as one of the best zoos, often cited in publications and travel platforms as a top-five zoo worldwide. Its reputation is built on its pioneering open-concept design (introduced when it opened in 1973), its high standards of animal welfare, its conservation programmes, and the quality of visitor experiences on offer. The broader Mandai Wildlife Reserve, which includes Night Safari — the world's first nocturnal wildlife park — further cements Singapore's status as a world-leading wildlife destination.
  • How much time do you need at Singapore Zoo?

Most visitors recommend spending a full day at Singapore Zoo — ideally between five and seven hours. The zoo covers a large area with numerous zones, animal enclosures, live shows, and feeding sessions. If you plan to attend the Jungle Breakfast with Wildlife in the morning, factor in an additional hour before the general park opens. To avoid the afternoon heat and crowds, arriving at opening time (8:30 AM) is strongly recommended. If you are visiting multiple Mandai parks on the same day (e.g., Singapore Zoo followed by River Wonders), plan for a long day or split your visits across two days.
