Songkran Festival is traditionally celebrated from April 13 to 16 each year, with public holidays often extending the festivities by 1–2 days. The exact dates rarely change, but regional variations may exist (e.g., some northern provinces like Chiang Mai start celebrations 1–2 days earlier).

  • Key Note: For travel planning, book flights, hotels, and transportation 2–3 months in advance—prices surge by 50–100% during Songkran, and popular accommodations sell out quickly.
  • Upcoming Dates: 2026 Songkran will follow the standard April 13–16 schedule (confirm with Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism 1 month prior for any adjustments).

The Origins and Meaning of Songkran Festival

The Origins and Meaning of Songkran

People celebrate water festival in Bangkok, Thailand (6 ...

The Thai Water Festival, also known as Songkran, is the most significant celebration of the traditional Thai New Year. Its origins are rooted in a fascinating legend involving the seven "Songkran Goddesses." According to myth, their father was beheaded after losing a wager with a Hindu deity. However, his severed head possessed such immense power that if it ever touched the ground, it would cause a global drought. To prevent this catastrophe, his seven daughters took turns carrying and guarding their father’s head. Interestingly, the festival takes on a different name each year based on the day of the week it falls on, corresponding to the specific Goddess in charge. For instance, if Songkran falls on a Friday, it is named Kimina.

Songkran Festival Symbolism and Traditions

Songkran symbolizes the arrival of the New Year, the washing away of misfortune, and the welcoming of blessings. During these days, people splash water on one another—regardless of whether they are strangers or friends—as a gesture of "cleansing" the past year's bad luck.

Beyond the iconic "water fights," the festival is deeply spiritual and includes several traditional highlights:

  • Merit-making: Offering food to monks and visiting temples.
  • Releasing Animals: Freeing birds or fish as a sign of compassion.
  • Cultural Performances: Traditional music and folk dance displays.

While similar water festivals are celebrated in neighboring countries such as Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia, Thailand’s Songkran remains the most world-renowned celebration of them all.

While Songkran is a time of joy and celebration, it is essential to respect local customs and safety laws. To ensure everyone has a great time, please keep the following rules in mind:

  1. Dress Code: No Revealing Clothing: Avoid wearing overly revealing clothes. Please note that wearing only a bikini is prohibited in public areas. Opt for quick-dry t-shirts and shorts instead to respect local sensibilities.
  2. Alcohol Restrictions: For public safety, the sale of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited within and around the major festival celebration zones.
  3. No High-Pressure Water Guns: The use of high-pressure water cannons or modified water guns is illegal as they can cause serious injury. Only standard water guns, buckets, and bowls are allowed.
  4. Use Clean Water Only: It is strictly forbidden to splash dirty or stagnant water on others. Use only clean water (and ideally room temperature or cold) to ensure the health and safety of all participants.
  5. Aiming Restrictions: Protect the Face: Do not splash water directly at a person's head or face. Aim for the torso and shoulders to avoid causing discomfort or accidents.
  6. Protected Groups (Do Not Splash): To show respect and maintain safety, you must not splash water on the following groups: Monks, The Elderly, Infants and Small Children, The Sick/Infirm, Police Officers and Emergency Personnel on duty.
