The Pipa Old Inn is an ideal spot for travelers wanting to discover the city. Visitors to Datong will find that the Pipa Old Inn is a fantastic accommodation choice. With Huayan Monastery, Shanhua Monastery and Fahua Temple all within a short distance, there is no shortage of things to do in the area. When guests have some time on their hands they can make use of the onsite facilities. This Datong hotel provides parking on site. If you demand a high level of service, our guests have indicated that this hotel has excellent standards. This hotel is particularly popular with those traveling with families.

"The location is absolutely fantastic, right in the heart of the ancient city. For dining: Xi Jin Dao is downstairs, Fenglin Pavilion is a 10-minute walk, and Long Juxiang offers delivery directly to your phone. Every time we took a taxi back to the inn, we'd get off at Huayan Hotel and walk two minutes. The popular Heshengcai is a 10-minute walk (though the taste was just so-so, and none of the pastries even had an ingredient list). For sights: Huayan Temple is a 5-minute walk. I visited Shanhua Temple at night, which was about a 15-minute walk. During the May Day holiday, there were only about 10 people in the entire temple at night, so we could enjoy a peaceful visit. On the way back and forth, we also saw the city wall's light show and passed through a lantern festival. Rumeng Datong (Dreams of Datong) was also within walking distance. Service was great too. On our last day, we had to leave for the train station at 7:30 AM, and the owner even packed breakfast for us. The lamb offal soup with vermicelli every morning was delicious. The furniture is all elm wood. The loft family room was perfect for our family of three. The only downsides were that the room rate was expensive during May Day, and the bathroom design was a bit impractical."

"The hotel looks very luxurious, and the breakfast restaurant is beautiful with a fountain. However, for such great facilities, I didn't expect the floors to be so thin. I could hear people walking upstairs all night – it was so noisy! The service was also really subpar, especially in the breakfast restaurant. I'm not sure if the staff are shared with Yungang. Anyway, the staff at the noodle and egg station, particularly the one furthest from the entrance to the restaurant, were awful. They were off-duty during breakfast, with only one person frying eggs while the noodle chef was nowhere to be found. They eventually showed up much later. With so many guests, their movements were incredibly slow. Even the staff clearing tables were much quicker than them. Honestly, it was off-putting and made me lose my appetite. The breakfast food was also terrible and completely didn't match the hotel's supposed luxury. Having traveled extensively, I usually find that upscale hotels offer better food than average ones, but Wyndham really reset my expectations. I felt like I was eating pig feed. You don't even need me to tell you; just look at how much food guests left on their tables, uneaten. That alone tells you how bad it was – good food wouldn't be left untouched. I even saw a whole bowl of noodles left on a table after guests had left. We genuinely didn't want to waste food; it was just genuinely awful. I truly felt like I was eating pig feed. They didn't treat us like people, showed no respect for us, and seemed to think anything edible was fine, never considering the taste."

"Ive just left the Inn and on the train to the next destination. I wish I could stay longer as this was such a pleasant stay. The boss lady was so nice. I booked just a basic room but got upgraded to almost a studio flat with separate bedroom in the mezzanine and lounge downstairs. Everytime I come back from sightseeing, all hot tired, the boss lady gave me a bowl of delicious melons. It was sweet and juicy. The best melons I have had. The second time she also gave me bananas. It was so much needed. The hotel is in the perfect location. Thank you for a wonderful stay. 1. From Datongnan station there are buses 608 or 61 which takes you directly to Huayansi stop, less than 1min from the hotel. However, the hotel frontage is a jewelry shop, I didn't know so ended up walking up/down the street for 10mins before the boss lady realised and came out to tell me I have arrived. 2. If you want to go to Yungang Grottoes. From the same bus stop take bus 38, then change to bus 3 to get to the Grottoes. Journey time about an hour in total. And cost 4RMB (2RMB per bus). However, you have to set up some kind of public travel app from Wechat to get the QR code to pay the bus fare. I didn't know this. Fortunately, some nice people helped pay my fare, then another lovely girl helped set up the app enabling me to use the bus from then as when I arrived and took the bus from the train station to hotel Wechatpay didn't work. Fortunately the driver let me ride for free as I guess he realised Im foreign and don't have this app. Only when I took the bus to Yungang Grottoes, the girl told me I need to set up the travel app etc and helped me set it up. 3. The hotel is also right opposite to the Huayan temple. A beautiful ancient temple. Deffo can't be missed. I will be uploading more photos and videos of my stay in Datong and travels in China on my YouTube channels once I'm back in UK. Check out my YouTube channels TheTravelDiary and goody2shoos for more information. Happy travels."

"The hotel staff were incredibly accommodating. They upgraded us to a family room, and the breakfast spread was fantastic, offering a great mix of local Shanxi specialties and Western options. We wanted to extend our stay in the same room, but it wasn't available. However, the lobby staff went above and beyond to arrange a king-size room for us. While it was a bit pricier, it felt completely worth it. The TV was a little small, but the rewind function was a great bonus, allowing us to catch up on shows."

"Had a fantastic stay! We booked the 'sky-light room,' which was very quiet, allowing us to sleep soundly until morning. The front desk attendant was incredibly warm and helpful; she brought ice packs for my wife's sprained ankle and even lent us a charging cable. The guesthouse is conveniently located directly across from the old town city wall entrance, where you can climb up for free to enjoy panoramic views of the ancient city."

"The hotel's facilities are excellent. The lobby is grand and elegant, and the rooms are spacious with good hygiene. The location is very convenient for tourists; it's only about a ten to twelve-minute walk to the Datong Ancient City direct shuttle bus stop. In the evenings, you can walk through the ancient city and past the Heyang Gate to reach the Sipaifang commercial food street, which is always bustling. It's so convenient and comfortable to enjoy the beautiful ancient city views and explore the Dongnanyi Historical and Cultural Pedestrian Street. I highly recommend this hotel! 👍"

"I was very satisfied with this guesthouse. The community is new, lively yet quiet. Right outside the complex is Dongnan Yi, but it's very peaceful inside. The room is large, the windows are big, and it's clean. The service gets full marks – they offer station transfers and the breakfast is plentiful. The facilities are comprehensive, even including video memberships so you can watch VIP TV series and variety shows freely. The shower has great water pressure. The bed is firmer than other hotels, which I prefer as it's good for my back. I originally planned to book for two nights to try it out, but when I wanted to extend my stay, it was already fully booked. I tried other places at the same price point, but I kept thinking about how good this one was. I hope they continue to maintain their high quality, because my mom said she wants to stay here again next time, haha."

"This hotel opened about half a year ago, and thankfully, it doesn't have that 'new hotel smell'. Instead, it's clean, tidy, and comfortable, with excellent facilities all around. Parking is convenient, and there's a beautifully designed small garden on the third floor that's quite refreshing. When checking out, the front desk attendant asked if I had any issues during my stay. I honestly told her that the water temperature was a bit inconsistent. I wanted to give feedback so the hotel could address the problem promptly and operate even better. However, it seemed like her question was just a formality; she didn't react at all and was casually chatting with a colleague about something else. I think the staff's service etiquette definitely needs improvement."

"This was my first trip to Datong, and I booked three consecutive nights (July 9th-July 12th) at the Meijing Heyang Hotel. I chose it primarily because of its proximity to the ancient city. After checking in, I realized just how close it was – right next to the East Gate (Heyang Gate) of the ancient city, making access incredibly convenient. On the 9th, while I was still touring Yanmenguan, I received a confirmation call from the hotel, asking about the number of guests and any special requests, which felt very professional. Upon checking in, the room was comfortable, the bath towels were individually packed in special bags, and to my surprise, the pillows were buckwheat – a really pleasant touch. The breakfast was very homestyle; the milk was of excellent quality, forming a skin on top, and there was fermented bean curd, which was delicious. During my stay, I often saw Manager Ren on duty in the lobby. He would ask for our feedback on our stay and our experiences exploring, then enthusiastically offer suggestions, which was truly thoughtful. I've already returned to Beijing after my trip, but next time I visit Datong, I'll definitely choose Meijing Heyang again."
