This guesthouse seems to be run by Chinese owners, which is nice. My room was right by the entrance. After checking in at the front desk, I couldn't find it until I turned around... it felt a bit like sleeping in a guardhouse. The soundproofing isn't great either. Because of its peculiar location, it gets very noisy in the mornings. And the room next door seems to be a staff office, which also generates a lot of noise. However, the room was warm and clean, perfect for a night's sleep, and the price was excellent. The only downside is that it didn't have a private bathroom. The common areas were clean and there was even coffee available, which was a pleasant touch.

This hotel was amazing. Super clean and cozy. The room was so big and spacious. Can sleep up to 5 people. Just that the hotel has no elevator, only 2 floors. But still never disappoints me. Highly recommended!!!!!

Pros: The price is quite reasonable, over 700 for a night with three beds. You can grab toothbrushes and toothpaste from a small table next to the front desk. There's a convenience store right next to the hotel, which is handy for buying things. Although the breakfast area is small, the breakfast itself is actually pretty good, and the restaurant staff are quite friendly. They also write little tips on a blackboard in the lobby. Cons: The room hygiene needs improvement; only a superficial cleaning was done. When we pushed the two beds together, there were quite a lot of crumbs underneath. Another issue was the front desk service. We booked four rooms with friends. We chose the 7 PM slot for dinner first, but then when the other three rooms tried to book the 7 PM slot, they were told it was full. However, when we had breakfast the next day, the restaurant was only about 40% occupied.

It's a bit far from Otaru Station, about a 7-10 minute walk. It's good value for money. Check-in was entirely self-service, and I didn't see a single staff member (I saw one shoveling snow in the morning, but I don't know if that counts). I don't know about the other rooms, but my room had two problems: the water heater was intermittently hot, and the bed by the window was very cold because the cold air from outside would seep in, so I had to use a lot of clothes to block it.

The main building for check-in is really close to JR station. Just exit, go straight, turn left after you see Lawson, and then another left at the intersection. It's about 400 meters. The hotel is spread out in several areas. After check-in, the staff told us our villa was another 10-minute walk away. Luckily, there's a shuttle service both ways. It meant we were quite a distance from the onsen, but that was okay since we'd already had plenty of hot spring baths on our trip. I was pleasantly surprised by the villa's location – it was fantastic! Tucked away in an alley near the shopping street along the canal. The space was huge and well-equipped, and having an entire standalone villa was incredibly comfortable. I didn't encounter any of the issues other reviewers mentioned, so I'm very satisfied!

Room: The room was spacious with a vintage decor. The twin beds in the double room were also quite large and very clean. We had a great view of the canal from the window. Location: It's about an 800-meter walk from JR Otaru Station, or a taxi ride costs around 800 yen. I'd recommend taking a taxi when it's snowing. The seaside is just 400 meters away. Facilities: You can pick up various samples on the first floor of the lobby. Breakfast: The breakfast was incredibly rich and delicious! The sashimi was super fresh, the fried dishes were excellent, and they even had Hokkaido milk.

I contacted the store manager Richard by email when I booked the room. We arrived in Otaru after 4:30 pm. With Richard's remote guidance, we adjusted our itinerary, gained time, visited Tengu Mountain efficiently and satisfactorily, and took the last bus to the B&B. At that time, I had already had a good impression of Shukujin Villa before I checked in. After arriving, the room was clean and tidy, the tatami mattress was soft and comfortable, and the living room was bright and spacious, which allowed us to have a comfortable space to chat and drink tea. This made me fully realize how good it is to travel with multiple people and rent a villa! Moreover, each bedroom is equipped with an independent bathroom, which is very rare and an important consideration for me to compare prices when booking a room. It is especially important for our family with children. If I go to Otaru again, this will be the only choice for me and my friends.

Excellent value for money, and the room was very spacious, with ample room for luggage. The separate sink, toilet, and shower/bath setup was incredibly convenient to use. Everything was spotlessly clean, and the service was thoughtful and attentive. We could communicate any questions via WeChat, and their replies were always prompt and effective. The location is perfect, situated between Otaru Station and the main attractions. It's a convenient six-minute walk to Otaru Station, and walking six minutes in the opposite direction takes you directly to the Otaru Canal and Art Village, making it ideal for sightseeing.

Just a 1-minute walk to the Otaru Canal! Excellent access to tourist spots. The top floor features an open-air bath and sauna with a view of Ishikari Bay. Rooftop bar inspired by the Otaru lighthouse. Enjoy the bounty of Hokkaido at breakfast in a spacious restaurant facing the courtyard.

GGuest User 2026.04.23
The hotel is quite new and the rooms are a decent size. The facilities are standard and have everything you need, with no obvious issues. The location is great, right by the canal and shopping street, though a bit far from the station. There's a fantastic curry restaurant nearby, probably the best in Otaru. However, my room had intermittent noise while I was trying to sleep, which made it hard to fall asleep. That's a big minus.

GGuest UserThis was the best hotel of our trip. From check-in to check-out, we felt the warmth and saw the smiles of the staff throughout. The included dinner was delicious and exquisite. The set breakfast was also pretty good. The hotel offers a variety of entertainment activities and facilities, so you won't get bored at all, and the environment is beautiful. The only downside is that the soundproofing isn't great; you can hear doors opening and closing from upstairs and next door.

GGuest UserWe booked the best room on the top floor and spent 7 nights at this high end and extremely expensive ryokan/hotel. Here are the pros and cons: PROS: The food is amazing in terms of presentation, gastronomy and service. The place is immaculately clean. The views a fantastic! We got comfortable Yukatas and overall the place has a very nice traditional vibe.  CONS: They seem to be completely inapt in hosting people who don’t speak Japanese. No one speaks English at this place. None at all! They write that we can “press 9 and call the reception”, but once you do it – you can’t have any conversation with anyone at all. Even when you get down in person to the reception, no one can really communicate with you, even with Google Translate.  They exhibit zero flexibility. The approach is – it’s our way or the highway. All is extremely polite, but no left, no right! Can we have a laundry service arranged? The answer is “no!”. Can we communicate with you via WhatsApp or email? – No! Can we come later to breakfast? No. Can we have dinner at a later time, since we can’t come earlier just this one day? No! Basically, if you want to sleep a bit later during your vacation – forget it! Either show up at 8 or 8:30 am for breakfast, or go hungry! Can we buy your Yukata? – No! Also, we were asked to indicate every day what time we intend to go out – something that adds pressure, as  on vacation one may want to improvise, rather than plan ahead their outings.  Given that this place charges exuberant prices, the lack of the most basic hospitality features (communication, laundry, customer-focused flexibility) is astounding! We now staying at another Ryokan, 90 minutes away and see that everyone can speak some English and the place is much more focused on the needs of a foreign traveler, as opposed on preserving the holy rigidity of an existent system.

GGuest UserThe hotel's location is superb, within walking distance to Otaru Canal and Sankaku Market. The hotel design is elegant and refined, with a vintage touch. The 5-person loft room feels spacious. The bathroom has a separate wet and dry area. The restaurant windows are adorned with charming Otaru glass elements. I really enjoyed the hotel's happy hour wine tasting, and I loved spending a relaxing time in the beautiful bar.

GGuest UserAbout a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station. If you're heading to Mount Tengu, there's a bus stop (pictured in image 2) just outside the hotel exit, on the way to Otaru Station, where you can catch a bus – it's very convenient. The view from the window is quite nice (pictured in image 1). It's also very easy to walk to the Otaru Canal and the seaside. Breakfast is 2600 yen per day, and it's quite a spread.

VverazheConveniently located within a 10-minute walk to Otaru Station and the canal. There's also a direct bus to Mount Tengu right outside the hotel. The hotel has a bit of a vintage feel, and the rooms are quite old-fashioned in style. The window view from the top floor restaurant is truly beautiful. The 11th floor offers a Western-style breakfast, while the 3rd floor has Japanese set meals, so you can choose what you prefer. There's also a large public bath on the 3rd floor for soaking.

GGuest UserDo NOT choose this hotel for skiing!! Unless it's half the price during the same period, I'll never pick this place again. Prioritize other hotels with shuttle buses to Otaru Station. First, the location: This is Otaru-Chikko Station, two stops away from Otaru Station. The nearest convenience store is a 10-minute walk outside. Although there's a mall downstairs, its operating hours are 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM, which is the only time you can use the indoor passage. Most restaurants close around 7 PM, so it's really inconvenient to find food after skiing. Second, it's really old! The carpet in my room type was dirty, the bed was rock hard, and the pillow felt like a worn-out cotton pillow – small and flat. The worst part is that after sleeping, my head developed small bumps and became very itchy!! I don't know if it was fleas, but it made me scratch my head for the next few days. The hygiene is truly concerning. This hotel has no coin-operated washing machines or laundry rooms, only individual dry cleaning, which is very expensive. This is super inconvenient for skiers staying for an extended period. frankly, the only good thing about this hotel is the room size; everything else is a huge letdown.

AAnonymous UserIt was a cute boutique hotel with nice bonus facilities! Room is nicely designed and functional, with warm colors feel homey and comfy. Too bad we didn’t get the bath tub room as they were fully booked. Views from the window is mountaneous area, very nice! Bed and pillows are comfortable. Surface area for stuff are generous and practical, even enough space for sofa. Too bad they don’t give free coffee or at least instant coffee, only tea. No onsen. Music box night was awesome! Feels like a romantic dinner setting, but the smell of lamp oil was too much, gave me headache so I couldn’t stay for long, even though I would love to support the hotels and all of the polite and friendly staff by dining there. Staff are wonderful, smiles and polite and professional! During this trip we felt like Japanese staff in general are becoming a bit cold toward tourists but this hotel’s staff are not like that! We appreciate you guys. Thank you!

GGuest UserThis apartment offers a practical and comfortable stay, especially for those looking to explore Otaru on foot. We appreciated the basic utensils and cutlery provided, making it easy to prepare simple meals. The thoughtful inclusion of toothbrushes and toothpaste was a nice touch, and the microwave was handy for quick reheats. Comfort is well-addressed with one air-conditioner and a heater, ensuring a pleasant temperature regardless of the weather. The washing machine was a huge convenience, and we had options for drying clothes either on the hanger stand inside the room or on the balcony. The location is a major highlight, being within easy walking distance to both Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street. We also found it convenient to have a Lawson and various eateries nearby, though it's a good idea to check their opening hours as they can vary. Important Considerations for Your Stay While the location is excellent, it's important to note that the road leading to the building is steep. This could be particularly challenging if you're driving, and we would not advise driving during winter due to the road conditions. For those with a car, there are two parking areas available. The closer one has three slots, while a slightly further option offers approximately 12 slots. Keep this in mind, especially if you prioritize a closer parking spot.
