Chongqing Weather: An Introduction

Chongqing stays warm for most of the year, though it can be punishing for two months. July and August see average highs of 33 to 34°C, with humidity that makes it feel even hotter; in recent years, the city has even recorded temperatures above 42°C. Unless you’re planning to escape to the mountains, it’s best to avoid these two months. Autumn is the absolute best time to visit, winter is mild but damp, and sunshine is in short supply throughout most of the year.
- The best times to visit: late September through November, or March to May
- Hottest months: July and August, when temperatures soar above 42°C
- Coldest: January, with an average of 8.1°C, though snow is a rare sight
- Wettest month: June, with about 212 mm of rainfall
- Humidity and light: 70 to 84 percent year-round, with about 983 hours of sunshine to soak up each year
- Fog: expect it about 100 days a year, primarily from November through February
The Best Time to Visit Chongqing: A Month-by-Month Weather Guide
Keep two patterns in mind as you plan: the city gets progressively hotter and rainier from March through August, then cools down sharply in October and November—and don't let the sunshine stats fool you, as they rarely tell the full story of how pleasant a month will actually be.
January in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 6°C to 10°C Feels like: 4°C to 8°C | 🌧️ 20mm over 9 days 🌫️ Dense river fog | ☀️ 1-2 hours daily 🌇 6:10pm sunsets |
January is Chongqing's coldest month, yet temperatures almost never fall below freezing in the city itself. This is peak season for Chongqing's famous fog: thick mist rolls off the Yangtze and Jialing rivers and can swallow the skyscrapers along the banks until late morning, giving the city its long-standing nickname of the Fog Capital.
The cold here is a damp, penetrating chill rather than a dry freeze, so buildings without central heating often feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Crowds are at their lightest of the year, which means short queues for the Yangtze River Cableway, empty lanes in Ciqikou Old Town, and a front-row seat for the night lights of Hongya Cave.
Thermal base layers and a waterproof shell matter more than a heavy coat in Chongqing's damp cold, and shoes with grip are essential for the city's stone staircases when they are wet. Fog can delay river cruises and cableway rides, so keep morning plans flexible. A bubbling hot pot is the local answer to January weather, and indoor stops such as the Three Gorges Museum and the wartime sites of Shapingba fill a foggy afternoon perfectly.
February in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 7°C to 12°C Feels like: 5°C to 10°C | 🌧️ 22mm over 9 days 🌦️ First spring drizzle | ☀️ 2 hours daily 🌇 6:35pm sunsets |
February loosens winter's grip only slightly, with bright, mild afternoons appearing more often toward the end of the month. Chinese New Year frequently falls in February, when the whole city turns red with lanterns: Hongya Cave glows for the holiday, Jiefangbei fills with shoppers, and the Yangtze embankments host fireworks.
Spring announcements arrive quietly - plum blossoms open in Eling Park, early camellias appear on the Nanshan hills, and the tea houses around Ciqikou come back to life. The holiday also reshuffles the city: many family-run hot pot restaurants and small noodle shops close for up to a week, while museums and shopping districts stay open.
If you travel during Chinese New Year, book hotels and intercity trains weeks ahead, and expect some favourite restaurants to be shut for the holiday. The evening lights along the two rivers are the highlight of a February visit, so plan a night walk from Chaotianmen to Hongya Cave. Fog still rules the mornings, and the mist usually lifts by early afternoon, making later starts the smarter choice.
March in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 11°C to 17°C Feels like: 9°C to 15°C | 🌧️ 37mm over 12 days 🌦️ Light night rain | ☀️ 2-3 hours daily 🌇 7:00pm sunsets |
March is Chongqing's gentlest month: temperatures climb into the mid-teens, the hillsides turn green, and the city re-emerges from its foggy hibernation. This is the season of night rain, the drizzle that falls after dark and leaves the mornings washed and quiet - the very weather that inspired centuries of poetry about the mountains around the Sichuan Basin.
Blossom chasers head out of town: rapeseed fields turn the districts around Tongnan and Nanchuan gold, while peach and cherry blossom line the slopes of Nanshan. Warmer days make the old town of Ciqikou, the riverside boardwalks and the slow cableway ride across the Yangtze genuinely pleasant again.
Pack a compact umbrella and shoes with good grip, because March rain makes Chongqing's steep stone lanes and stairways slick. Mornings are the best time for viewpoint stops such as the Nanshan One Tree platform before the haze builds. If you have a spare day, the rapeseed fields and tea terraces outside the city are at their peak in mid to late March.
April in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 16°C to 22°C Feels like: 15°C to 21°C | 🌧️ 100mm over 15 days 🌧️ Steady spring rains | ☀️ 3-4 hours daily 🌇 7:25pm sunsets |
April is one of the wettest months of the Chongqing year, with soft, persistent rain that keeps the surrounding karst hills a deep, saturated green. Between showers the air is fresh and the temperature sits in the comfortable low twenties, ideal for walking the city's layered streets, bridges and escalators.
Qingming Festival in early April brings families out to the hills for tomb-sweeping and spring outings, and day trips to Wulong's Three Natural Bridges or the Dazu rock carvings are at their most atmospheric now, with mist drifting between the limestone arches and cliffs.
Waterproof footwear and a light rain jacket are worth the luggage space, because April showers arrive without much warning and the city's famous multi-level streets are unforgiving when wet. Rain is also a gift for photography: Hongya Cave's lights reflect off the wet pavements, and the rivers exchange their usual haze for moody low cloud.
May in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 20°C to 26°C Feels like: 21°C to 28°C | 🌧️ 145mm over 16 days ⛈️ Afternoon thunderstorms | ☀️ 4-5 hours daily 🌇 7:50pm sunsets |
May is the last genuinely comfortable month before Chongqing's furnace summer arrives. Days are warm and humid, greenery is at its densest, and the long evenings stretch past eight o'clock, perfect for night views from the Nanshan hills or a slow drink on a rooftop above the Jialing River.
The month also brings the year's first heavy thunderstorms, brief but dramatic downpours that clear the air and send water sheeting down the city's staircases. Beware the Labor Day holiday in the first week of May, when Hongya Cave, Ciqikou and the Yangtze River Cableway draw enormous domestic crowds.
Try to avoid the May 1 to 5 national holiday unless you enjoy queueing, and if you do visit then, book cableway and cruise tickets online and start sightseeing before 8am. Build your day around the afternoon storms: outdoor sights in the morning, museums, teahouses and hot pot restaurants while the rain passes, and river views after it clears.
June in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 23°C to 29°C Feels like: 25°C to 33°C | 🌧️ 190mm over 16 days 🌧️ Wettest month of the year | ☀️ 4-5 hours daily 🌇 8:00pm sunsets |
June is the rainiest month in Chongqing, and heat arrives with the humidity, so the city starts to feel like a steam room between downpours. Rain here tends to come in intense bursts rather than all-day drizzle, which means bright, sticky intervals alternate with sudden curtains of water.
The Dragon Boat Festival usually falls in June, and Chongqing celebrates it in style, with dragon boat races on the Jialing and Yangtze and zongzi - sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves - sold on every street corner. The rivers run high and fast, giving the confluence at Chaotianmen a powerful, muddy-brown energy.
Keep a rain jacket and a dry bag for electronics on you at all times, and check river conditions before booking a Yangtze cruise, as high water can cancel sailings. When the rain wins, retreat into the city's indoor layers: the Three Gorges Museum, the monorail gliding through the Liziba apartment block, and an air-conditioned hot pot restaurant are all classic rainy-day Chongqing.
July in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 26°C to 34°C Feels like: 30°C to 40°C | 🌧️ 150mm over 12 days ⛈️ Sudden violent storms | ☀️ 5-6 hours daily 🌇 7:55pm sunsets |
July is when Chongqing lives up to its nickname as one of China's furnace cities. Daytime highs sit in the mid-thirties, heat waves push past 38°C, and nights often stay above 28°C with humidity that makes the air feel thick enough to lean on.
Locals deal with it the traditional way: by leaving. Families head for the high country at Jinfo Mountain in Nanchuan or Fairy Mountain in Wulong, where temperatures drop by ten degrees or more. In the city, life shifts to the evening, when the riverside promenades, night markets and the lit-up skyline along Hongya Cave finally become bearable.
Start any walking route before 8am and plan a long indoor break between noon and 4pm - the metro and the monorail are reliably air-conditioned escapes. Drink far more water than you think you need, watch for heatstroke, and cool down with local iced desserts such as bingfen and liangxia. If the heat overwhelms you, book a night or two in the Wulong or Jinfo mountains.
August in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 26°C to 34°C Feels like: 30°C to 41°C | 🌧️ 125mm over 11 days 🌩️ Brief intense storms | ☀️ 6 hours daily 🌇 7:30pm sunsets |
August is statistically the hottest month in Chongqing, and heat waves can settle over the basin for two or three weeks without a break. The combination of high temperatures, still air and near-saturated humidity is why the city's summer is often described as a sauna rather than a furnace.
Paradoxically, August also delivers some of the clearest skies of the year, with brilliant blue afternoons that show the skyline at its sharpest - though you will want to admire them from an air-conditioned window. The mountains remain the great escape, and cooler evenings on the Nanshan hills above the Yangtze draw crowds for the night panorama.
Treat midday like the middle of winter elsewhere and stay indoors: museums, malls and the underground metro are your allies between 11am and 4pm. Do your sightseeing at dawn and after sunset, when the two rivers and the floodlit Hongya Cave are at their most photogenic. Keep a flexible itinerary so you can move a mountain day trip forward if a heat wave peaks.
September in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 22°C to 28°C Feels like: 23°C to 31°C | 🌧️ 140mm over 13 days 🌧️ Autumn rains set in | ☀️ 4 hours daily 🌇 6:55pm sunsets |
September finally breaks the summer, usually in the second half of the month, when a cool front sweeps the basin and temperatures fall through the twenties. That relief comes with rain: the West China autumn rains arrive as steady, gentle drizzle that can last for days at a time.
The Mid-Autumn Festival often lands in September, filling bakeries with mooncakes and courtyards with lanterns. Clear festival nights are prized for moon viewing over the rivers, and the sweet scent of osmanthus begins to drift through the city's parks and older lanes.
Late September is one of the best-value windows of the Chongqing year: summer crowds have gone, temperatures are friendly, and hotel rates dip before the October holiday. Bring a light rain layer, keep an eye on the Mid-Autumn holiday dates, and save your river cruise or cableway ride for a morning when the clouds break.
October in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 17°C to 22°C Feels like: 16°C to 21°C | 🌧️ 95mm over 15 days 🌧️ Lingering autumn drizzle | ☀️ 3 hours daily 🌇 6:20pm sunsets |
October in Chongqing is mild, damp and quietly beautiful. The autumn rains continue on and off, humidity stays high, and the hills around the city shift from deep green to gold. Osmanthus is in full bloom this month, scenting parks, temple courtyards and older residential streets.
The National Day holiday in the first week of October is the busiest travel period of the Chinese year, and Chongqing - now one of the country's most popular destinations - feels it keenly at Hongya Cave, Ciqikou, Liziba and the Yangtze River Cableway. From mid-month onward the city returns to a much gentler rhythm.
Avoid the first week of October if crowds bother you, or plan that week around early mornings and lesser-known neighbourhoods rather than headline sights. Mid to late October is arguably the sweet spot for walking the city, and it is also when hot pot season properly begins - a steaming, numbing and spicy pot is the perfect rainy-day dinner.
November in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 12°C to 17°C Feels like: 10°C to 15°C | 🌧️ 50mm over 11 days 🌫️ River fog returns | ☀️ 2 hours daily 🌇 6:00pm sunsets |
November eases Chongqing into winter, with comfortable afternoons early in the month giving way to grey, chilly days by the end. Autumn colour peaks in the surrounding mountains - the red maples and golden ginkgo of Jinfo Mountain are the star attraction, with Nanshan offering a closer, easier taste of the same palette.
The fog returns to the rivers this month, restoring the moody, mist-wrapped atmosphere that made Chongqing famous in film and literature. Tourist numbers drop sharply after the October holiday, which means shorter queues, cheaper rates and a calmer version of the city's famous night scenery.
Layer up for chill, damp days and add a windproof jacket for river crossings and cableway rides, where the damp air cuts deepest. This is prime hot spring weather: the mineral springs at Beibei and Tongjing are an easy half-day trip and a beloved local ritual. Expect some morning fog delays to flights and river cruises, and keep plans loose accordingly.
December in Chongqing
| Temperature | Precipitation | Sunlight |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ 7°C to 11°C Feels like: 5°C to 9°C | 🌧️ 25mm over 10 days 🌫️ Heavy fog, rare sleet | ☀️ 1-2 hours daily 🌇 5:55pm sunsets |
December wraps Chongqing in its damp, grey winter. Snow is rare in the city itself - a fleeting flurry every few years is enough to make the news - but the surrounding mountains at Jinfo and Fairy Mountain regularly turn white, and both have ski slopes that fill with weekenders from the city.
December is also the foggiest stretch of the year, with mist hanging over the Yangtze and Jialing until midday and the skyline appearing and disappearing through the day. Indoors, the season is warm and convivial: hot pot restaurants are packed, hot springs steam in the hills, and Jiefangbei and the riverside districts light up for the year's end.
Pack thermal underwear, a waterproof outer layer and shoes that keep water out - Chongqing's winter damp is far more biting than the numbers suggest, and many buildings have little or no heating. That makes indoor attractions such as the Three Gorges Museum, Hongyan Revolution Memorial sites and the city's teahouses excellent fog-day options. If you want snow, plan a trip to Jinfo Mountain or Fairy Mountain rather than expecting it downtown.
The Best Time to Visit Chongqing: A Seasonal Weather Guide

Chongqing reinvents itself with every season—from steamy summer nights when the Yangtze glows with a million reflections to foggy winter mornings when the Mountain City disappears into the mist.
Springtime (March–May)
Waking Up in the Mountain City
Expect temperatures of 12-25°C (54-77°F) as the weather warms up quickly, accompanied by frequent drizzle. March can still feel raw and damp, while April brings sudden spikes in heat and the thick river fog that earned Chongqing its nickname, the "Fog Capital."
What to Wear
- Shoes with great grip for those steep stone stairways that get slippery in the rain
- Pack light layers—a tee under a thin jacket is perfect for handling those 15°C temperature swings throughout the day!
- A compact umbrella, because spring brings rain on about half the days
Spring Adventures
- Stroll through the historic lanes of Ciqikou Ancient Town before the crowds arrive
- Soar across the Yangtze River on the cableway as mist rolls gently over the banks
- Capture the dazzling night skyline from Eling Park or Nanshan One Tree
Pro tip
Spring is your final chance to comfortably tackle the city's endless hills and staircases. Set out by 7 a.m. to beat the crowds and the midday humidity, and be sure to save Hongyadong for after dark, when its iconic stilt houses come alive with light.
Summer (June–August)
The Heat of the Season
28-40°C (82-104°F) with punishing humidity that keeps nights above 30°C. Chongqing is one of China's "furnace cities," and August afternoons regularly push past 40°C.
What to Wear
- Breathable, quick-dry clothing—trust us, you’ll definitely be sweating through more than one shirt!
- Pack some lightweight, grippy shoes—perfect for tackling those hot, uneven stairways and slopes!
- Sun hat, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and a trusty refillable water bottle for those daytime walks
Beat the Heat
- Witness the magic of Hongyadong as its illuminated stilt houses cast a golden glow over the Jialing River
- Hop on Metro Line 2 and experience the thrill of passing through Liziba station, where the monorail actually glides right through an apartment building!
- Escape to the cool caves of Wulong's Three Natural Bridges or the forested slopes of Jinyun Mountain
Insider Tip
Follow the local rhythm: stay indoors from noon to 4pm, then venture out after 6pm once the heat fades and the city begins to glow. Trust us, hotpot is best enjoyed late at night with the air-conditioning cranked up high.
Fall (September–November)
The Golden Season
Enjoy crisp temperatures of 15-28°C (59-82°F) once the "autumn tiger" heat finally fades away. October brings the year's clearest skies and perfect weather for exploring the city on foot.
What to Wear
- Pack some comfy walking shoes—you'll need them for this city of hills and hidden staircases!
- A light jacket for those crisp mornings and breezy evenings by the river
- A camera and spare batteries to capture that crisp, golden autumn light
Autumn Must-Dos
- Trek through Jinfo Mountain's ancient bamboo forest as the leaves turn to gold
- Witness the Jialing and Yangtze rivers converge at Chaotianmen, where their waters flow together in two distinct colors
- Climb the historic Shibati stairway lanes for a fascinating glimpse into pre-war Chongqing
Heads-up
The National Day holiday (Oct 1-7) brings overwhelming crowds to Hongyadong, Ciqikou, and every cableway—try to avoid this week if you can! Mid-October to mid-November is the sweet spot, perfect for exploring before the winter fog rolls in.
Winter (December–February)
Misty, Damp, and Chilly
5-12°C (41-54°F), though the damp river air makes it feel much chillier than the thermometer reads. Winter is the foggiest season in a city that sees over 100 foggy days a year.
What to Wear
- Cozy thermal base layers worn under a windproof, water-resistant outer shell
- Pack shoes with solid grip—perfect for navigating those wet stone steps and steep alleys!
- Gloves and a scarf—indoor heating is a rarity, so you’ll rarely take them off!
Winter Adventures
- Unwind in a soothing hot spring at Ronghui or Tongjing after a long day of exploring on foot
- Head to Jinfo Mountain to experience the breathtaking snow and rime ice at the summit
- Warm up with a steaming bowl of malatang and a bubbling nine-grid hotpot
Pro Tip
Winter fog can completely obscure the skyline from the Raffles City or WFC observation decks, so it’s a good idea to check the forecast before you pay for a view. The upside? You’ll enjoy shorter lines, more affordable hotel rates, and the absolute best season for hotpot.

What Makes Chongqing's Weather So Unique
Four key elements define every journey here.
- The basin acts like a heat trap. Nestled at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Chongqing lies in a low-lying valley cradled by hills. With nowhere for the hot air to escape and mountains blocking the breeze, the city swelters. Locals famously dub it one of the Yangtze's "three furnaces"—a nickname that’s well-earned, not just a marketing gimmick.
- Humidity is a constant here. Relative humidity hovers between 70 and 84 percent every single month of the year. That’s exactly what turns a 34°C day into something that feels considerably more intense, and what makes winter feel even colder than the thermometer suggests.
- Sunshine is in short supply here—just about 983 hours a year, compared to over 1,700 in Beijing. In December, you’ll see an average of only 18 hours of sun for the entire month, which breaks down to less than 40 minutes a day. If you’re chasing blue skies and perfect photo ops, plan your trip for autumn, not winter.
- Fog is a feature here, not an accident. Expect it about 100 days a year, primarily from November through February. It’s why Chongqing is known as the "fog capital," and it truly transforms the river views and cable car rides.
The Best and Worst Times to Visit Chongqing

Chongqing offers two comfortable windows for travel, but there is one period you’ll want to avoid. Late September through November is the absolute best time of year to visit, with March through May coming in a close second. Meanwhile, July and August in the city are a true endurance test for anyone not planning to escape to the mountains. The tables below explain why, and also highlight the holiday periods that can make otherwise great months a bit more challenging.
The Worst Times to Visit Chongqing
Best Time | Why it works | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
Late September through November | The heat has finally broken, the humidity has dropped, the skies are clearing up, and the crowds start to thin out after the first week of October. | Almost everyone |
March to May | Mild temperatures, lush spring greenery, and perfect weather for a stroll | Travelers who prefer cooler weather, photographers |
December to February | Fewer crowds, budget-friendly stays, and peak season for foodies | Budget-friendly adventures, hotpot feasts, cozy teahouse visits, and indoor sightseeing |
The Worst Times to Visit Chongqing
Worst Time to Visit | The challenge behind it | Unless |
|---|---|---|
July and August | Days consistently hitting 35°C and up, thick humidity, and barely any relief once the sun goes down | You're off to the mountains, or perhaps you just really love soaking up the extreme heat |
Early October | National Day holiday: peak domestic travel season and the busiest crowds of the year. | Your travel dates are set in stone |
Early May | the bustling Labour Day holiday crowds | Same as above |
How Weather Shapes Your Chongqing Adventure

Chongqing is unique because most of its top attractions are either indoors or beautifully illuminated, meaning bad weather rarely ruins your plans. What the weather does affect is the timing of your visits—helping you decide whether a viewpoint or a river cruise is worth the trip on any given morning.
Attraction | Weather to match | Things to look out for |
|---|---|---|
Hongya Cave and the riverside views | No matter the weather after dark, the lights truly make the experience. | The fog adds a soft, dreamy touch to the river views, but those illuminated buildings still steal the show. |
Yangtze River cableway | Crisp, clear days in autumn and spring | Visibility is often limited by fog and haze, but the queues remain long regardless. |

Chongqing Summer: What 42°C Actually Feels Like

These numbers aren't just statistics—they tell a story of a city feeling the heat. In 2024, Shapingba saw a staggering 77 days where temperatures soared above 35°C, setting a national record for a provincial-level city. This included an intense stretch of 42 consecutive scorching days throughout August and September, with September alone contributing 25 of those sweltering days. By 2025, the city experienced its longest summer on record, lasting a full 186 days, while Wuxi County hit a historic high of 44.2°C on August 4th. The heat continued into July 2026, when Shapingba logged 20 consecutive high-temperature days—a new record for the month—and Beibei climbed to a blistering 42.3°C.
Here’s what that looks like in action:
- The nights stay sweltering. Average lows in July and August hover around 25°C, and during heatwaves, they often linger near 30°C. There’s just no cool window to catch your breath.
- Humidity only makes things feel more intense. When it hits 70 to 79 percent, the heat index climbs well above the actual air temperature, making it feel even hotter than the thermometer reads.
- The middle of the day is a total wash. Trying to go sightseeing between 11am and 5pm in July or August isn't just a challenge to overcome—it’s a bad plan.
- If you're visiting in the summer, head for the hills! Xiannü Mountain in Wulong, Heishan Valley, and Jinfo Mountain are all at higher altitudes, offering a much cooler escape from the city heat. It’s exactly how the locals beat the summer sun.
Chongqing in Winter: Why 10°C Feels Much Colder Than You’d Expect

Chongqing sits south of China's Qinling-Huaihe heating line, meaning there’s no municipal central heating to be found. Buildings here are designed for the heat rather than the cold, so indoor temperatures in unheated spaces often feel just as chilly as they do outside.
Add humidity levels above 80 percent, and that damp air starts pulling heat right away from your body—meaning a 10°C day often feels like 5°C or even colder. For travelers, this leads to two practical takeaways:
- Be sure to check how your hotel keeps things cozy! Mid-range and upscale spots typically use central or split air conditioning with a heating mode, while the real gems might even offer underfloor heating. Budget hotels and guesthouses usually stick to a wall-mounted unit. It’s always a smart move to ask before you book—and double-check that the heating is actually up and running!
- Air conditioning heat just hits differently than radiator heat. Since warm air rises, you might find your head toasty while your toes stay chilly, plus it can really dry out the air. If that’s not your vibe, don't hesitate to ask for an extra blanket, keep the room humidified, and be sure to pack some cozy socks for sleeping!
Does Chongqing's Fog Spoil the View?
It depends on what you’re looking for. Chongqing averages about 100 foggy days a year, primarily from November through February, and the fog can be thick enough to obscure the river and skyline from the hillside viewpoints.
Here are three things to keep in mind. First, the fog is usually thickest in the morning and tends to lift or thin out by the afternoon, so keeping your daily schedule flexible is a smart move. Second, the city’s iconic sights—like Hongya Cave, the glowing riverfront, and that famous monorail weaving right through a building—actually look magical in the mist, especially since they’re all beautifully illuminated. Third, if your heart is set on crystal-clear panoramic views, plan your visit for autumn; the summer haze will have faded, and the heavy fog won't have rolled in just yet.
Your Essential Chongqing Packing List
Two items are more essential here than in most other Chinese cities: shoes with serious grip, because the city is a maze of slopes and staircases that turn slippery in the rain, and a folding umbrella, which is a must-have in every season except, perhaps, the height of summer. Everything else just depends on the time of year.
Season | Clothing | Don't forget |
|---|---|---|
Springtime (March–May) | Pack some light layers, a thin waterproof jacket, and a pair of long trousers | Umbrella, grippy shoes for slippery steps, and some light sunscreen |
Summer (June–August) | Loose, quick-dry clothing, shorts, and breathable shirts | Sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, umbrella for sudden storms, mosquito repellent, and a trusty water bottle |
Fall (Sep to Nov) | Pack a sweater, a light jacket, and a pair of long trousers | A waterproof layer for November, and a warm layer for those evenings by the river |
Winter (Dec to Feb) | A windproof and water-resistant outer layer, cozy thermal base layers, and warm socks | An umbrella, neck and ankle protection, and slippers or thick socks for those chilly hotel floors |

Exceeded expectations! As a Wyndham brand, the quality is definitely reassuring. The room features a minimalist modern design and was spotlessly clean. The bedding was exceptionally comfortable with a mattress of just the right firmness—after a long day out, coming back to lie down and instantly relax was the best ~~
I have to give a special shoutout to the breakfast! The Chinese and Western buffet selection is extremely rich, complete with Chinese congee, steamed buns, and stir-fried dishes, plus freshly boiled Chongqing noodles where you can add your own toppings. The first-floor café has a very cozy vibe, making it a lovely spot to sit down and rest. The coffee I ordered looked great and tasted fantastic~~~
The location is super convenient, right across from Ziwei Road—perfect for grabbing a drink or browsing small boutiques in the evening. It's not far from Guanyinqiao and close to the subway station. I'll definitely choose to stay here again next time I'm in Chongqing~~~FromAU$ 59

This was a really great value for money experience. The location is super convenient; it's easy to catch a taxi to the airport or any of the attractions quickly. There are also many local and authentic snack restaurants near the hotel. The service and attitude were excellent, and the mint water in the lobby was delicious! Breakfast was also very tasty, and even buying it separately, it was still worth the price.
The only minor drawback was that the air conditioning felt a bit old and the airflow was a little weak, but overall, it was fantastic!FromAU$ 78

Room had a stunning night view, hotel is grand in both scale and splendour - the minute you walk in it smells wonderful and the size of the lobby is impressive. The staff are very friendly and quick to help - they will let you know all details relevant to your stay and any questions you have will be answered quickly.
The rooms are clean and well furnished, we stayed in the deluxe suite which had a fantastic view, and a massive bathroom with shower, bath and washing machine. We also had a kitchen with dishwasher, stove and fridge freezer although we did not use those. The bed was a king size and very comfortable. The air conditioning was very confusing though - even with labels at door we couldn’t figure out how to make it hotter instead of colder and unfortunately the bathroom started to smell at nights and the smells seemed to be coming up the drains, closing the door helped. Othrr than that, the stay was perfect and because of the room we stayed in we got executive benefits which included breakfast, high tea, welcome snacks and access to the executive lounge with complimentary snacks and drinks.FromAU$ 73

This time, to visit Chongqing with my son, choosing the JW Marriott was absolutely the right decision. From the geographic location to the hotel environment and service, everything was top-notch. I want to especially thank all the staff at the Concierge Department. One night, I came back intoxicated, and several colleagues from the concierge department personally escorted me back to my room. This hotel's concierge service is undoubtedly the best I've ever encountered and definitely deserves recognition from the hotel management. Every day, come rain or shine, they are outside, greeting guests with a smile, making everyone feel right at home. It's truly exceptional! Location: Situated inside Chongqing's landmark 'Grand Sail' building, directly above Raffles City and with direct metro access. Within walking distance to Chaotianmen, Hongyadong, Jiefangbei, and the pier. There are three hotels in the 'Sail' building: InterContinental Raffles City, Hotel Indigo, and Ascott. Ascott is wholly owned by CapitaLand, the developer of Raffles City, so its quality is undoubtedly top-notch.
Facilities: Positioned as a serviced apartment, the public areas are compact yet comfortable and practical. The lobby offers complimentary tea and fresh flowers. A significant portion of the public space is dedicated to guests. The gym is well-equipped with at least two treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes, as well as a full set of resistance machines. There's also a yoga room with river views, comparable to a small commercial gym. It provides hot/cold water, sanitizing wipes, towels, and even headphones with sterilized covers. The swimming pool was closed during our two-day stay, so we hope to check it out next time.
Below the hotel is Raffles City's urban garden, leading directly to a river-view platform – a peaceful oasis amidst the bustle.
Room: We were fortunate to be upgraded to a two-bedroom suite, so spacious it was astounding. It features two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a bathtub in the master. It includes a washer and dryer, perfect for families. The kitchen is fully equipped with a built-in microwave, oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, and range hood. A complete set of dishes and cookware is provided. The facilities are excellently maintained; the microwave and oven looked almost unused.
The room offers a pillow menu and abundant storage space.
Due to its unique location, Ascott's rooms offer either unbeatable river views, stunning city views, or like ours, views of both.
Service: Special thanks to Miss Genny at the front desk, who was incredibly patient during our check-in, attentively asked about our needs, and efficiently arranged our room. We arrived early, intending only to store our luggage, but to our surprise, we received our room key immediately. We are very grateful.
All hotel staff were exceptionally proactive, friendly, and helpful – carrying luggage, greeting us upon sight, making us feel right at home. The staff member on the ground floor was also wonderful, assisting with getting in and out of cars/moving luggage and patiently giving directions.

The room's location and overall value for money are great, especially for those staying in Guanyinqiao and Jiefangbei during the National Day holiday – they're truly brave souls. However, there's a big problem: I booked this room much earlier for 680, but by the time National Day arrived, the price had dropped to 480. Unfortunately, it was already past the refund deadline. My overall experience at Chongqing Yaqi Hotel (Jiefangbei Qixinggang Branch) was outstanding. The service was excellent; the front desk staff were friendly and efficient, and they responded promptly to my WeChat messages. They even returned an item I left behind after check-out, which was a thoughtful touch. As for the facilities, my river-view room had floor-to-ceiling windows directly facing the Yangtze River, complete with smart lighting and a scenic bathtub. The rooftop infinity pool offered clean water and a stunning city skyline backdrop – perfect for photos. The laundry room and complimentary parking were also very convenient. While the food wasn't a lavish feast, the authentic Chongqing noodles for breakfast were delicious. Paired with the clay pot dishes and the time-honored pea and minced pork noodles available nearby, it truly captured the vibrant street food culture of Chongqing. This hotel is located right across from Bayi Square and is also close to the subway. Stepping out, you're on Bayi Road Food Street, where you can find all sorts of local specialty snacks. The staff were very warm and attentive. When we arrived, they immediately offered us refreshing lemon and plum juice from the hotel's self-service, which was incredibly crisp and tasty. Housekeeping was prompt; they even helped us with laundry while we were out exploring. Food delivery riders can bring orders directly to your room. Honestly, if it's not too hot, a short walk will get you to a ton of great food options. You can easily walk to Jiefangbei and Hongyadong from here, and to get to Liziba, you can take Line 2. The hotel's location is excellent. It's less than a ten-minute walk to Jiefangbei and the northern station of the Yangtze River Cableway. If you don't mind walking, you can reach Hongyadong, Chaotianmen Pier, Shibati, and the walking trails within half an hour. However, you should think twice about taking a taxi to these places as traffic can be very heavy.
The hotel entrance is quite small, likely due to limited space. As soon as the car arrived, the bellboy promptly helped with the luggage, which was a great touch. Check-in and check-out were both quick, and the service was warm and polite. The room layout was very well-designed; the kids loved the large sofa bed, and the windows were grand. Having two toilets and two bathrooms was very practical. The desk was the most comfortable and convenient I've encountered in a hotel recently. The bedding in the master bedroom was also very comfortable, ensuring a sound sleep. The breakfast tasted good, but the variety was a bit limited.FromAU$ 147

I thoroughly enjoyed staying at this property. Everyone was so nice and kind. The service was top- notch. The amenities were plenty and easy accessible. A few extras that made everything worth it were the full- sized refrigerator, with freezer, the washing machine (for which they provided soap as well), dish washer, stove top, towel drier ( in the washroom) and full sized closet. The view was so beautiful and calming as well. Everything about this room was just so nice and exactly what I needed.
I didn’t realize how perfect the location was in relation to almost everything that I wanted to see. When I figured that out, I just got up every day and walked to everything that I needed or wanted to see. It was extremely close to a lot of restaurants, malls, local shops and smaller attractions. I was less than a 10 -15 minute walk to Raffles City Shopping Center where there is a 5 story mall, Movie theatre, roof top attraction with the swing, SKY WALK and also the river front park with amazing views. Same distance for Hongyadong, the viewing platform, the Qiansemen Bridge- if you wanted to walk across the bridge at night- I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! However, the hotel shut down AC system at night because outdoor temperature is not hot enough, that leading to in room temperature went back to 27 degrees, I got totally sleepless. Understood the hotel tried to save money on electricity, but AC system is the one of basic amenity systems and should not shut down the mostly of the days.

There's an underground garage, and you can also park on the surface, right at the lobby entrance. Front desk staffer Xiao Zhang provided excellent service, promptly helping us with any issues. 👍
Our room had a private hot spring, and we chose a king-size bed room. The overall room size was a bit smaller than I expected, but it had all the amenities. I personally felt the bedding was a bit damp, and the room was stuffy when we first entered. The air conditioning worked well, though it was quite loud, as it's a bit old. The room also came stocked with potato chips, instant coffee, tea bags, soda, and mineral water, and they thoughtfully provided mosquito repellent. Jinfo Mountain Resort Chongqing|78.16km from downtown
Every year, I make sure to visit Jinfo Mountain, and each time I stay at Tianxing Liangjiang. Previously, I mostly stayed in their family rooms, but this time, after the renovation, I opted for a deluxe standard room. Let's start with the positives: it offers great value for money. Post-renovation, the rooms feel more modern and incorporate some smart features. The twin beds are large enough, making it ideal for families with two children. Right outside, there's a shallow stream, which is incredibly convenient for kids to play in the water and then easily come back to the room to change and shower. Dining options are also plentiful, and it's very close to the West Slope cable car.
Now for the downsides, which are new issues that have emerged since the renovation. One thing is absolutely unbearable: did the designers ever stay in a hotel with their family? The motion sensor light at the entrance turns on every time someone walks by. At night, whether an adult or child needs to use the restroom, it inevitably lights up. This type of sensor light is only suitable for someone staying alone, but this is a holiday resort area where most visitors are families. It seriously disrupts sleep. Another issue is the shower/toilet partition being too small. While it makes the space appear larger, it's extremely awkward for family travel like ours. The shower and toilet are only separated from the main room by a glass door, so you can't even dare to turn on the lights. The shower stall itself is tiny; you can't hang clothes inside. If you put them outside and open the door, anyone in the room can see right in. It's ridiculous! When getting dressed after a shower, you have to open the glass door just a crack, sneak a hand out like a thief, quickly grab the clothes from the chair, and bring them in to get dressed.
These two points significantly detract from the overall stay experience.FromAU$ 42

Location & Surroundings: The hotel is super close to Paradise Walk—less than a 5-minute walk downstairs. I’d recommend taking a taxi here, as it's a bit of a walk from the light rail station. However, this also means it's sheltered from the main shopping crowds, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of the bustling area.
Facilities: The facilities are better maintained than most hotels built around the same time. That said, typical of international chain hotels from that era, the TV only has digital channels; you'll need a cable to cast your own content. The bedding was exceptionally comfortable, and I slept really well throughout my stay.
Cleanliness: The bathroom facilities are well-kept and spotless. The water pressure for both the shower and the bathtub was fantastic.

They even had a colleague help dry out the entire new room, which was a pleasant surprise. Thank you!FromAU$ 89

This hotel was a great choice for bringing my child to Chongqing to see their idol! I specifically picked this one right next to Yangtze International, and the location was incredibly convenient. It was just a few steps downstairs to Yangtze International, so my child could go there every day, take photos in front of the building, and was absolutely thrilled. The room was clean and spacious, very quiet and comfortable, and we slept wonderfully at night. There were plenty of dining options and amenities nearby, with convenience stores and snack stalls right downstairs. Transportation was also easy. This trip was mainly about fulfilling my child's dream, and staying here made hitting all the spots super easy. The child had a blast, and it was stress-free for the adults. I'll definitely choose this hotel again next time I'm in Chongqing! 👍FromAU$ 95

Jiefangbei Area/Hong Ya Dong Chongqing|2.85km from downtown
The hotel has an unbeatable location, right next to the Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street on one side and the Yangtze River Tunnel on the other, with plenty of amazing food options all around.
The Westin offers great service, a comfortable ambiance, and nice room facilities. The breakfast has a wide variety and tastes quite good. However, the Executive Lounge afternoon tea is a bit disappointing—the cakes aren't great and there's no freshly squeezed juice.
The observation deck on the 54th floor is quite small, resembling an infinity pool (swimming not allowed), and is mainly used for taking photos. Going up there at night to enjoy the view is pretty nice.FromAU$ 216

When planning this trip to Chongqing, I agonized over choosing a hotel for ages, constantly torn between Regent, TFT, and Niccolo. Regent has always had a great reputation for service, and TFT was quite appealing too, but in the end, I decided I preferred the views at Niccolo, so I booked it. It turned out to be the right choice—I was quite satisfied with the overall experience.
Actually, having stayed at several Niccolo hotels before, my relationship with the brand is a bit of a love-hate one. The Suzhou Niccolo, in particular, was quite a disappointment. The service was fine—the staff were all very nice—but the interior design and materials used really didn't live up to the price tag. The guest room corridors, especially, gave me the impression of a budget hotel; the lighting and overall ambiance were quite oppressive, completely lacking the texture and feel you'd expect from a luxury hotel. The breakfast was also just so-so, leaving no memorable impression.
However, Niccolo Chongqing is a massive step up from Suzhou.
First of all, the views are genuinely fantastic. Chongqing's urban landscape is so unique with its skyscrapers, river views, and multi-layered architecture, which looks stunning from up high. A huge part of why I choose high-rise hotels like this is just to take in the scenery from the room, especially at night. Sitting back and watching the city lights outside is just so relaxing. So in terms of the view, it certainly didn't disappoint.
The service was solid overall; the staff were courteous and pleasant to communicate with. Of course, it wasn't completely flawless—there was a small hiccup during the stay, but the hotel handled it quite professionally, and I was fine with it. The more you stay at hotels, the more you realize that hiccups can happen anywhere. I'm not overly fussed about that; what I care more about is how the hotel handles issues when they arise. At least this time, Niccolo Chongqing gave me a good impression without any brush-offs or perfunctory attitudes.
The breakfast was also better than expected. Niccolo Chongqing offers a semi-buffet. The space isn't huge, and when I first walked in, I thought it looked a bit cramped and worried there wouldn't be much to eat. But I ended up being quite pleased. The selection was richer than I imagined, the food quality was good, and the Eggs Benedict were spot-on in both taste and quality. The freshly squeezed juices were also delicious. Personally, I've always felt that hotel breakfast doesn't need to blindly chase variety. Many hotels have massive breakfast areas piled high with food, but very few items actually taste good. Even though Niccolo Chongqing's space is small, it has all the essentials, and they're well-executed. I really liked that.
One more thing: after staying at so many Niccolos, I'm increasingly convinced that with this brand, you really need to book a suite. I've stayed in standard rooms and N3 rooms before, and honestly, the difference in experience is quite noticeable. Standard rooms aren't bad, but considering the price and the brand's positioning, they always feel like they're missing that certain something. Suites, on the other hand, instantly elevate the comfort level and give you that proper luxury hotel experience.
So my verdict on Niccolo is pretty simple: the service is mostly good, but the hardware really depends heavily on the specific property and room type. The Chongqing branch is one of the better ones I've stayed at; at least this time, the views, the breakfast, and the overall service left me thoroughly satisfied.
If I visit Chongqing again in the future, I'll likely consider Niccolo again, but I'll almost certainly go for a suite. Seriously, having tried the standard rooms, N3, and the suites, I can only say that suites are definitely the way to experience Niccolo properly.FromAU$ 286

At Regent Chongqing, I truly understood the meaning of understated and warm luxury. The Neo-Chinese design blends seamlessly with the culture of the mountain city, creating an elegant and tranquil space. A glance out the window reveals the confluence of the two rivers, and as night falls, the dazzling lights of Hongya Cave stretch across the river surface, offering a panoramic view of the city's brilliant nightscape. What touched me most wasn't just the stunning river view, but the impeccable service—enthusiastic yet never intrusive, thoughtful down to the smallest detail, and uniquely warm without feeling cliché. The space is filled with the lingering fragrance of Frédéric Malle, framed by the breathtaking mountain city view waiting right outside the bathtub. The mini-bar is replenished daily with local specialty snacks and drinks, and daily laundry service comes with a thoughtful greeting. Because of all this, I think I’ve fallen in love with Chongqing, and I've fallen in love with the Regent! Unfortunately, during my two-night stay, the Two Rivers Bar was fully booked for private events both nights. After much consideration, I decided to stay an extra night just to enjoy the evening river breeze at the Two Rivers Bar, accompanied by classic jazz, washing away the fatigue of the entire day. Thanks to the Regent, this trip to the mountain city holds an extra layer of unforgettable, gentle memories.FromAU$ 273

Xiao Yang's service was incredibly thoughtful and attentive. During check-in, he meticulously explained all the scenic spots within the park and even reminded us about the significant temperature difference between day and night on the mountain. The hotel is located right inside Fairy Mountain Forest Park, and your room card grants direct access to the vast grassland. This hotel in Jiefangbei is a true travel gem! Found it on Doubao (haha), and the location is absolutely fantastic. It's within walking distance to Jiefangbei and Bayi Delicious Street, and not far from Hongyadong and Raffles City either.
The room was meticulously cleaned, no strange odors, and the mattress and pillows were very comfortable, ensuring a peaceful night's sleep. The soundproofing was excellent; I could sleep soundly even in the bustling city center. The bathroom had a wet and dry separation, all toiletries were provided, and the hot water supply was strong.
The front desk staff were enthusiastic and efficient with check-in, patiently answering all my questions. Overall, the value for money is great. It's definitely worth staying here when visiting Chongqing, and I'll be back next time!FromAU$ 20

FAQs About Chongqing Weather
-
What is the best time to visit Chongqing?
Late September to November, followed by March to May. Autumn brings the year's clearest skies, comfortable temperatures and lower humidity, with the caveat that the first week of October is the National Day holiday and the city's busiest period. -
How hot does Chongqing get in summer?
Average highs are 33 to 34°C in July and August, but extremes go much higher. Shapingba has recorded 42°C, Beibei 43.6°C, and Wuxi County 44.2°C in August 2025, the highest in its history. Nights frequently stay above 25°C, and humidity makes it feel worse. -
Is Chongqing cold in winter?
Not on paper: January averages 8.1°C with highs around 10°C, and snow in the city is rare. In practice it feels considerably colder because humidity runs at 82 per cent and there is no municipal central heating, so indoor spaces are often barely warmer than outdoors. -
When is the rainy season in Chongqing?
Rain increases from March and peaks in June at around 212 mm, staying high through August. September and October bring the autumn rain pattern typical of western China, which produces drizzle and overcast skies rather than heavy storms. January and February are the driest months. -
Does Chongqing really have 100 foggy days a year?
Yes, roughly, concentrated between November and February. The fog can block views from the hillside lookouts, but the city's illuminated riverside sights work well in mist. Morning fog often thins by the afternoon. -
Is Chongqing worth visiting in the rain?
Yes, and the city is better set up for it than most. Hotpot, teahouses, covered markets and the illuminated riverfront all work in poor weather, and the mist adds to the atmosphere of the riverside districts. What does not work is a day of hiking or a river cruise, so build flexibility into your itinerary. -
What should I pack for Chongqing?
Shoes with grip, because the city is built on hills and staircases that turn slippery in rain, and a folding umbrella, which is useful in every season. In summer add sunscreen and mosquito repellent; in winter add a windproof and water-resistant outer layer and warm socks for unheated hotel floors.
