The Spanish Steps at Piazza di Spagna
#visitrome
Spanish monument in Rome? This monument 135 steps stairway was built by French diplomat Etienne Gueffier with the fund of 20000 scudi, designed by architects Francesco de Sanctid and Alessandro Specchi, linking the Spanish embassy to the Holy See in the Palazzo Monaldeschi at the bottoms. Constructed between 1723 - 1725, this 300 year old steps has a height of 29 meters. Due to many years of corrosion, tear and wear, the steps was renovated a few times, which the recent one was sponsored by Italian luxury brand Bulgari. Down the steps is also the infamous Piazza di Spagna, with the left side Via del Babuino leading to Piazza del Popolo.
The Famous Spanish Steps In Rome
We travel and we visit places of attractions because we want to create memories or perhaps learn about the country's history and culture, and that's what I did when I was in Rome. Rome is such a beautiful place with so much to learn about its ancient history and culture.
One of the place or attractions that I went was the Spanish steps. Though there's nothing Spanish about it, the Spanish steps is one of the most busy and visited attraction in Rome. It was crowded when I was there and the steps are not difficult to climb all the way up. Once at the top, you have the most pretty views of the city of Rome. There's about hundred plus steps to the top. The Spanish steps is a landmark that you should visit and make sure to learn something about it's history.

One of Rome's Best Panoramic Views
The Spanish Steps offer one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Rome. Climb the 138 steps to reach the top and be rewarded with a breathtaking vista of the Eternal City. Admire the beautiful Baroque fountain, the iconic Trinita dei Monti Church, and the sprawling city below. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as you sit and take in the view. As the sun sets, the orange-hued sky paints a stunning backdrop for this unforgettable experience.

THE FAMOUS SPANISH STEPS
The steps that connect Rome's Piazza di Spagna with the French monastic church Trinita dei Monti are known as the "Spanish steps," and they were constructed between 1723 and 1726 in the Rococo architectural style (built between 1502–1587). There are three distinct terraces and 135 stairs, alluding to the Holy Trinity (the Trinità). Even though it is shared with crowds of other tourists, the view from the top of the stairs near the Egyptian obelisk is stunning. The name can be a little misleading because the French actually ordered the steps' construction (Louis XII). The Spanish Steps got their name because in the 17th century, the Spanish embassy was situated at the bottom of the stairs, in the area known as "Piazza di Spagna." Spanish steps is consequently not the official name but Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti.
The "Fontana della Barcaccia" fountain, designed by Pietro Bernini, the renowned Gian Lorenzo Bernini's father, is also located on this Piazza di Spagna. This phrase is translated as "Fountain of the Ugly Boat." This is not a reference to the sculpture's appearance; rather, it refers to the legend that the small, unsightly boat was left here after the Tiber flooded in 1598. Bernini was inspired by that.#tripblazers #romeitaly #italytravel #europeanarchitecture
I dare you to sit on the Spanish Steps
Spanish Steps is a staircase that connects the Piazza di Spagna to Trinità dei Monti (16th-century church). Even though there is "Spanish" in its name, the Steps is actually funded by French money. It was designed by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi and has featured prominently in many movies.
Before the new municipal rules introduced in 2019, this was where people were usually sitting and hanging out. It was also common to see Romans having lunch here. Nowadays, if you were caught sitting on the steps, police officers stationed there would usually blow their whistle and wave their hands to signal that sitting is off-limits. Sometimes, they would tolerate if you just want to take a quick photo sitting down. But better be quick!

Spanish Steps and Orange Trees Garden
#bucketlistreboot
The Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) are another popular attraction amongst tourists. There are 135 steps connecting the Piazza di Spagna at the bottom with Piazza Trinita dei Monti at the top. The Spanish Steps are typically used as a meeting place, including for many local walking tours. You will see lots of people relaxing or just taking a break in this area.
If you have the time, you can also visit the Orange Trees Garden (Giardino degli Aranci). The park offers an excellent view of Rome and is just a nice place to sit down and relax. This was a real highlight from our trip.

Checkinaway (@checkinawayblog) Spanish Steps @ Piazza di Spagna
I love this photo of Piazza di Spagna taken in Sepia color, a different view of the usual colorful Spanish Steps of Rome.
The steps are beautiful to view and they are also a beautiful panaromic point to get good views over Rome.
Built in Rococo style between year 1723 and 1725 steps that leads this steps to French monastery church. With 135 steps with 3 different terraces.
In the 17th century, the Spanish embassy was located on the square at the stairs's base therefore the name Spanish steps came from.

Essential landmark
We were in Italy in July 2022. We were in Rome for 5 days. We visited this land mark many times as it was on way to many other attractions in Rome. At the bottom of Spanish Steps is beautiful Piazza Di Sapgna. View from top of steps is beautiful. We climbed down these steps rather than climbing up in a hot day. It is a must visit place when you are in Rome. Lots of crowds. These steps include so much history so it is a sort of must to experience this place. Quite many steps but made it till the top. Worth going! 😉 #spanishsteps #romeitaly #romevacation #rome #italytravel

Strolling in Rome | Wandering between historical reality
In January 2023, Rome had not many tourists. Walking in the old city, it felt like going back to three years ago.
The Spanish Steps are a popular spot for taking photos, and it's where Hepburn ate ice cream in "Roman Holiday". Below is the broken ship fountain designed by Bernini, and historical relics from different periods can be seen everywhere in the old city. Time leaves no trace, only architecture records the brilliant glory of generation after generation.
My son is more concerned about the water spraying out of the broken boat, while I wonder what he will remember in 10 years. But whatever he remembers, it's his memory, and what I care about is just his smile today...
Not far away is the Spanish embassy, and 100 meters outside the embassy is a McDonald's restaurant that my son will never forget. It's very Italian, with Mario everywhere, a dazzling display of desserts, huge tabletop games, and a friendly guy who loves to play with kids 😂😂 We ended up spending more time here than at any other tourist attraction 😂.
Travel is more like searching for the differences in life, and feeling the subtleties around us is what truly touches the heart...
Rome ✖️ Spain ✖️ Bulgari's special collaboration
In 2015, Bvlgari spent 1.5 million euros to repair the Spanish Steps in Rome. We had no idea before we went there, but we found out after arriving that the steps were fenced off from the square below, and tourists couldn't go up. Fortunately, the fence was transparent, which allowed many visitors from afar to catch a glimpse of the beauty.
Since we can't imitate Hepburn walking down the steps and eating ice cream in Roman Holiday, we can only take tourist photos that feel like sneak shots.
